Opis:
Larvae of lacewings (Neuroptera) are known to be fierce predators. According to the morphology of fossil forms this seems to have been the case already in the Early Cretaceous. While being predators, lacewing larvae are also food items for other organisms. Here we report two pieces of amber from Myanmar providing instances of such cases. In one amber piece several isolated stylets of lacewing larvae are preserved closely associated together. The most likely interpretation is that a predator preying on lacewing larvae has regurgitated or defecated these non-digestible pieces, yet the identity of the predator remains unclear. The other amber piece preserves a larva resembling modern day larvae of split-footed lacewings (Nymphidae). The larva has projections on its trunk, allowing it to wear a camouflaging cloak. In the head region, a mite (Acari) is attached to the larva; more precisely, the entire anterior body region of the mite is apparently inserted into the lacewing larva. The mite is smaller than the larva. It is known from the modern fauna that stage 1 larvae of Ascalaphidae can be attacked also by rather small predators, such as ants. The mite can therefore well be interpreted as a true predator instead of a parasite, especially considering the unusual mode of attachment. We briefly review interactions of lacewing larvae with other organisms represented in amber from Myanmar and add two new pieces to the puzzle of reconstructing the trophic interactions in the 100-million-year old amber forest.

Ornithosuchidae is one of the most enigmatic clades of Triassic pseudosuchians. The group is composed by three carnivorous species that were excavated from Upper Triassic beds of Scotland and Argentina. We describe the first ornithosuchid from the Upper Triassic sediments of Brazil and explore its phylogenetic affinities and implications for the evolution of the group. Dynamosuchus collisensis gen. et sp. nov. was found as the sister taxon of the Argentinean form Venaticosuchus rusconii. These relationships reject a potential endemic radiation of ornithosuchids from the Ischigualasto-Villa Unión Basin and would better support multiple diversification events. Our findings with ornithosuchids is consistent with the pattern reported for proterochampsid and erpetosuchid archosauriforms from Ischigualasto-Villa Unión and the Paraná basins. In addition, the presence of an ornithosuchid in the Late Triassic of Brazil suggests that ornithosuchids were more widespread than previously thought in the southern hemisphere. The new ornithosuchid further demonstrates a faunistic link between the Argentinean and Brazilian basins during the Carnian. Finally, the discovery of the new species provides the first clue of a putative necrophagous vertebrate from the oldest dinosaur-bearing beds and expands our knowledge regarding the trophic structure of the Late Triassic of Brazil.

We report on electronic transport measurements of the magnetic semiconductor Ga_{1-x}Mn_{x}As, whereby the defect landscape in various metallic thin films (x=6%) was tuned by He-ion irradiation. Changes in the distribution of activation energies, which strongly determine the low-frequency 1/f-type resistance noise characteristics, were observed after irradiation and can be explained by deep-level traps residing in the As sublattice. Various other kinds of crystalline defects such as, for instance, Mn interstitials, which possibly form nanoscale magnetic clusters with a fluctuating spin orientation, also contribute to the 1/f noise and can give rise to random telegraph signals, which were observed in films with x=7%. In addition, we neither find evidence for a magnetic polaron percolation nor any features in the noise near the Curie temperature.

Opis:
In order to advance modern information technologies, progress in both the fabrication of magnetic nanostructures and of complex materials, from which small magnetic entities - like the skyrmions present in MnSi - emerge and in developing measurement techniques are desired. Here the sensor-based stray field detection using tailor-made micro-Hall magnetometers has proven to be a versatile tool for studying the magnetization reversal of individual magnetic nanostructures, domain wall motion in thin films, as well as the local stray field close to macroscopic samples. In this article we demonstrate that the local stray field can be used to accurately map out the B-T phase diagram of MnSi and serve as a guidance for simultaneously-performed electronic transport measurements. The presented study also serves as a proof-of-principle experiment for future combined investigations of electronic transport and magnetization focusing on electrically-contacted magnetic nanostructures.

