Opis:
Escherichia coli small heat shock proteins, IbpA/B, function as molecular chaperones and protect misfolded proteins against irreversible aggregation. IbpA/B are induced during overproduction of recombinant proteins and bind to inclusion bodies in E. coli cells. We investigated the effect of ΔibpA/B mutation on formation of inclusion bodies and biological activity of enzymes sequestered in the aggregates in E. coli cells. Using three different recombinant proteins: Cro-β-galactosidase, β-lactamase and rat rHtrA1 we demonstrated that deletion of the ibpA/B operon did not affect the level of produced inclusion bodies. However, in aggregates containing IbpA/B a higher enzymatic activity was detected than in the IbpA/B-deficient inclusion bodies. These results confirm that IbpA/B protect misfolded proteins from inactivation in vivo.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic, systemic inflammatory disease which affects approximately 1% of the population worldwide. Recent research on the role of heat shock proteins (Hsps) in RA development indicates that they may have pro- or anti-inflammatory effect, most probably via modulating cytokine secretion. We investigated type Th1 (INFγ, TNFα, IL-2) and type Th2 (IL-10, IL-6, IL-4) cytokine levels in sera of RA patients and healthy controls, using flow cytometric bead array assay, and searched for correlations between the cytokine levels and serum antibodies against bacterial (DnaJ) and human (Hdj1, Hdj2 and Hdj3) Hsp40 proteins, as well as clinical and laboratory parameters. The levels of all cytokines studied were significantly increased in RA patients; the highest increase relative to healthy controls (7-fold) was observed for IL-6 and its levels correlated positively with the antibodies directed to DnaJ and to the C-terminal domain of Hdj2, and with diagnostic parameters (DAS 28, Steinbrocker RTG criteria, ARA/7, ESR, TEN, SW and GH). INFγ levels correlated negatively with DAS 28, ESR, TEN and SW. No correlations were found for TNFα, IL-2 or IL-4. Our results support the hypothesis of Hsp40 involvement in RA as well as indicate that IL-6 serum level is a good marker of the RA activity.

Opis:
The cognitive approach in teaching points out clearly to the necessity of integrating language skills in didactic process. Such skills in everyday situations usually appear together: we read in order to write down certain information, we listen to someone’s utterance in order to repeat it to someone else, we write something for someone else to read it etc. Such attitude in teaching imitates a real character of natural communication that combines different types of skills in one multidimensional entity. Methodological materials say nothing or very little on the necessity of integral teaching of the parts of language system that are connected even closer than language skills. No statement can be produced if we do not know the words that this statement should contain and we do not know the rules that must be followed to put these words together. We also need to be able to spell and write down the words correctly in order to make our statement understandable. The article discusses the idea of integrated teaching of the parts of language system along with highlighting its advantages. It is also going to be proved that due to such approach in teaching a learner has numerous and various contacts with language materials, which according to Craik and Lockhart (1971) enhances the process of remembering learnt material.

this article discusses critical literary texts devoted to walery łoziński. the writer became famous mainly as the author of Zaklęty dwór (Enchanted manor). reception of łoziński’s works has been discussed in three parts: Contemporary on Łoziński, Opinions about Łoziński’s output 1911-33 and Opinions about Łoziński’s output – new ones. in part one both articles written during the writer’s life and those written after his premature death have been referred to. part two makes reference to texts by karol Estreicher senior and wilhelm Bruchnalski, which remind of łoziński figure but the main focus has been on the articles and the book by adam Bar entitled Zapomniany powieściopisarz lwowski (Forgotten novelist from Lvov). in the end of this part there have been references to smaller texts on łoziński. in part three main attention has been paid to texts which appeared after 1945. Smaller articles have been briefly discussed. the most of the attention has been devoted to the researcher who studied walery łoziński’s output thoroughly and deeply, namely to Julian krzyżanowski. in the end tV series based on Enchanted manor directed by antoni krauze has been discussed.

