Opis:
The research study is based on analysis of the risk of burnout syndrome in social service workers. The dimensions of the standardized MBI questionnaire – The Maslach Burnout Inventory – were used to identify the relationship between the risk of burnout and demographic indicators such as age, education, length of service, or faith, as well as to explore the link between supervision, lifestyle and burnout. The level of burn out syndrome is different and depends on many internal and external factors that can occur more often in peope who work with the most vulnerable groups; the biggest recipients of social services in Slovakia are seniors. As the demographic trends change and the population faces ageing, there is pressure on the quality of social services. Family home care of the elderly is replaced by institutional care in Slovakia and it is still the most preferred form of social health care. The Slovak National Council signed a pact declaring the quality standards that have to be followed by social services providers to address needs of the vulnerable groups, solve the social problems linked with health and nursing care and accept their individuality as much as possible. The lack of staff in social care centres, unsustainable funding and changing social policy can cause increased stress on workers in social services.

Aim. The aim of the research was to analyse the burnout rate of these social workers and nurses, as well as to determine the relationship between burnout syndrome and other important factors, including lifestyle, stress, resistance to stress and other selected demographic indicators. Methods. The Maslach Burnout Inventory was used to collect burnout data in 2021 during the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic. The research sample consisted of 623 women aged 35-55 who work in social services facilities for the elderly and nurses working in the geriatrics department at a hospital in the western part of Slovakia. Results. Research has shown that lifestyle has a significant impact on the development of burnout syndrome in connection with the quality of work and personal relationships, which can help eliminate feelings of frustration, exhaustion and personal failure in the workplace. Burnout affects social workers regardless of age and education, but with older age and length of practice in the same facility, the risk of manifestations of burnout increases. Significant differences in burnout rates between social workers and nurses in the individual dimensions of exhaustion, depersonalisation and professional attitudes were confirmed. High levels of exhaustion have even shown an increased risk of alcohol consumption among these workers. Conclusion. The development of chronic stress in health care workers can put them at risk of burnout, which is characterized by emotional exhaustion (EE), depersonalization (DP) in interactions with patients and social clients, and low levels of personal accomplishment (PA) in social work and health care.

Opis:
Development of social services in Slovakia is connected with the big reform of transformation and decentralisation held in 2002, but there are still differences between state and non-public social providers described in this analysis. An overview of the relevant social law shows that, in addition to municipalities and higher territorial units, social services can also be provided by private entities, such as non-profit organisations, civic associations, church organisations. Unlike these “private” public providers, who are authorized to provide social services under the same conditions as public providers, a non-public provider has to pass legal conditions for the provision of social services. The main differences are visible in the way of funding and in the access to public sources of a number of social care users as well as in condition of providing community-based services. Slovakia and other countries in Europe are facing the demographical changes that affect the quality of life of the elderly, economics, and long-term health and social care. It is necessary to develop community-based services in the basis of sustainability due to ageing of the population and the increased number of the vulnerable people requiring social care.

There is no Strategic Plan for tackling and preventing homelessness in Slovakia, which exacerbates the unsystematic process of social services for homeless people. For this reason, we point out the positives and negatives of the whole system. The research focuses on mapping the current situation of homelessness and describes the aid system under the auspices of the non-profit sector. The participants in the research were social and street workers who provide care and counseling for the homeless on an outpatient basis, on a residential basis or directly in the street where they live.

Opis:
Young people are a generation that engages in active public life, so we have explored ways in which young people under 30 are involved in private and public life. Research study from 2020 involved 284 people who became volunteers during high school and university and continue to volunteer and carry out regular activities for different target groups. The sample consisted of 57% of women and 43% of men at age of 18–30. From the analysis of the results, we found out what the current profile of volunteers is, which motives encourage young people under 30 to volunteer work. We also analysed the character profile of volunteers and their active citizenship. The Slovak Republic’s Youth Strategy for 2014–2020 sets out the strategic objectives of youth policy, one of which is volunteering. At present, volunteering is strongly influenced by demographic trends related to population aging and modernization or digitalization.