Opis:
Productivity enhancement is achievable by increasing the dynamics of machines. This can be accomplished by decreasing the moving mass or by increasing the driving forces. One possibility for increasing the drive forces lies in the use of multiple parallel-acting actuators. Because of the mechanical coupling between the drives, undesirable interference of the actuators occurs. This limits the control bandwidth of the feed axis. Feed axes of machine tools are mostly equipped with linear guides fitted with rolling elements. Since they dispose of just one degree of freedom, small errors in their alignment or thermally induced errors cause constraining loads. In this paper compliant mechanisms are used to mechanically decouple the slide from the guide and drive elements. The application of flexible joints in gantry axes with linear motors and ball screws is investigated. The dynamic behaviour of the feed axis components are modelled using the Finite Element Method. By applying the modal reduction technique, the dynamic behaviour is included in an elastic multibody simulation. With the mechanical decoupling of the drive and guide elements it is possible to increase the control bandwidth of the system. Deviations in motion may also be corrected with parallel-driven feed axis by applying compliant mechanisms.

Opis:
In mid-scale and large five axis overhead gantry type milling machines, the vertical z-slide (ram) often constitutes one of the most sensitive and critical components regarding stiffness, structural vibrations and thermal influences. During machining, the z-slide is loaded by (quasi-) static process and drive forces, transient acceleration forces, periodic excitations by the tool engagement, as well as by thermal effects resulting from altering ambient conditions, heated chips, cooling lubricant and power losses in drives, guides and bearings. Deflections, thermal deformations and vibrations of the z-slide lead to geometric machining errors and inacceptable surface location errors at the workpieces. Furthermore, instable cutting conditions and regenerative chatter limit applicable material removal rates and, thus, productivity. In this work, a newly developed hybrid material structure for an exemplary z-slide, involving metal parts and mineral cast, is introduced. Structural optimization methods as well as process simulation techniques were applied in order to derive the final design solution. The integration of active cooling circuits for thermal stabilization is investigated and the use of fibre optical strain sensors is analysed with respect to a state monitoring of the machine tool component.

Opis:
The primary goal of the Antihydrogen Experiment: Gravity, Interferometry, Spectroscopy (AEGIS) collaboration is to measure for the first time precisely the gravitational acceleration of antihydrogen, H̅, a fundamental issue of contemporary physics, using a beam of antiatoms. Indeed, although indirect arguments have been raised against a different acceleration of antimatter with respect to matter, nevertheless some attempts to formulate quantum theories of gravity, or to unify gravity with the other forces, consider the possibility of a non-identical gravitational interaction between matter and antimatter. We plan to generate H̅ through a charge-exchange reaction between excited Ps and antiprotons coming from the Antiproton Decelerator facility at CERN. It offers the advantage to produce sufficiently cold antihydrogen to make feasible a measurement of gravitational acceleration with reasonable uncertainty (of the order of a few percent). Since the cross-section of the above reaction increases with n⁴, n being the principal quantum number of Ps, it is essential to generate Ps in a highly excited (Rydberg) state. This will occur by means of two laser excitations of Ps emitted from a nanoporous silica target: a first UV laser (at 205 nm) will bring Ps from the ground to the n=3 state; a second laser pulse (tunable in the range 1650-1700 nm) will further excite Ps to the Rydberg state.

The paper investigates the effects of degreasing, surface preparation methods in adhesive bonding and con adhesive joint strength. Five types of degreasing agents were used in the study: acetone, extraction naphtha, Ultramyt, Wiko and Loctite 7061. The degreasing operation was performed by three methods: rubbing, spraying and immersion. Strength tests were performed on single-lap adhesive joints of hot-dip galvanized metal sheets made with Loctite 9466 adhesive according to the above variants of surface preparation. The experimental results demonstrate that adhesive joint strength is significantly affected by the applied degreasing agent. Moreover, the method of application of the degreasing agent is crucial, too. The results of strength testing reveal that the most effective degreasing method for hot-dip galvanized metal sheet adhesive joints is spraying using extraction naphtha. Thereby, degreased samples have the highest immediate strength and shear strength. The use of extraction naphtha is also effective in combination with degreasing by rubbing; however, it is not effective when used in combination with immersion, as reflected in the lowest strength results.

