In this paper, an improved effective index method (EIM) for designing planar multimode waveguides on the silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform is presented. The proposed method predicts the evolution of the fields more accurately than the conventional effective index method. This improved method is particularly suited to the design of multimode interference (MMI) couplers.

This paper would like to propose a novel microring resonator based on 4 ×4 multimode interference (MMI) couplers. The device acts as two separate microring resonators just in one structure. The transfer matrix method and the three dimensional beam propagation method (3D-BPM) are used to verify the working principle of the device. The device is then designed on silicon on insulator (SOI) technology. This device may be a very promising building block for optical switches, filters, add-drop multiplexers, delay lines and modulators.

Clarifying the genetic background of the drought-tolerance trait is a crucial task that may help to improve plant performance under stress by a genetic engineering approach. dehydration-responsive element-binding protein (dREB) is a transcription factor family which modulates many stress-responsive genes. In this study, we isolated a DrEB homolog gene named ZmDrEBtv from Zea mays var. Tevang-1. Using bioinformatic tools, a number of Indels and SNPs in ZmDrEBtv sequence different from the reference accession were identified. In addition, based on deduced protein sequence similarity, ZmdREBtv was assigned to transcription factor dREB2 class as featured by a conserved dNa binding domain – aP2. The ZmDrEBtv construct under thecontrol of the rd29a promoter was transformed into a drought-sensitive maize plant, K7 line. The transgenic plants were assessed with reference to molecular and phenotypic characteristics related to the drought-tolenrance trait. The results proved that the maize plants carrying ZmDrEBtv gene showed enhanced tolerance and better performance to the water-deficit environment at different stages, compared to the wild-type plants.

In order to effectively retrieve a large database of images, a method of creating an image retrieval system CBIR (content-based image retrieval) is applied based on a binary index which aims to describe features of an image object of interest. This index is called the binary signature and builds input data for the problem of matching similar images. To extract the object of interest, we propose an image segmentation method on the basis of low-level visual features including the color and texture of the image. These features are extracted at each block of the image by the discrete wavelet frame transform and the appropriate color space. On the basis of a segmented image, we create a binary signature to describe the location, color and shape of the objects of interest. In order to match similar images, we provide a similarity measure between the images based on binary signatures. Then, we present a CBIR model which combines a signature graph and a self-organizing map to cluster and store similar images. To illustrate the proposed method, experiments on image databases are reported, including COREL, Wang and MSRDI.

Software cost estimation is a critical activity in the development life cycle for controlling risks and planning project schedules. Accurate estimation of the cost before the start-up of a project is essential for both the developers and the customers. Therefore, many models were proposed to address this issue, in which COCOMO II has been being widely employed in actual software projects. Good estimation models, such as COCOMO II, can avoid insufficient resources being allocated to a project. However, parameters for estimation formula in this model have not been optimized yet, and so the estimated results are not close to the actual results. In this paper, a novel technique to optimize the coefficients for COCOMO II model by using teaching-learning-based optimization (TLBO) algorithm is proposed. The performance of the model after optimizing parameters was tested on NASA software project dataset. The obtained results indicated that the improvement of parameters provided a better estimation capabilities compared to the original COCOMO II model.

Shear stress is a key parameter that plays an important role in sediment transport mechanisms; therefore, understanding shear stress distribution in rivers, and especially in river bends, is necessary to predict erosion, deposition mechanisms and lateral channel migration. The aim of this study is to analyze the shear stress distribution near a river bed at 90-degree channel bend using a depth-average method based on experimental measurement data. Bed shear stress distribution is calculated using the depth-averaged method based on velocity components data has been collected from a 3D-ADV device (three-dimensional acoustic doppler velocity) at different locations of a meandering channel. Laboratory experiments have been made at the hydraulic laboratory of the RCRFIDF (Research Center for River Flow Impingement and Debris Flow), Gangneung-Wonju National University, South Korea to provide data for simulating the incipient motion of the riverbed materials and then predicting the river morphological changes in the curved rivers. The calculated results show that the maximum value of shear stress distribution near the riverbed in the different cross sections of the surveyed channel occurs in a 70-degree cross section and occurs near the outer bank. From the beginning of a 40-degree curved channel section, the maximum value of the shear stress occurs near the outer bank at the end of the channel.

