The article discusses the Polish translation (2018) of Goliarda Sapienza’s novel L’arte della gioia (The Art of Joy, in Polish Sztuka radości, trans. by Tomasz Kwiecień) in relation to the selected works of Inga Iwasiów and Sylwia Zientek. Anarchism, which provides the ideological background of the Italian book, serves as the basic point of reference for this interpretation. The author points to the issues from Sapienza’s novel which are important from the perspective of anarchism and which can also be found in the Polish texts mentioned in the article. The aim of this analysis is to discuss the context in which The Art of Joy functions in Poland and to suggest the possible lines of interpretation that can be drawn between this novel and contemporary Polish literature.

Opis:
The aim of the paper is to discuss Polish sex positivity movement and its relationship to queer theory. This is done on the basis of a case study, i.e. the analysis of the book Warsztaty intymnosci [The Workshops of Intimacy] by Agnieszka Szezynska. The author of the article presents selected aspects of this publication, focusing on the typical features of sex positivity approach (in so doing, she refers to other Polish and English sources which represent or study this topic). Apart from that, the scholar shows conceptual overlaps between Szezynska’s perspective and queer theory. In conclusion, the author discusses the functioning and possible outcomes of this alliance in the Polish context.

The value of systematic participation in physical recreation is still unappreciated by the majority of society – but certainly it helps to improve health efficiently, slow down the process of aging in our organism and organize free time effectively. Formally – both in long term and in a wide range – physical education at school prepares children, teenagers and adults as well. Therefore, it is worth to analyze the previously mentioned experiences from the process of physical education among the graduates and observe their current participation in physical recreation. The aim of the study is to consider feminist retellings of myths and legends. As an example, Margaret Atwood’s book The Penelopiad is analyzed. The interpretation is situated in a broader context of intertextual practices characteristic of the feminist vision of literature. I present the ideas which Atwood shares with authors engaged in women’s movement. Among these there is Atwood’s understanding of intertextuality (noticeable especially in The Penelopiad). Bibliographical basis of the study comprises books which are fundamental to feminist and gender criticism (e.g. Poetics of Gender, ed. by N. Miller, New York 1986; S. M. Gilbert, S. Gubar The Madwoman in the Attic. The Woman Writer and the Nineteenth- Century Literary Imagination, New Haven and London 1984). What is more, the study refers to the books which allow considering the notion of intertextuality (G. Allen, Intertextuality, London and New York 2010, J. Clayton. E. Rothstein (eds.), Influence and Intertextuality in Literary History, Wisconsin 1991) and connecting the interpretation with the problems crucial to contemporary literary studies (L. Hutcheon L. A Poetics of Postmodernism. History, Theory, Fiction, New York and London 1988, B. Johnson, A World of Difference, Baltimore and London 1989).

W referacie został podjęty temat trzech kluczowych dla twórczości Marii Komornickiej zagadnień: ciała, ducha i płci. Dwa pierwsze tematy ściśle się ze sobą łączą, dlatego początkowe akapity dotyczą ich obu. Na podstawie tych refleksji wysnuto wnioski dotyczące obrazu płci w twórczości autorki. Pojęcie to jest analizowane zarówno w kontekście młodopolskiego dyskursu płci, jak i – z perspektywy nowoczesnych metodologii: krytyki feministycznej oraz studiów genderowych i queerowych. Referat ma na celu zachęcenie odbiorcy reinterpretowania dorobku Komornickiej z punktu widzenia współczesnej świadomości.
This paper concerns three significant concepts in Maria Komornicka’s writings: body, spirit and gender. The first two are closely related to each other, thus initial paragraphs are devoted to them both. On the basis of these reflections, I draw some conclusion about the image of gender created by the poet. The notion of gender is analysed in terms of Young Poland discourse of gender and from the perspective of modern methodologies: feminist criticism as well as gender and queer studies. This paper aims at encouraging the reader to reinterpret M. Komornicka’s output with contemporary awareness.

The aim of this paper is to consider the relationship between the work of S. I. Witkiewicz and mass culture. First, I analyse Witkacy’s photography and paintings. Then, I focus on the connections between his dramas and novels, and cinematography. The idea is to reveal the author’s ambiguous attitude towards mass culture. I refer to Witkacy’s philosophical and aesthetic writings. References to Polish mass culture of the interwar period are also included. The bibliographical basis of the study contains works of such authors as Janusz Degler, Katarzyna Taras and Daniel C. Gerould.

At the end of the year 2012, Food and Chemical Toxicology published a long-term study by Seralini et al., describing the safety evaluation of genetically modified NK603 maize and Roundup herbicide. Contrary to previous, short-term studies, this experiment revealed some negative effects of these substances on the health of experimental animals. GM feeds and Roundup generate revenue worth millions of dollars. This may be the reason why Seralini’s paper has became the subject of much heated criticism, mainly from parties linked to business and agro-biotechnology. After one year of debate, the editors of Food Chem Toxicol. decided to retract the paper, an unprecedented event given that the published article was peer-reviewed and there was no evidence of plagiarism or fraud. Here, we stress the results of Seralini’s study, discuss the methodological hints of that work and cite the commentaries on the whole situation.
