Opis:
Analytical hierarchy process, developed by Saaty, is a multi-criteria decision making method. It creates a hierarchy using the goal, decision criteria and decision alternatives, and sorts the various alternatives according to their relative importance. The aim in AHP is to choose the most suitable and important alternative, by making an arrangement from the most important to the least. In this study, a real life material selection application in a hotel building is described by using AHP method. Wall materials such as brick blocks, pumice concrete block, sand autoclaved aerated concrete blocks are decision alternatives and mechanical properties, physical properties, ease of application and costs of these materials are the decision factors. The analysis was performed based on the opinion of an expert and the most suitable alternative is selected. Also, it is concluded that the order related to the alternatives is reliable for the decision markers. Thus, a decision supporting method for a construction company using AHP applications is developed.

In this paper well-preserved isoetalean microsporophyll, containing in situ microspores, is described from the uppermost part of the Utrillas Formation (latest Albian) in Teruel Province, northeastern Spain. Similar but dispersed microspores were described previously as Peromonolites. Fossil plant impressions and compressions including the sporophyll lamina and microsporangium are referred to the fossil genus Isoetites. Although Isoetes-like megafossil remains, often with in situ or associated megaspores, are known from quite a few Cretaceous sites, and dispersed microspores are known, the presence of intact microsporangia is rare. Herein we suggest that microsporangia may have dispersed in masses, possibly representing a new unknown strategy in microspore dispersal in this group of plants.

Opis:
A new ginglymodian fish, Isanichthys lertboosi, is described from the Phu Kradung Formation, north-eastern Thailand, a freshwater deposit of probable Late Jurassic age. The species is represented by four specimens, from the Phu Noi locality, associated with a rich fauna of sharks, turtles, crocodiles, and theropod and sauropod dinosaurs. One specimen is an isolated braincase, which provides characters rarely observed in extinct ginglymodians. The species is referred to the genus Isanichthys, a taxon originally described on the basis of a single specimen from the Phu Nam Jun locality, a slightly younger site approximately 75 km from Phu Noi. Isanichthys is mainly distinguished by frontals slightly narrower anteriorly than posteriorly, two anterior infraorbitals not in contact with the orbit, reduced preorbital region, and a small orbit and a cheek region completely covered by bones. The new species is characterized, among other characters, by a dermal component of the sphenotic visible on the cheek, one pair of extrascapulars plus a small median one, the presence of few suborbitals (ca. 4 or 6) arranged in one row, and a median dorsal row of scales with spine. Comparisons with other ginglymodian taxa and a cladistic analysis indicates that Isanichthys (Lepidotes) latifrons from the Late Jurassic of England, as well as probably Isanichthys (Lepidotes) luchowensis from the Early or Middle Jurassic of Sichuan, China, form a clade with both Thai species of Isanichthys. The new species provides evidence of the high diversity of ginglymodian fishes in the Phu Kradung Formation and suggests a new hypothesis of phylogenetic relationships among extinct ginglymodians.

Using a quantum mechanical approach, we compute the ballistic electron emission microscopy current distribution in reciprocal space to compare experimental and theoretical spectroscopic I(V) curves. In the elastic limit, this formalism is a "parameter-free" representation of the problem. At low voltages, low temperatures, and for thin metallic layers, the elastic approximation is enough to explain the experiments (ballistic conditions). At low temperatures, inelastic effects can be taken into account approximately by introducing an effective electron-electron lifetime as an imaginary part in the energy. Ensemble Monte Carlo calculations were also performed to obtain ballistic electron emission microscopy currents in good agreement with the previous approach.

We propose an indirect method of ASTM D-1200 for measurement of viscosity from 0.1 to 30 stokes (St) using Ford cup 5 (range 2~ 12 St) by developing a statistical relation. General purpose low styrene content polyester resin (without adding initiator, hardener and accelerator) was used for viscosity measurement. In existing ASTM D 1200 standard, ford cups (1-4) are used to measure the viscosity up to 2 St, while fifth cup is used for measurement from 2 to 12 St. Viscosity above 12 St is not estimated using existing ASTM D- 1200 method. In contrast, our method and statistical relation proposed in this paper estimates viscosity in the flexible range of 0.1 to 30 St by using Ford cup 5 only. The estimated values were confirmed by existing ASTM D-1200 (0.1 to 12 St) and by using Ubbelohde viscometer (12 to 30 St). Values estimated above 12 St are from the proposed model are also in good conformance (percentage error ~ 5% or less) with experimental results. The satisfaction level of the estimated values with the experiments suggests that the model has also the potential for application to paints, polymer and oil industry.