Currently, agriculture has shifted to green production, in which the recycling of post-production by-products is a key issue. In the present work, by-products such as pomelos were studied to promote consumption and enhance the value of pomelo. From pomelo material, essential oils extracted from pomelo peels, pectin, and drying pomelo products have been diversifi ed. In the extraction process of essential oils, the hydrodistillation method was applied in conjunction with the response surface method to obtain the optimal conditions of infl uence factors. These essential oils were quantifi ed as well as determined for components by GC-MS. The pectin recognition process was done by immersion method in HCl acid (pH 2) and the drying process was made with a heat pump dryer under the effects of drying temperature, drying time and wind rate. The results of the essential oil products reached the highest (0.88 ±0.006 g) at the material size of 3 mm, the distillation time of 27 min, and the ratio of raw materials/solvents of 1/12 g/mL. The main components found in pomelo peeling essential oils included limonene (71.768%), γ-terponene (12,847%), α-Phellandrene (2.979%), β-myrcene (2.668%), 1R-α-pinene (2,656%), and β-pinene (1,191%). The pectin content was the highest under the temperature of 90 oC, extraction time of 60 min and ratio/solvent ratio of 1:32 g/mL. Under these extraction conditions, 48% of concentrated pectin content was obtained. Surveying conditions for drying white pomelo peels are capable of reversing: refunded drying pomelos are drying heat pumps in the following conditions: 50 oC drying temperature, the drying time of 90 min, and wind rate of 12 m/s. Product with hardness 309.862 N.

Purified and crude proteases have been broadly applied to obtain hydrolysates from soy protein isolate (SPI) with the improved functional and biological properties. However, the use of fruit juices containing native proteases to produce SPI hydrolysates with better bioactivities receives less attention. The present study attempted to investigate the ability of papaya (Carica papaya) and cantaloupe (Cucumis melo) juices in the hydrolysis of SPI and assess the antioxidant, anti-tyrosinase, and wound-healing activities of obtained hydrolysates. Our analysis showed that SPI was hydrolysed by papaya juice, at the juice to substrate ratio of 2.5:2 (v/w), with a degree of hydrolysis (DH) of approximately 11% after 4 h of treatment at 55ºC. A higher DH (about 26%) was obtained by the hydrolysis with cantaloupe juice at the same juice to substrate ratio and treatment conditions. Papain used at the enzyme to substrate ratio of 0.625:2 (w/w) broke down SPI in a similar DH as papaya juice at the juice to substrate ratio of 2.5:2 (v/w). The ABTS•+-scavenging, OH-scavenging and tyrosinase inhibitory capacities of SPI were lower than those of hydrolysates obtained by the treatment with papaya juice (IC50 of 2.39, 7.17, and 32.07 μg/mL, respectively) and cantaloupe juice (IC50 of 2.46, 6.93, and 30.49 μg/mL, respectively). An enhancement in ABTS•+-scavenging, OH-scavenging and anti-tyrosinase activities was also observed in the hydrolysate obtained by papain (IC50 of 2.75, 17.85, and 117.80 μg/mL, respectively) compared to SPI. However, the increased level of the OH-scavenging capacity of the hydrolysate obtained by papain was lower than that of the fruit juice-treated samples. Remarkably, the hydrolysates prepared from the hydrolysis with fruit juices accelerated the wound closure in human fibroblasts by estimately 1.5 times after 24 h of treatment while this property was not observed in the hydrolysate by papain. Our study data suggest the potential of SPI hydrolysates obtained by papaya and cantaloupe juices in the preparation of healthy food products.