The paper investigates the compression strength of samples of regenerative polymer mass RM 101 Resimetal Metal Repair Pasta manufactured by Rendor. The effect of weather conditions on selected mechanical properties of the tested mass is examined. The samples are subjected to seasoning at room temperature, in an environmental chamber, and in a thermal shock chamber. The samples for strength testing are made according to the adopted method. It has been observed that the samples seasoned at room temperature have the lowest strength, while the highest strength is exhibited by the samples subjected to seasoning in an environmental chamber at a temperature of 70°C and humidity of 95%. In addition, the paper compares the strength properties of regenerative polymer masses manufactured by Chester Molecular, Belzona, and Unirep, as well as of the widely used epoxy compound Epidian 57 mixed with the Z-1 curing agent with those of the Rendor mass. The properties of the above masses are obtained from the available literature.

The paper deals with the testing of composite materials based on aluminium and polymer microparticles. The aim of the research was to determine an influence of a content of a microparticle filler on mechanical properties of the polymer particle composite and adhesive bonds (material structural carbon steel S235J0). A preparation of adhesive bonds and a process of testing of the adhesive bonds were in accordance with the standard CSN EN 1465. The adhesive bond strength was increased when adding the aluminium and polymer powder filler. The adhesive bond strength increase was the highest at the adhesive bond with the adhesive in the form of the composite (15 g of the filler : 100 g of the matrix). The adhesive bond strength increase was 14.3% (13.68 ± 0.43 MPa). Adhesive bonds evinced an adhesive type of a fracture surface. By adding the filler in a form of microparticles there was a change of the failure type on adhesive-cohesive and a cohesive type. Fracture surfaces and an adhesive bond cut was examined with SEM (scanning electron microscopy) using a microscope MIRA 3 TESCAN.

Opis:
The e-navigation strategy of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) aims to improve the safety of maritime traffic by increasing cooperation between several maritime stakeholders. The COSINUS (Bolles et al., 2014) project contributes to such a strategy by enabling an automated data exchange (observations, routes and maneuver plans) between ship-side and shore-side navigational systems, developing useful sensor fusion applications upon the new information available from data exchange and introducing new Human Machine Interfaces (HMIs) to support the users of navigation systems. The project shows potential for improvement in maritime traffic safety by ensuring continuous awareness to all participants involved through sensor fusion applications, i.e. by providing all participants (mobile and stationary navigation systems) with a complete view at all times. These applications include detection of critical situations like radar shadowing areas, early and accurate prediction of potential collisions or closest point of approach (CPA) based on the exchanged routes, and improving the accuracy of radars by ensuring high quality data for obstructed or far away routes. The new HMI concepts introduced within the COSINUS project aim at highlighting critical maritime traffic situations. Thus, the users of such navigation systems supported with COSINUS facilities can easily detect such critical situations and react efficiently to avoid collisions, possible crowded areas and inefficient routes.

Recent demand for powering small sensors for wireless health monitoring triggered activities in the field of small size efficient energy harvesting devices. We examine energy harvesting in an aluminium beam with a piezoceramic patch subjected to kinematic harmonic excitation and impacts. Due to a mechanical stopper applied, inducing a hardening effect in the spring characteristic of the beam resonator, we observed a broader frequency range for the fairly large power output. Impact nonlinearities caused sensitivity to initial conditions and appearance of multiple solutions. The occurrence of resonant solution associated with impacts increased efficiency of the energy harvesting process.

Opis:
The lifetime and stability of AlGaN/GaN heterostructure field effect transistors at high power levels can be enhanced by introducing field plates to reduce electric field peaks in the gate-drain region. Simulations of the electric field distribution along the channel using the 2D ATLAS software from Silvaco indicate that above a characteristic drain source voltage three spatially separated electric field peaks appear, one located at the drain-side edge of the gate foot, one at the end of the drain-sided gate field plate, and one at the end of the source shield field plate. The close correlation between lateral electric field and the electroluminescence due to hot electron related intra-band transitions can be very helpful when optimizing the electric field distribution in high power devices. Electroluminescence microscopy images of devices with gate and source shield field plate reveal the peaks located at the locations of enhanced electric field. By studying the voltage dependence of the electroluminescence peaks the influence of the field plates on the electric field distribution in source drain direction can be visualized.