The correct estimation of water consumption is a very important task, from the theoretical and practical point of view. Distribution systems naturally fluctuate between periods of high and low water usage. Good knowledge of how water use is distributed during the time is critical to accurate water system works. It is particularly important in engineering activity during designing of water supply systems. In Poland from 90ties of the XX century, constant decreased in production and consumption of water is observed. The article has been written on the basis of technical literature renew and the data obtain from Water Supply and Sewerage Company for the Area of Czestochowa. The Company operates and controls the second longest water-pipe network in Poland. The paper presents data concerning water consumption in chosen area in Czestochowa. For the purpose of this study the operating data from the period of 2010–2011 were analyzed. In the area of Kawie Góry are single-family houses only, the buildings are connected to the sewer system, hot water is prepared locally. Number of customers supplied from the water network is 1,472 persons. The following parameters as: unitary water consumption [dm3/P d], day and hour coefficient peaking factor [Nd, Nh] were calculated. The water consumption in households was 103dm3/P d in 2010 year and 95dm3/P d in 2011 year. The day coefficient peaking factor was Nd = 1,94–3,5, the hour coefficient peaking factor was Nh = 1,85–2,69. It was shown, that calculated ratios for the area of Kawie Góry are different from the values in the existing literature. Similar differences have been presented by other authors too. It seems advisable to carry out extensive studies to verify these values. They can be used in design practice then and corresponds to the currently operating conditions.

The variation of the lightning activities over Sri Lanka and surrounded costal belt (5.75ºN-10.00ºN and 79.50ºE-89.00ºE) is studied using lightning flash data of Lightning Imaging Sensor (LIS) which was launched in November 1997 for NASA’s Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM). The LIS data in the period of 1998 to 2014 are based on this study and there were 23838 lightning flashes over the landmass covered by Sri Lanka during considered period. The data show that average flash density has an increasing trend of 0.093 flashes km-2 year-1. The linear trend is shown in annual flash count with the fitted straight line. Although there is a slight variation between years, there is a clearly increasing trend with 24 flashes per year. There is an incremental trend in distributing of lightning activities all over the country with time. Warming trends of surface temperature and atmosphere may have a correlation with increasing trend of the lightning activities over Sri Lanka and surrounded costal belt.

Few studies have shown that Cnestis ferruginea possess some therapeutic properties. The present study was aimed screening the extracts of the fruits and leaves of Cnestis ferruginea for phytochemicals using crude screening and gas chromatography-mass spectrophotometer (GC-MS) methods, and also antimicrobial activity against clinical isolates. Preparation of the extracts (aqueous and ethanolic), identification of isolates, and antimicrobial sensitivity were done using previously reported standard methodologies. Replicate readings for the antimicrobial sensitivity were analysed using analysis of variance at 95% level of significance. The result of the crude qualitative screening revealed the presence of phenol, terpenes, alkaloids, saponins, tannin and polyphenol in various amounts in both the leaves and fruits. Quantitative analysis using GC-MS revealed a total of 14 similar phytochemicals each in the leaves and fruits of the study plant in varying amounts. In the fruits, phenol had the highest concentration of 15.01%, followed by terpenes (10.64%), alkaloid (5.43%), and tannins (5.16%). Others were anthocyanins, phytate, phytosterol, steroids, saponins, cardiac glycosides, oxalate, flavonoids, cyanogenic glycosides and coumarin with concentrations that ranged from to 0.01- 4.21%. On the other hand, in the leaves, alkaloids had the highest concentration of 31.62%, followed by phenol (20.59%), phytate (15.18%), and tannin (12.34%). Others include were flavonoid, terpenes, phytosterol, cardiac glycosides, saponins, cyanogenic glycosides, oxalate, anthocyanins, steroids and coumarin with concentrations that ranged from 0.16-8.45%. The isolates were identified as Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Proteus spp. The results of the antimicrobial sensitivity revealed varying zones of inhibitions; however, it increased as the concentration of the extract increased. The observed highest zones of inhibitions were 33.86 mm for the fruit ethanolic extract and 30.56 mm for the aqueous extract of the leaves against Proteus and Staphylococcus aureus, respectively.

Mass casualty scenarios of radiation exposure require high throughput biological dosimetry techniques for population triage, in order to rapidly identify individuals, who require clinical treatment. Accurate dose estimates can be made by biological dosimetry, to predict the acute radiation syndrome (ARS) within days after a radiation accident or a malicious act involving radiation. Timely information on dose is important for the medical management of acutely irradiated persons [1]. The aim of the study was to evaluate the usefulness of the micronuclei (MNi) scoring procedure in an experimental mode, where 500 binucleated cells were analyzed in different exposure dose ranges. Whole-body exposure was simulated in an in vitro experiment by irradiating whole blood collected from one healthy donor with 60 MeV protons and 250 keV X-rays, in the dose range of 0.3–4.0 Gy. For achieving meaningful results, sample scoring was performed by three independent persons, who followed guidelines described in detail by Fenech et al. [2, 3]. Compared results revealed no signifi cant differences between scorers, which has important meaning in reducing the analysis time. Moreover, presented data based on 500 cells distribution, show that there are significant differences between MNi yields after 1.0 Gy exposure of blood for both protons and X-rays, implicating this experimental mode as appropriate for the distinction between high and low dose-exposed individuals, which allows early classification of exposed victims into clinically relevant subgroups.