Opis:
The main task of Polish schools, which have been established in all larger emigration clusters, was to preserve the knowledge of the language among children. Its command was perceived as a symbol of one's ethnicity, a sign of belonging to a group, and an expression of acceptance of the system of values, which the group represented and cultivated. Knowledge of the language was also supposed to enable young people to access the products of Polish culture and, by means of that, facilitate communal bonding. This function remained unchanged. What changed, though, is the geopolitical situation affecting the position of the Polish emigrant group. The systemic transition, EU accession, and the possibility to participate in European educational programs make our country look quite different from the emigrants' perspective. This implies that the same function has to be realized in a manner which keeps up with the times. The contemporary ethnic school has to be modern. It has to offer interesting educational programs, which correspond to the reality, but which also enable cultivating the tradition, an aspect so important when living abroad. It should organize the educational process in such a way that the young people participating in it have a feeling that they not only learn things that are important for the community of which they are a part, but also, by learning the language, they gain an additional advantage on the labor market. The text presents a proposal of organizing the didactic process in an ethnic school with consideration for a factor which, so far, has not been acknowledged when assigning students to classes, namely the level of language command. It also proposes a conception of integrated teaching of language skills and the components of the Polish language system based on cultural texts, what can significantly increase the effectiveness of teaching.

Choroby układu oddechowego są istotną przyczyną długotrwałej absencji chorobowej, a nawet częściowej lub całkowitej niezdolności do pracy zawodowej. Artykuł jest pierwszym w Polsce opracowaniem zasad dobrych praktyk w opiece profilaktycznej nad osobami z chorobami układu oddechowego. Omówiono w nim zagadnienia związane z orzekaniem o zdolności do pracy u tych osób oraz przedstawiono kluczowe elementy opieki profilaktycznej nad pracownikiem z obturacyjnymi i śródmiąższowymi chorobami układu oddechowego, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem kontroli czynników ryzyka. Zwrócono również uwagę na możliwe przeciwwskazania do wykonywania pracy w przypadku tych schorzeń oraz zadań lekarza sprawującego opiekę profilaktyczną. Med. Pr. 2013;64(3):427–438
Respiratory diseases are a cause of long-term sickness absence, and even of partial or complete inability to work. This paper presents the first in Poland description of principles of good practice in occupational health service provided for people with respiratory diseases. The issues concerning the certification of the ability to work in this group of patients are discussed. The key-principles of preventive care of workers with obstructive and interstitial lung diseases with particular attention paid to the control of major risk factors are also presented. The importance of possible contraindications for job performance by workers affected by these diseases, as well as the responsibilities of occupational health physicians were highlighted. Objectives: Several studies, mostly based on questionnaire-derived data, have shown an increased risk of allergic diseases, especially asthma, among cleaners. The risk factors and etiological mechanisms are still being investigated. Occupational exposure to various chemical and biological agents may induce specific sensitization and/or irritant effects. The aim of our study was to estimate the prevalence of work-related symptoms suggesting the presence of allergic disease reported by cleaners, and to relate them to the results of commercially available and standardized objective tests used for screening detection of occupational sensitization and chronic respiratory disorders. Material and Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed among 142 Polish workers of cleaning service in their workplaces. A detailed questionnaire, skin prick tests to common allergens and chemicals used by these workers for cleaning purposes (chloramine T, chlorhexidine, formaldehyde, glutaraldehyde, benzalconium chloride), total and specific serum IgE antibodies to disinfectants and rest spirometry were performed in all the subjects. Results: Fifty nine percent of all the subjects declared occurrence of at least 1 symptom suggesting allergic ailment during cleaning activities at work. Skin prick tests and specific serum IgE antibodies to disinfectants were negative in all the subjects. In 8 cases wheezing was detected during auscultation, but only in 5 of them obstructive pattern in rest spirometry was found. Conclusions: Occupational allergic causation of symptoms among cleaners could be less likely than work-related symptoms associated with exacerbations of new-onset or pre-existing respiratory diseases. Therefore, in this group of workers, mainly the non-specific irritant impact of chemicals on airways should be taken into consideration.

