Opis:
In the present paper, the results of viscosity measurements in dilute solutions of microcrystalline chitosan (MCCh) with poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) of different degrees of hydrolysis are presented. Microcrystalline chitosan is blended with poly(vinyl alcohol) in aqueous 0.1 MCH3COOH/0.2 M NaCl. Viscosity measurements of dilute polymer solution were carried out in an Ubbelohde capillary viscometer. The final result depends on (I) the thermodynamic goodness of the solvent, on (II) the applied extrapolation method used for determination of the interaction parameters, on (III) the assumed miscibility criteria, on (IV) the degree of hydrolysis of PVA, and on (V) the blend composition.

Opis:
Polymer-polymer interactions and miscibility for chitosan (Ch) and partially hydrolysed polyacrylamide (HPAM) have been investigated using dilute solution viscosity. The intrinsic viscosity, [η], and the viscosity interaction parameters, bm, have been determined for the binary (solvent/polymer) and ternary (solvent/polymer A/polymer B) systems. Degree of miscibility of these polymer mixtures was estimated on the basis of two criteria. The final result depends on (i) the applied extrapolation method used for determination of the interaction parameters, (ii) the assumed miscibility criteria, and (iii) the blend composition.

The aim of the article is to describe the present situation regarding immigrants in Norway. Most of the data that I am using withrespect to this matter comes from Internet resources, as most of the statistics are available online only.The moment that can be regarded as crucial for immigrant history in Norwayis the late 60ties of the 20th century. Guest workers from Pakistan came to the country invited by the Norwegian government. In 1975 the so-called ‘innvandringsstop’ (immigration-stop) regulation was introduced to prevent flooding the country with incoming foreigners. The statistics show that no such significant migration was observed again until 2007–2008 when Polish workers began to come to Norway in large groups. Presently, the largest immigrant groups in Norway are Poles, Pakistani, Germans and Iraqi.There are four important reasons for migration: economic, family, political(refugees) and educational. Work and family are definitely the most commonones.The law concerning immigration was established in 1988 and it is called‘Utlendingsforskriften’. Moreover, the Norwegian immigration policy respectsall the laws and regulations in force in all the EU countries and that apply to the members of the United Nations organization. Nowadays, the Norwegian government is working on a new immigration law that is planned to be introduced in 2010.

In the present paper, the results of thermal analysis (DSC and TGA) and atomic force microscopy studies of microcrystalline chitosan (MCCh) with poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) are presented. Microcrystalline chitosan is blended with poly(vinyl alcohol) in acetic acid solution and this solution is cast to prepare the blend film. From thermal curves the thermal transitions: Tg, Tm and characteristic temperatures of decomposition: Tdi, Tmax have been determined and compared. The influence of the degree of PVA hydrolysis on the thermal properties of blend systems has been discussed. The surface properties of the MCCh and PVA films and their blends have been studied by tapping-mode atomic force microscopy (AFM). The changes of topography images were considered by determining the root mean square (RMS) deviation in the image data. The obtained results suggested that in solid MCCh/PVA mixtures the components are poorly miscible.

Over the last three decades, an increasing interest in the preparation of new materials for wound healing has been observed. Collagen is a widely used biomaterial, and especially fish skin collagen is more and more popular among scientists. This study aimed to obtain thin films from native fish skin collagen and collagen cross-linked with tannic acid. Infrared spectroscopy, mechanical test, topographic imaging, and swelling test were used to characterize the features of the mentioned films. Statistical evaluation of the results was conducted with the Q-Dixon test. Infrared spectroscopy analysis showed that in the IR spectra of examined biomaterials, there are slight shifts in band positions after tannic acid cross-linking. The mechanical properties of the cross-linked material were different from those of the native collagen film. The Young’s modulus was higher for cross-linked collagen, whereas the elongation at break was lower than for pure collagen. The swelling of the collagen films increased after cross-linking with tannic acid. Swelling tests indicated that collagen cross-linked with tannic acid absorbs more water than before cross-linking. The properties of collagen films were significantly improved after tannic acid cross-linking. All alterations can be a result of collagen cross-linking by tannic acid, probably by forming hydrogen bonds between collagen and tannic acid.

Opis:
The influence of the type solvent on the structure of chitosan, hyaluronic acid and their blend films was investigated. Aqueous acetic acid, hydrochloric acid, sodium chloride and aqueous acetic acid/NaCl were used as solvents for chitosan, hyaluronic acid and Ch/HA solution blends. Ch, HA and their blend films were prepared by casting technique. The homogeneity and morphology of chitosan blends were ascertained from the tapping-mode atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The changes of topography images are considered by determining the root mean square (RMS, Rq) deviation in the image data. The surface roughness of chitosan, hyaluronic acid and Ch/HA blended films was altered by mixing. The structure of chitosan blends with hyaluronic acid depends on the blend composition and on the solvent used for preparing the blend.

Opis:
Surface properties of composites containing chitosan (Ch), poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) with hydroxyapatite (HAP) were investigated by contact angle measurements and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Thin films of Ch/HAP and Ch/PVA/HAP composites have been formed by casting methods from acetic acid solutions. Measurements of the contact angle for diiodomethane (D), and glycerol (G) on the surface of chitosan films, Ch/HAP and chitosan/PVA/HAP films were made and surface free energy was calculated. It was found that chitosan/HAP or Ch/PVA/HAP blend surface is enriched in high surface energy component i.e. chitosan. The study of composites by AFM showed a completely different morphology when compared with unmodified components. The roughness of composites increase after the addition of hydroxyapatite. This may indicates a strong interaction between the polymeric components and inorganic additive.