Opis:
Probiotics and prebiotics play an important role in human and animal nutrition. Those research studies were performed to evaluate the potential of using legume sprouts as carriers for probiotic strain of Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG. They determined the effect of legume species, temperature of sprouting, and inoculation methods of seeds or growing sprouts on the survival and/or growth of probiotics. It was found that the count of bacteria in sprouts depended on the germination temperature, inoculation methods as well as on the species of legume used as a carrier. The beans examined (Adzuki and Mung) germinated effectively at a temperature between 25 ÷ 35 ºC. And the lentil sprouted most effectively at 25 ºC. In the case of soy-bean and lentil, the temperature of 35 ºC caused the germination efficiency to decrease. The growth of Lb. rhamnosus GG was reported only in the case of the lentil and soy-bean sprouts obtained from the seeds imbibed in an inoculum and germinated at 25 ºC. The count of probiotic bacteria was 3.1×10⁶ and 7.18×10⁶ CFU per grams of fresh mass, respectively. The sprouts obtained from the bean seeds analyzed did not provide any conditions for probiotic bacteria to survive and grow. The best carrier for the probiotic bacteria studied were the soy-bean sprouts; in their case, after inoculation of seeds and using a suspension of probiotic bacteria, the sprouts obtained at 25 ºC had the best quality parameters.
Probiotyki i prebiotyki odgrywają ważna rolę w żywieniu zwierząt i człowieka. 25 ÷ 35 ºC. Soczewica natomiast najwydajniej kiełkowała w temp. 25 ºC. W przypadku kiełków soczewicy i soi temperatura 35 ºC wpłynęła na zmniejszenie wydajności kiełkowania. Wzrost Lb. rhamnosus GG stwierdzono tylko w przypadku kiełków soczewicy i soi otrzymanych z nasion namoczonych w inokulum i kiełkowanych w temp. 25 ºC. Ich liczba w kiełkach wynosiła odpowiednio 3.1×10⁶ i 7.18×10⁶ jkt/g świeżej masy. Kiełki uzyskane z nasion analizowanych fasoli nie zapewniały warunków do przeżywalności i wzrostu bakterii probiotycznych. Najlepszym nośnikiem badanych bakterii probiotycznych były nasiona soi, w przypadku których w temp. 25 ºC otrzymano kiełki o najlepszych parametrach jakościowych po zastosowaniu inokulacji nasion zawiesiną bakterii probiotycznych.

Purpose: Depressive disorders and obesity belong to the most frequently occurring diseases. Improper nutritional behaviours are observed in patients suffering from recurring depressive disorders. We have undertaken research aimed at comparing the body weight composition and the content of selected nutrients in the food intake of patients with diagnosed depressive disorders. Materials and methods: 131 patients (76 women and 55 men) suffering from depressive episode took part in the study. The patients had their body composition analysed using electrical bioimpedance measured by a MALTRON BioScan 920-2 device. The assessment of the diet was conducted using a 24-hour interview concerning the day preceding the examination. Results: Male with diagnosed depression and obesity were more often married or had lower level of education as compared to male with the normal body weight. Obese female with diagnosed depression had more episodes of the disease and were older as compared to female with the normal body weight. Both obese male and female were characterised by a higher percentage content of visceral adipose tissue, subcutaneous adipose tissue and a higher VAT (visceral adipose tissue)/SAT (subcutaneous adipose tissue) ratio as well as a lower content of fat-free body mass. Conclusions: Patients with diagnosed depression, with the normal body weight and obesity, were characterised by an inappropriate supply of proteins, carbohydrates, total fats, saturated and unsaturated fatty acids and dietary fibre.

This paper seeks to share the experience of the Ultra Low CO2 Steelmaking programme (ULCOS) established in 2002 by a number of EU members on how to cut down CO2 emission by at least 50 % of the present volume of emission. Global environmental challenge today is the issue of climate change resulting in devastating effects such as flooding in many countries of the world. One of the major causes is the CO2 emission from different industries including iron and steel industries. The total global CO2 emission was put at 29Gt in 2007 and projected to be 37Gt by the 2020. Out of this volume the steel industry accounts for 3-4 % and this call for concern from stakeholders to come up with measures to reduce or control the emission of the green house gas. These measures are necessary considering the growth of the iron and steel industry in the last 50 years. Important items considered include among others carbon emission and recovery, carbon capture and storage and new iron and steel making processes and their potential for CO2 reduction.