Cordyceps militaris, a precious medical mushroom, has attracted wide attention in industrial fields. Currently, the degeneration phenomenon of C. militaris commercial strains is amongst the major challenges for cultivation at the industrial scale. The screening for superior strains with high yield and medicinal value is considered a realistic approach to overcome degeneration problems. In the present study, the mycelial growth, primordia formation, yield performance, and cordycepin content of five strains (DT1, DT2, DT3, DT4, and DT5) under artificial cultivation conditions were investigated. All strains showed mycelial growth on SDAY and liquid medium. The strains were successfully cultivated in brown rice medium and required 18 (strain DT3) to 25 days (strain DT5) to form primordia. Additionally, morphological characteristics of fruiting bodies varied among the strains. Strains DT4 and DT3 exhibited the highest fruiting body length with 74.23 ± 5.13 mm and 72.63 ± 2.62 mm, respectively whereas the highest diameter was recorded for strains DT1 (4.05 ± 0.18 mm) and DT2 (3.63 ± 0.12 mm). Of note, among the investigated strains, strain DT3 exhibited the highest biological efficiency (8.95 ± 0.07%) and cordycepin content (1.68 mg/g). Therefore, strain DT3 could be selected as a potential strain for commercial cultivation.

Isolated teeth from vertebrate microfossil localities often provide unique information on the biodiversity of ancient ecosystems that might otherwise remain unrecognized. Microfossil sampling is a particularly valuable tool for documenting taxa that are poorly represented in macrofossil surveys due to small body size, fragile skeletal structure, or relatively low ecosystem abundance. Because biodiversity patterns in the late Maastrichtian of North American are the primary data for a broad array of studies regarding non-avian dinosaur extinction in the terminal Cretaceous, intensive sampling on multiple scales is critical to understanding the nature of this event. We address theropod biodiversity in the Maastrichtian by examining teeth collected from the Hell Creek Formation locality that yielded FMNH PR 2081 (the Tyrannosaurus rex specimen “Sue”). Eight morphotypes (three previously undocumented) are identified in the sample, representing Tyrannosauridae, Dromaeosauridae, Troodontidae, and Avialae. Noticeably absent are teeth attributed to the morphotypes Richardoestesia and Paronychodon. Morphometric comparison to dromaeosaurid teeth from multiple Hell Creek and Lance formations microsites reveals two unique dromaeosaurid morphotypes bearing finer distal denticles than present on teeth of similar size, and also differences in crown shape in at least one of these. These findings suggest more dromaeosaurid taxa, and a higher Maastrichtian biodiversity, than previously appreciated.

Background. During the COVID-19 pandemic, a high prevalence of mental health distress has been reported among people who have recovered from the disease. Objectives. To assess the prevalence of depression, anxiety, and stress as well as identify predictors among recovered COVID-19 patients after more than six months of being discharged in Dong Thap Province, Vietnam. Material and methods. The cross-sectional study was conducted among 549 eligible participants recruited by stratified sampling. Data was collected using the depression, anxiety and stress scale – 21 items had Content Validity Index = 0.9, and Cronbach’s alpha for depression, anxiety and stress sub-scales were 0.95, 0.81, and 0.86, respectively. Descriptive statistics were used to measure the prevalence levels and distribution of characteristics of the participant, while factors influencing depression, anxiety, and stress were predicted using binary logistic regression. Results. The overall prevalence of depression, anxiety, and stress were 24.8% (95% CI: 21.2-28.6), 41.5% (95% CI: 37.4- 45.8), and 25.3% (95% CI: 21.7-29.2), respectively. The predictors of depression were living in urban area (OR = 1.97; 95% CI: 1.27-3.08), holding a bachelor’s degree (OR:3.51; 95% CI: 1.13-10.8), having a high monthly income (OR: 2.57; 95% CI: 1.03-6.38), diabetes (OR: 2.21; 95% CI: 1.04-4.68), heart disease (OR: 3.83; 95% CI: 1.79-8.17), respiratory disease (OR: 3.49; 95% CI: 1.24-9.84), and diarrhea (OR: 4.07; 95% CI: 1.06-15.6). Living in the urban area (OR: 1.57; 95% CI: 1.07-2.29), having sleep disturbance (OR: 2.32; 95% CI: 1.56-3.46), and fatigue (OR: 1.57; 95% CI: 1.03-2.39) were predictors for anxiety. Having respiratory disease (OR: 3.75; 95% CI: 1.47-9.60) or diarrhea (OR: 4.34; 95% CI: 1.18-15.9) were predictors of stress. Conclusion. People who have recovered from COVID-19 should be assessed for symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress. Primary healthcare providers should develop interventions to support their recovery.