Opis:
The article discusses the problem of teaching Polish as a heritage language, outside of Poland and when the number of teaching hours is limited. In such a situation it is worthwhile to integrate subsystems and language skills as well as combining the curricula of a range of subjects. This eclectic approach seems to be effective here. The approach is described not as a set of random actions, but as well¬ thought out and coherent procedures. The article uses the example of Barańczak’s Garden party to present how different techniques can be applied in teaching. It also underlines the necessity of using different media, which makes language education more modern and more attractive.

Opis:
Narzędziem pomiaru najczęściej stosowanym w dydaktyce języka jest test osiągnięć. Za jego pomocą określa się stopień opanowania przez uczących się określonego materiału i/lub wielkość przyrostu ich umiejętności językowych. Błędy popełniane na etapie konstruowania testu osiągnięć w zakresie doboru treści podlegających sprawdzeniu, zadań testowych oraz zastosowanych kryteriów poprawy mogą fałszować rzeczywisty obraz umiejętności zdających, niesłusznie je przeceniając lub dostatecznie ich nie dowartościowując. W niniejszym tekście analizie poddaje się czynniki wpływające na trafność oraz rzetelność testu osiągnięć, które są podstawowymi wyznacznikami jego poprawności.
A language achievement test is the most commonly used evaluation tool in the field of language learning/ teaching. Such tests measure students’ mastery of a particular instructional domain in order to make decisions regarding their advancement and/or competency. A well-constructed test will give both the teacher and the students an appraisal of their respective achievements. Administering tests will lose its importance if the items do not pose a particular challenge to the students and/or if they do not adequately reflect the given body of content. The text presents a thorough analysis of the factors affecting validity and reliability of achievement tests. Validity is the most important quality of test use, which concerns the extent to which meaningful inferences can be drawn from test scores. No test can achieve its intended purpose if its results are unreliable.

The term heritage language has been functioning in the relevant world literature since the late 1990s. It began to be used in Polish publications somewhat later gradually gaining acceptance in the circles of researchers, teachers and users. Its popularity ensures its broad application in various subdisciplines of linguistics – it is used not only by language educationalists, but also psycho-, ethno-, and sociolinguists. This study out lines the specificity of the notion of heritage language with particular focus on its significance in ethnic education and usefulness when differentiating between natural and cognitive bilingualism, and describing linguistic competences of users, which are largely determined by being part of a given generation of the Polish community abroad.

Brak jednoznacznych uregulowań prawnych i jasno wytyczonych w życiu gospodarczym zasad etycznych, a także kryzysy finansowe i dążenie do maksymalizacji zysków bez względu na wszystko, spowodowały, że Stowarzyszenie Księgowych w Polsce wychodząc naprzeciw wszystkim zajmującym się rachunkowością i ich potrzebom, stworzyło i wprowadziło w życie Kodeks Zawodowej Etyki w Rachunkowości. Celem Kodeksu jest wskazanie odpowiedniej postawy wobec napotykanych problemów etycznych. Autor próbuje wskazać, jak ważne są zasady etyki w rachunkowości, ukazać istotę i sens ich stosowania przez księgowych oraz biura rachunkowe. Artykuł opiera się na analizie literatury i Kodeksu Zawodowej Etyki w Rachunkowości, wykorzystano również metodę analizy źródeł.
Lack of clear law regulations and ethical principles clearly set out in an economic life, as well as financial crises and the desire to maximize profits in line with “no matter what” rule caused the Association of Accountants in Poland, in order to address the expectations of everyone involved in accounting and to meet their needs has created and put into effect the This Code of Professional Conduct in Accounting. The purpose of the Code is to identify an appropriate attitude towards the encountered ethical problems. The author attempts to point out the importance of ethical rules in accounting, reveal their essence and meaning of their use by accountants and accounting offices. The article is based on the analysis of literature and the Code of Professional Conduct in Accounting, the method of sources analysis has been applied.
