The purpose of the work is to describe use of the computer program SIMPL designed for construction and analysis of radical tessellations of any computer simulated sample. The radical polyhedra (RP) Gellatly and Finney, J. Non-Cryst. Solids, vol. 50, p. 313 (1982) can be considered as a generalization of the Voronoi polyhedra more widely used in literature. An RP is a minimal polyhedron whose faces are sets of such points that distances from the points to tangent points of two neighboring atomic spheres are equal. The tessellation technique is a very effective tool for structural analysis of computer simulated samples, giving a great amount of easily accessible information. SIMPL allows to construct an RP network for a defined system and analyze the shape, composition and mutual geometrical relation of radical polyhedra and radical simplices. Implemented capabilities give, for example, the possibility of recognizing an atomic environments' shape and investigating the non-local order in computer simulated materials. The pattern recognition technique Laskowski R. et al., TASK Quart., vol. 1, p. 96 (1997) is based on analysis of the shape of the radical polyhedra, and contraction of short edges and small faces of the polyhedra. Non-local order analysis involves geometric relations between tessellation simplices.

Opis:
The main object of interest was a typical fuel assembly, which constitutes a core of the nuclear reactor. The aim of the paper is to describe the phenomena and calculate thermal-hydraulic characteristic parameters in the fuel assembly for a European Pressurized Reactor (EPR). To perform thermal-hydraulic calculations, the RELAP5 code was used. This code allows to simulate steady and transient states for reactor applications. It is also an appropriate calculation tool in the event of a loss-of-coolant accident in light water reactors. The fuel assembly model with nodalization in the RELAP5 (Reactor Excursion and Leak Analysis Program) code was presented. The calculations of two steady states for the fuel assembly were performed: the nominal steady-state conditions and the coolant flow rate decreased to 60% of the nominal EPR flow rate. The calculation for one transient state for a linearly decreasing flow rate of coolant was simulated until a new level was stabilized and SCRAM occurred. To check the correctness of the obtained results, the authors compared them against the reactor technical documentation available in the bibliography. The obtained results concerning steady states nearly match the design data. The hypothetical transient showed the importance of the need for correct cooling in the reactor during occurrences exceeding normal operation. The performed analysis indicated consequences of the coolant flow rate limitations during the reactor operation.

Opis:
The main goal of the paper is to provide a condition for which a maximum entropy generation occurs in a heat exchanger at constant inlet parameters (temperatures and mass flow rates). Knowing this condition is essential during the design of the heat exchanger as it allows designers to avoid one of its most unfavourable operating conditions in terms of thermodynamics. Entropy generation resulting from the resistance of heat-transferring fluids to flow was not taken into account. Entropy generation was analysed as a function of a heat flow rate at constant parameters at the inlet of a condenser and a counter-flow double-pipe heat exchanger. The analysis showed that for the condenser the entropy generation rate increases with the increase in the heat flow rate. The maximum entropy generation rate occurs for the maximum flow rate of the heat that can be transferred according to the definition of heat transfer effectiveness. For the counter-flow heat exchanger, the entropy generation as a function of the heat flow rate reaches maximum at constant inlet parameters (temperatures and mass flow rates). It appeared that the peak entropy generation, or the largest exergy loss, occurs when the outlet temperatures of the fluids are equal. This assertion was verified against data obtained from a simulator of the counter-flow heat exchanger for two different relations between heat capacity rates.

Opis:
A pair potential for lead (Pb) is extracted from the ab-initio energy-volume data using the lattice inversion procedure of Carlsson and co-workers [Phil. Mag. 41 (1980), p. 241]. Because of a limited accuracy of the ab-initio techniques, we extrapolate the energy-volume data for low-density systems with suitable analytical tail functions. We discuss the dependence of the molecular dynamics (MD) simulation structural results and the elastic modules on the choice of the cohesive energy tail function. The MD-simulated radial distribution functions (RDFs), obtained for several energy tails, in several temperatures are discussed.

Opis:
A steam generator in a nuclear power plant with a light water reactor is a heat exchanger, in which the heat is being transferred from the primary to the secondary loop (it links the primary and secondary loops). When the power plant is running, the inlet parameters (temperatures and mass flow rates) on both sides of the steam generator can change. It is important to know how the changes of these parameters affect the steam generator performance. The complexity of the processes taking place in the steam generator makes it difficult to create a simulator reflecting its performance under changed conditions. In order to simplify the task, the steam generator was considered as a ‘black box’ with the aim of examining how the changes of the inlet parameters affect the changes of the outlet ones. On the basis of the system (steam generator) response, a simple mathematical model of the steam generator under variable load conditions was proposed. In the proposed model, there are two dimensionless parameters and three constant coefficients. A linear relation between these dimensionless parameters was obtained. The correctness of the model was verified against the data obtained with a steam generator simulator for European Pressured Reactor and AP-600 reactors. A good agreement between the proposed model and the simulator data was achieved.

Opis:
The internal diameter of a tube in a ‘church window’ condenser was estimated using an entropy generation minimization approach. The adopted model took into account the entropy generation due to heat transfer and flow resistance from the cooling-water side. Calculations were performed considering two equations for the flow resistance coefficient for four different roughness values of a condenser tube. Following the analysis, the internal diameter of the tube was obtained in the range of 17.5 mm to 20 mm (the current internal diameter of the condenser tube is 22 mm). The calculated diameter depends on and is positively related to the roughness assumed in the model.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to examine the efficiency of the thermal wave type adsorption refrigerating equipment working on a pair of activated carbon and methanol. Adsorption units can work in trigeneration systems and in applications driven by waste heat. They can be built also as a part of hybrid sorption-compressor systems, and they are very popular in solar refrigeration systems and energy storage units. The device examined in this study operates in a special mode called thermal wave. This mode allows to achieve higher efficiency rates than the normal mode of operation, as a significant contributor to transport heat from one to the other adsorber. To carry out the experiment a test bench was built, consisting of two cylindrical adsorbers filled with activated carbon, condenser, evaporator, oil heater and two oil coolers. Thermal oil circulation was responsible for providing and receiving heat from adsorbers. In order to perform the correct action a special control algorithm device was developed and implemented to keep the temperature in the evaporator at a preset level. The experimental results show the operating parameters changes in both adsorbers. Obtained COP (coefficient of performance) for the cycle was 0.13.