This paper presents the development of a grammar and a syntactic parser for the Vietnamese language. We first discuss the construction of a lexicalized tree-adjoining grammar using an automatic extraction approach. We then present the construction and evaluation of a deep syntactic parser based on the extracted grammar. This is a complete system that produces syntactic structures for Vietnamese sentences. A dependency annotation scheme for Vietnamese and an algorithm for extracting dependency structures from derivation trees are also proposed. This is the first Vietnamese parsing system capable of producing both constituency and dependency analyses. It offers encouraging performance: accuracy of 69.33% and 73.21% for constituency and dependency analysis, respectively.

A stem-group brachiopod, Oymurania gravestocki Ushatinskaya gen. et sp. nov. is described herein from the middle Atdabanian-lower Botoman Stages (-Cambrian Stage 3) of the Siberian Platform. The fossils were extracted from limestone beds of the Emyaksin, Perekhod, and Pestrotsvet formations as assemblages of disarticulated orthoconic to cyrtoconic porous shells in apatite preservation. The originally organophosphatic shells of Oymurania are externally similar to mitral sclerites (ventral valves) of the stem-group brachiopod Micrina, although no sellate-like sclerites, nor differentiated subapical area with apophyses were recognised in our material. The range of Oymurania shells with sub-central to posteromarginal apex is similar to that of ventral valves ofMickwitzia. Oymurania is also characterised by the system of radial and orthogonal canals open in pairs or triplets in small depressions or indentations of growth lamellae in the outer shell surface. The orthogonal (Micrina-Setatella type) and radial (horizontal setigerous tubes) canals are widespread among the early Cambrian stem-group brachiopods, such as Micrina, Mickwitzia, and Setatella. In addition to these canals, Oymurania exhibits a well-developed acrotretoid columnar microstructure, also known from Setatella. A broad subapical platform in cyrtoconic shells (presumably ventral valves) of Oymurania is interpreted homologous to the deltoid area in mitrals of Micrina and pseudointerarea/interarea in ventral valves of Setatella/paterinid brachiopods. Except with probable cell imprints and openings of orthogonal canals, no morphological differentiation was, however, reflected by the shell interior of Oymurania gravestocki. Being closely related to tannuolinids and mickwitziids, Oymurania complements the picture of diversification of the early Cambrian stem-group brachiopods that occurred in parallel with radiation of paterinids and other crow-group brachiopods on the Siberian Platform and worldwide.

The spinel single phase is detected from X-ray diffraction. Luminescence properties of Cr$\text{}^{3+}$ in ZnAl$\text{}_{2}$O$\text{}_{4}$ were studied by low temperature luminescence and decay measurements. Four luminescence lines at 14570, 14520, 14460, and 14330 cm$\text{}^{-1}$ were found to originate from structure distortion and the line at 14175 cm$\text{}^{-1}$ - from chromium pairs. The broad emission band at about 13540 cm$\text{}^{-1}$ is considered to arise from a new Cr$\text{}^{3+}$ center in ZnCr$\text{}_{2}$O$\text{}_{4}$.

