- Opis:
- Picture of gender in H.Ch. Andersen’s fairy tales is very strongly rooted in the culture of the 19th century bourgeois. In his writings we find a lot of gender stereotypes. Femininity is associated with kindness, love (Gerda), devotion (Little Mermaid), religiosity (Eliza). We can also find a clear link between women and nature, especially gardens. This cultural image of the sexes, however, is only the first layer, under which are hidden Andersen’s frustrations and fears, connected with his bisexuality. The figure of the Little Mermaid can be understood as queer and homoerotic clue (theme of woman disguising in male outfit), hidden trace of the author’s love for Edward Collin (mermaid loses her voice, because she must not express their feelings). Sexuality is one of the main themes, pervades Andersen, and always turns out to be a de-structive force. Love and sex are exclusive – happy end of the Snow Queen and Thumbelina have no erotic tint, whereas passionate and tormented heroes of the Little Mermaid and the Ice Maiden die.
