Opis:
In one of the domestic rooms attached to the North-West Church at Hippos (Sussita), at least three ceramic pithoi were found, all of them in secondary use, possibly for the processing (storing?) of lime. One of them bore an inscription in Greek, scratched into its surface, which turned out to be an acclamation for the circus faction of the Blues. This interesting addition to the corpus of the factions’ inscriptions from Syro-Palestine is also lending the dating to the original period of the pithos’ use, which cannot be later than the Islamic conquest of the region in AD 636/638.

Opis:
Archaeological and geophysical prospection of the site of Khirbat as-Sar (Sara) in Jordan, carried out by a team from the Polish Centre of the Mediterranean Archaeology (PCMA), University of Warsaw, has resulted in a comprehensive plan mapping all visible architectural remains. A Roman-period sacred compound appears to be a central feature of this site. Pottery collected from the surface has given a time range for the settlement from the late Iron Age through the Mamluk period. The electrical resistivity method using a probe array that allowed ground penetration to a maximum depth of approximately 1.50 m revealed meaningful information on the spatial organization of the site. Numerous high-resistance anomalies were interpreted as a reflection of building remains.

Opis:
Polish excavations at the site of Beit Ras (ancient Capitolias) in the governorate of Irbid, northern Jordan, investigated an area in the northern part of the ancient town, to the west of the Roman-age theater. Three seasons of fieldwork were conducted, starting in 2014 with a survey using the electric resistivity method to detect ancient structures. The presence of architectural features was noted, dated by surface finds spanning a period from the 1st–2nd through the 12th–13th centuries AD. In the next two seasons, in 2015 and 2016, excavation of three archaeological trenches led to the discovery of the remains of a winery and a section of the city wall, as well as a sequence of floors. This established a chronology of usage from the Roman to the early medieval period and proved that this part of the town was mostly domestic in character, at least during the Byzantine and early Islamic periods. Evidence of destruction of a nearby church was also found, tentatively attributed to a Sassanian raid in AD 614 or soon after.

The topography of ancient Nea Paphos features two hillocks, Fabrika and Fanari, that would provide a natural setting for buildings of some significance in the city’s life. Recent discoveries at Fabrika have identified its southern part as a sacred area of the Hellenistic and early Roman period. In contrast, Fanari hill remains virtually unexplored while there are reasons to believe that, beside housing another temple, it was the seat of the civil/military power of the Ptolemies. The aim of this paper is to re-examine all topographical and archaeological evidence related to the Fanari site and its role in the life of Nea Paphos.

Opis:
Stress in the workplace, personal resources and professional burnout concern many workers in the contemporary world. These are common problems also among two groups of musicians: teaching musician and non-teaching musicians. The purpose of the study was to establish the dependence between occupational stress and burnout syndrome in these groups. The studied groups consisted of 94 musicians. The Perceived Job Stress Questionnaire, Maslach Burnout Inventory, Generalized Self-Efficacy Scale, The Resiliency Assessment Scale were used in this study. The data obtained revealed significant differentiation in a level of stress in the workplace among teaching musicians and non-teaching musicians. Teaching musicians differs in comparison with non-teaching musicians in general level of stress and four its factors: psychical balance of work, lack of rewards, social contacts and uncertainty at work. The data obtained revealed significant intensity of stress feeling at work in evaluated group. However, there are no significant differences in personal resources. To conclude: higher intensity of occupational stress is connected with the greater intensification of burnout syndrome and lower intensification of sense of personal achievements in investigated group of teaching musicians.

Opis:
The aim of the present study is to investigate the relationship between the shape of the Levantine wine jars discovered at Sha‘ar-Ha Amakim and the petrography of their respective fabrics. The majority of sampled ceramic material originates in well-defined chronological phases of the settlement at the site, spanning the Persian through to the Middle Roman periods. The obtained results clearly demonstrate a connection between the historical period and the raw materials used in jar production. Specifically, the jars of the Phoenician type used in the Persian and Hellenistic periods were made from a fairly homogeneous raw material, the features of which such as the content of the fragments of the coralline alga Amphiroa confirm the previous results of the investigations of jars whose fabric has been considered as Phoenician. On the other hand the bag-shaped jars, especially those of the Hellenistic period, are characterized by the more diversified petrography of their fabrics, suggesting that they were produced by a number of local workshops to supply the needs of local wineries. Finally, the Roman period brings an abrupt change in the production of wine containers, with the introduction of the common use of the fine ferruginous soil rich in quartz silt.

One of the trenches opened by the team of the PCMA during 2015–1026 at the site of Beit Ras (ancient Capitolias) in the governorate of Irbid, northern Jordan, revealed remains of the defensive city wall. Neither the foundation nor the earliest walking level connected with the wall could have been reached; however, the archaeological exploration allowed to identify three upper floors, all of them posterior to the construction of the city wall. The analysis of the ceramics from under the floors allowed to study the repertory of the local, regional and some imported wares in the Roman-period Capitolias and, at the same time, provided an insight to the chronology of the defenses of ancient Capitolias.

Opis:
The field research conducted in Paphos in the framework of a joint project of the Université d’Avignon and the University of Warsaw focuses on the southern part of Fabrika hill with the aim to understand its role in the urban life of ancient Nea Paphos. Two seasons of the fieldwork (2018–2019) yielded evidence for the arrangement and chronology of a temple site of the Hellenistic and early Roman period. A preliminary exploration of underground chambers strongly suggests that they may have been a part of the same sacred area as the temple. Moreover, several burials as well as some walls and floors testify to the use of the site during the Byzantine and Medieval period.

The paper looks into the turbulent history of the ancient town of Akrai/Acrae in a mountainous part of southeastern Sicily, encapsulated in the assemblage of finds from a domestic cistern, which was remodeled and adapted in the course of its use. The cistern is considered as an architectural feature against the background of the ancient town, and the assemblage recovered from it is exmined thoroughly category by category, giving insight into the life of the ancient inhabitants of this island in the Mediterranean.