Opis:
An uncommon excitonic instability takes place in some exotic semiconducting compounds. Indeed, the equilibrium neutral-to-ionic (N-I) phase transition, as well as the non-equilibrium photo-induced phase transformation, observed in some organic charge-transfer complexes, originate from intra- and inter-chain cooperative effects between structurally relaxed charge-transfer excitations. This electronic-structural phase transition manifests itself by a change of the degree of charge-transfer and a dimerization distortion with the formation of donor-acceptor pairs along the stacking axis in the I phase. Thermal charge-transfer excitations associated with the formation of I strings along N chains are at the heart of the mechanism of this phase transition. These relaxed electronic excitations, which are an intrinsic feature of low-dimensional systems with strong electron-phonon coupling, can be described in terms of self-trapping and self-multiplication of charge-transfer excitons. Precise structural studies on the prototype compound, tetrathiafulvalene-p-chloranil allow to highlight the respective role taken by the ionicity and the dimerization. Symmetry and thermodynamics analysis of the N-I transition, based on recent determination of the pressure-temperature phase diagram, make possible to present a consistent picture of this phase transition. Supported by theoretical considerations taking into account the interplay between quantum and thermal effects, the experimental observations show that the N-I transition results from the condensation and the ordering (crystallization) of charge-transfer excitations, following a phase diagram analogous to the solid-liquid-gas one.

A new, unusual rhynchonellide brachiopod Jafarirhynchus alatus assigned to the newly established family Jafarirhynchidae is described from the Silurian (Telychian) of the Boghu Mountains in east-central Iran. It forms a low diversity association with the spiriferide Striispirifer? ocissimus, which exhibits well preserved calcified brachial supports. A strophic shell, well-developed ventral interarea and liberosessile mode of life make this taxon unique among Palaeozoic rhynchonellide brachiopods. In spite of a superficial similarity to spiriferides and the atrypide family Davidsonioidea, Jafarirhynchus retains the typical rhynchotrematoid cardinalia with a septalium supported by the median septum, a septiform cardinal process and long, raduliform crura. It is considered as an offshoot of the local lineage, which includes two successive species of Stegocornu (family Rhynchotrematidae) which proliferated in Central Iran and adjacent Afghanistan during Aeronian time.

Opis:
High-pressure induced phase transitions in a single crystal of gadolinium molybdate, $Gd_2(MoO_4)_3$ were studied by the Raman spectroscopy and ab initio calculations. The amorphization of the sample takes place at about 6 GPa in a mixture of alcohol as a pressure transmitting medium and begins as soon as 3 GPa in argon. In both media, the amorphization is irreversible in the 0-9 GPa investigated pressure range. The joint ab initio and Raman results allowed us to conclude that rotations of $MoO_4$ tetrahedra are the primary structural changes involved in the first phase transition (at about 2 GPa) explaining the softening of the low frequency modes at about 50 $cm^{-1}$. In addition, a progressive distortion of tetrahedra followed by a coordination change (IV-VI) of Mo atoms is observed through the five structural transitions including amorphization. This mechanism based on the steric hindrance of polyhedra is believed to be the most relevant for explaining the amorphization of $Gd_2(MoO_4)_3$.

Photovoltaic spectra of PbTe p-n junction have been measured in the infrared spectral region in the temperature range of 8-260 K. The p-n junctions have been formed by cadmium diffusion into the p-type PbTe crystals. From the positions of the photovoltaic maxima the energy gap of the diode material has been determined. In the presence of a magnetic field up to 7 T, a pronounced oscillatory behavior of the photovoltage was observed in the Faraday and Voigt configurations. Experiments were performed as a function of the magnetic field intensity at a constant wavelength of the incident light. The energy of the interband magnetooptical transitions between the Landau levels in PbTe was determined and compared with the theoretical model of Adler, describing the energy band structure for the IV-VI compounds.

