Opis:
Medieval settlement in Kazimierz Dolny, a property of the prince, was originated in the middle of the thirteenth century after disappearance of the nunnery of Kazimierz, located on the hill where the castle was built later. On Góra Wietrzna (Windy Hill), after the transfer of ‘Skowieszyn key’ to monastery in Zwierzyniec, there was a Norbertine settlement. The prince’s settlement Kazimierz had a convenient location near the crossing of Vistula and Grodarz rivers, on a place safe from flooding. On the slope of the hill there could have been a post-monastic church, which presumably was soon converted into the parish church, and at the top was the tower, which guarded the crossing and was the seat of the prince of the settlement.

Opis:
Several pits, the remains of wood tar production using the so-called ‘vessel-less method’, were discovered in the Lublin region. They contained objects related to the early Middle Ages. These discoveries were used as the base for experiments run in 2013 in the experimental archaeology centre at Grodzisko Żmijowiska. The first experiment involved the acquisition of wood tar from birch bark, while the other attempts were aimed at extracting tar from pine stumpwood. The experiments were conducted in a shallow pit that was plastered with clay and had a small depression at its bottom used as a container for the tar, separated from the pit by a clay strainer. The raw material gathered in the pit was covered with a clay dome. When the dome was dry, it was slowly heated up with burning wood to the right temperature which was checked inside the dome with a thermocouple. Both processes were conducted successfully. The results were compared with experiments focused on the production of wood tar using the two-vessel method known in the early Middle Ages. The comparison showed that the vessel-less method is less economical due to the amount of fuel used and almost three times less efficient in terms of the raw material to final product ratio. However, it is very simple technically and allows the effective production of wood tar.

Opis:
Arsenic is a metalloid which occurs naturally in air, as well as in soil and water. Its sources are both natural and antropogenic. Form in which arsenic compounds occur, depends on oxygen levels and involvement in biological processes. For 2500 years arsenic has been used by man. In antiquity, compounds, like realgar or aurypigmentum, were used in treatment of many diseases. Arsenic trioxide, on the other hand, was used as a poison. In 1908 Paul Ehrlich won Nobel Price for introducing arsenic compounds into medicine, especially salwarsan for treatment of lues,. Also in present medicine a variety of diseases (i.e. acute promielocytic leukemia or sleeping sickness) is treated with arsenic compounds. Millions of people are suffering because of chronic exposure to arsenic. There is need for further investigation to better understand molecular mechanisms of arsenic toxicity and action of arsenic-containing medicines, as well as of its role in environment.