The surface properties of chitosan acetate (ChA), polyacrylamide (PAM) and ChA/PAM mixtures have been investigated by the tapping-mode atomic force microscopy (AFM) and monitored by contact angle measurements. Chitosan is blended with polyacrylamide in acetic acid solution and this solution is cast to prepare the mixture film. Measurements of the contact angle for two different liquids (diiodomethane and glycerol) on the surface of chitosan acetate. The surface free energy (γs) as well as dispersive (gsd) and polar (gsp) components were calculated from contact angle values by Owens-Wendt methods using an appropriate computer program. The values of polar and dispersive components of surface free energy show that PAM films are more polar than chitosan acetate films. In the case of ChA/PAM mixtures, the values of surface free energy and polar component are reduced significantly compared with pure polymers. This behavior indicates rather hydrophobic character of this surface. The changes of topography images were considered by determining the root mean square (RMS) deviation in the image data. The study of blends by AFM showed a completely different morphology when compared with pure components. The roughness of blends increases with the increase of ChA content. This may indicates a strong interaction between the polymeric components.

Cerebral creatine deficiency syndrome is a collective term including different types of disease, all characterised by abnormal creatine level in central nervous system. One of the types, creatine transporter deficiency, is a common cause of X-linked intellectual disability. Typically, it is fully expressed in male patients, however females can also present some symptoms, such as mild intellectual disability, learning difficulties and behavioural problems. The patient presented in this case report is a 4-year-old girl, diagnosed by genetic testing with creatine transporter deficiency showing a novel mutation in SCL6A8 gene, and by proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy in which she presented a typical abnormality in creatine level in central nervous system. The patient presented speech and motor delay, with mild intellectual disability, behavioural problems and seizures well-controlled by valproic acid. The prognosis and therapeutic plan in a female patient with CRTR is a big clinical challenge, as there is few data about this mutation being fully expressed in women. The novel therapy methods may be a promising change in further development and symptoms control in patients with CRTR of both sexes.
Zespół mózgowego deficytu kreatyny jest zbiorczym terminem dla określenia różnych podtypów choroby, charakteryzującej się nieprawidłowym poziomem kreatyny w ośrodkowym układzie nerwowym. Jeden z nich, deficyt transportera kreatyny związany z mutacją w genie SCL6A8, jest częstą przyczyną niepełnosprawności intelektualnej związanej z chromosomem X. Typowo mutacja ta ulega pełnej ekspresji u pacjentów płci męskiej, jednakże kobiety również mogą prezentować niektóre z objawów, takie jak niepełnosprawność intelektualna w stopniu lekkim, problemy z uczeniem się i zaburzenia zachowania. Pacjent przedstawiony w poniższym opisie przypadku to 4-letnia dziewczynka ze zdiagnozowanym deficytem transportera kreatyny. U dziewczynki przeprowadzono diagnostykę genetyczną, w której zaobserwowano nieopisaną dotychczas w literaturze mutację w genie SCL6A8, oraz wykonano spektroskopię rezonansu magnetycznego, która wykazała typowy, nieprawidłowy poziom kreatyny w centralnym ukladzie nerwowym. Pacjentka prezentowała opóźnienie rozwoju mowy oraz rozwoju ruchowego, łagodną niepełnosprawność intelektualną, zaburzenia zachowania oraz napady padaczkowe dobrze kontrolowane kwasem walproinowym. Rokowanie i stworzenie planu diagnostycznego u pacjentki z deficytem transportera kreatyny stanowi duże wyzwanie kliniczne z uwagi na niewielką ilość danych literaturowych dotyczących pełnej ekspresji tej mutacji u kobiet. Nowe metody terapeutyczne mogą przynieść obiecującą zmianę dotyczącą prognozy dalszego rozwoju i kontroli napadów u osób z deficytem transportera kreatyny obojga płci.

A critical situation that parents of children with disabilities have to deal with often surpasses their adaptive and financial abilities, which is significant for their well-being. The family often fights for keeping the balance, but can often do that in a way that blocks the development of the whole system or individual development of people that belong to it. The aim of research presented in this report is an analysis of functioning of balanced and unbalanced family systems with disabled children. The research included the perception and life situation of mothers, who out of all family members are the most prone to experiencing raised stress levels and exhaustion as the ones taking direct care of a disabled child. The participants of the study were mothers (n = 70, age: M = 41,5; SD = 8), children and teenagers with disability. The method used in the study was interview with the use of custom survey and questionnaire methods: Family Rating Scales (Margasiński, 2013) – Polish adaptation of Olson’s FACES IV scale and Endler and Parker’s Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations (in Polish adaptation CISS; Strelau et al., 2005). The analyses also included the specifics of each child’s disability (level of disability, level of the child’s independence, requirements related to rehabilitation treatments). The results of own research suggest that mothers from balanced families in comparison to women from unbalanced families rate their systems as more coherent and flexible, more often use a task oriented stress coping strategy, have higher income and are more happy with their financial and living conditions. However, the profile of a “healthy” family is closer to a coherent-rigid one that to a fully balanced system type.