Ordovician ostracods are described for the first time from Iran, enhancing the record of this group from the Lower Palaeozoic of the Middle East. The ostracods occur in the Shirgesht Formation, in the east central part of the country, and comprise Ogmoopsis achaemenid sp. nov., Cerninella aryana sp. nov., Ordovizona amyitisae sp. nov., cf. Aechmina? ventadorni, Vogdesella sp., and podocope taxa tentatively identified as species of Longiscula, Pullvillites, and Rectella. These taxa were hitherto unknown from this region. The ostracod−bearing interval is associated with trilobites (Neseuretinus) and brachiopods (Nicolella) that suggest a late Middle Ordovician age. Although the ostracod fauna is small, it demonstrates biogeographical links at genus−level, and possibly at species−level, with the fauna of the late Middle Ordovician Travesout Formation of western France, which also lay in a peri−Gondwanan palaeogeographical setting. It also suggests the potential use of some ostracods as stratigraphical tools for correlating Ordovician rock successions between Europe and the Middle East.

The morphology and organophosphatic shell structure of the paterinate brachiopod Askepasma is documented using new and previously collected specimens from the lower Cambrian of South Australia. Lack of adequately preserved material has seen the majority of paterinate specimens previously reported from South Australia referred to the genus Askepasma and treated under open nomenclature. Large collections of paterinates from the lower Cambrian Wilkawillina, Ajax, and Wirrapowie limestones in the Arrowie Basin, South Australia have prompted redescription of the type species Askepasma toddense and the erection of a new species, Askepasma saproconcha sp. nov. Askepasma saproconcha sp. nov. currently represents the oldest known brachiopod from the lower Cambrian successions in South Australia with a FAD in pre−trilo− bitic (Terreneuvian, Cambrian Stage 2, lower Atdabanian) strata in the basal part of the Wilkawillina and Wirrapowie limestones. Askepasma toddense predominantly occurs in Abadiella huoi Zone equivalent strata (Unnamed Cambrian Se− ries 2, Stage 3, middle–upper Atdabanian) in the upper part of the lower Wilkawillina, Wirrapowie, and Ajax limestones. The shell microstructure of Askepasma suggests a proximal stem group position within the Brachiopoda and similarities with tommotiid taxa provides further evidence that the ancestry of crown group brachiopods is firmly entrenched within the Tommotiida.

The birth of the field of photoinduced phase transitions was strongly influenced by the conceptual viewpoint expressed by Professor Y. Toyozawa on the condensation of relaxed excitons. Since this first period, twenty years ago, this young field has been expanding rapidly along a diversity of directions. Nowadays, it goes hand in hand with the challenges of today's science: emergence, nonlinearity, coherence, far away from equilibrium, for example. The control of the functionality of a material via photoexcited states poses many new fundamental questions. Some of them will be overviewed: (i) the nature of the control parameters and the nature of the relevant collective variables, especially the order parameters, which characterize the evolution of the system, (ii) the difference between photoinduced transformations under continuous light irradiation and those resulting from an ultrashort laser pulse, (iii) the physical mechanisms of ultrafast photoinduced phase transitions from the formation and proliferation of phototransformed entities to the softening of a collective mode.

Isoflavones in soybean have been well-known with many health-promoting effects on humans. This study aimed to purify isoflavones from the crude soybean extract by the static adsorption/desorption process on macroporous resins. A screening test of four commercial resins: D101, AB-8, Amberlite(R) XAD4, and Diaion HP20 according to their adsorption/desorption characteristic for isoflavones was investigated. All four resins showed high adsorption and desorption characteristics in which D101 resin was chosen as the most suitable resin for purifying isoflavones. Compositional analysis showed that daidzin and genistin were the main isoflavones in the crude soybean extract. The adsorption isotherms data of total isoflavones, daidzin, and genistin fitted well with the Langmuir model with R2>0.98. The dynamic adsorption conditions for the purification process of isoflavones on the D101 resin-packed column were selected at the bed volume (BV) of 200 mL, feed volume of 3.75 BV, and flow rate of 1.5 BV/h. The dynamic desorption was carried out with the elution solution of 70% (v/v) ethanol, elution volume of 2.5 BV, and flow rate of 1 BV/h. The total isoflavone content in the purified extract was 8.70-fold higher than its initial content in the crude soybean extract with a recovery yield of nearly 80%. The study results reveal a strong possibility for large-scale production of isoflavones for further application in functional food products or pharmaceutical products.

The grain scale of materials is an area still open for investigations within the field of materials science. The most helpful tools to perform this type of research are diffraction methods. Within the research project presented in this paper two experiments were carried out employing two different types of radiation: neutron (ISIS) and synchrotron (ESRF). The aim of the work was to describe the stress state in the necking zone during the occurrence of a damage phenomenon (Fig. 1.) in separate phase and to check the level of the homogeneity. The supplemental tools were the finite elements method and self-consistent modeling – it testified, confirmed and completed our experimental results and allowed us to formulate the justifiable conclusions.

Cambrian Series 2 shelly fossils from thick carbonate successions in East Antarctica have received limited systematic treatment through the 20th century. Described here are the East Antarctic camenellan tommotiids from the Shackleton Limestone in the Central Transantarctic Mountains and the Schneider Hills limestone in the Argentina Range. This material comes from both newly sampled collections and incompletely described material from older collections. The assemblage supports correlation to the Dailyatia odyssei Zone and Pararaia janeae Trilobite Zone of South Australia, with the newly examined specimens of Dailyatia decobruta from the Shackleton Limestone providing direct correlation to the Mernmerna Formation of the Ikara-Flinders Ranges and White Point Conglomerate of Kangaroo Island. These East Antarctic assemblages include five species referred to Dailyatia, in addition to an undetermined kennardiid species and fragments of the problematic Shetlandia multiplicata. The results further corroborate the notion that fossiliferous carbonate clasts found on King George Island were sourced from the same carbonate shelf as the Shackleton Limestone, with the taxon S. multiplicata found in both units. The Schneider Hills limestone in the Argentina Range has yielded sclerites of Dailyatia icari sp. nov., currently only known from this location.

Objectives. The airborne contaminant exposure levels experienced by poultry farmers have raised concerns about the possible health hazards associated with them. Thus, a longitudinal project was instituted in France to monitor these exposures in poultry workers and to evaluate the long-term effect on health. Method. Sixty-three workers in two different poultry housing systems were included (33 from floor-based systems and 30 from cage-based systems). Personal dust concentrations (over 2 days) and activity patterns (over 14 days) were collected and then modeled to obtain average long-term estimates. Health data were collected by questionnaire. Results. The mean daily time spent in the cage system was more than 2 hours longer than in the floor system. Two main common tasks accounted for ~70% of this time. Dust concentrations were higher in the floor system than in the cage system. The concentrations for the 14 days of known activity patterns estimated using the statistical model agreed well with the measured values. Several chronic respiratory symptoms were significantly associated with the high levels of long-term exposure estimated by the model. The highest risk was for chronic bronchitis symptoms (>4-fold higher for exposures of 0.1 mg/m3 of respirable dust). Conclusion. The presented modeling strategy can be used to estimate the long-term average personal exposure to respirable dust, and to study the association between dust exposure and chronic respiratory symptoms. This population of workers will be followed-up in subsequent examinations (3 years later) to determine whether the predictive model is valid, and whether long-term dust exposure is related to the incidence of respiratory symptoms and changes in pulmonary functions.

Reactions between heavy-ions at various energy regimes produce many nuclear fragments which can be populated in highly excited states. The study of these fragments, detected at the end of their particle decay, is important to investigate nuclear forces and structure effects. In recent years there have been many efforts to extend these studies towards the drip-lines, i.e. to systems far from the β-stability valley, by using accelerated radioactive beams. The development of such infrastructures is accompanied by the development of more powerful detectors and associated electronics, capable to identify ions with very different sizes and kinetic energies.
