Opis:
Friction Stir Spot Welding is one of the most contemporary methods of joining metals and alloys in their solid state. The ability to join elements made of aluminum alloys allows for utilizing this method in the manufacturing of aircraft structures while lowering the work load, costs, and weight, without sacrificing or even having better strength parameters than classic methods of joining elements. It ensures constant joint parameters, however it requires the use of optimal welding parameters such as: the rotational speed of the tool, tool delve depth, and welding time. The work presents the results of experiments conducted on 7074 aluminum sheet metal that was 1.8 and 0.8 mm thick, which conducted in accordance with the PS/DK32 research plan. The welding tests were done on a dedicated spot welding machine, while the strength tests consisted of static tensile strength tests. In the final part of the article contains an analysis and interpretation of the results.

Opis:
The Refill Friction Stir Spot Welding (RFSSW) method consists of three variable process parameters: rotational speed, tool plunge time and depth. The article presents an analysis of the effects tool plunge depth on shear strength. For this purpose, samples had a shearing load applied in a device prepare for this purpose. The shear strength was determined. An analysis of the results showed that tool plunge has a large effect on the strength of the joint and the structure of the joint. Depending on the tool plunge value, three types of joint failure were observed during the static shear strength test.

This article presents the influence of the brushing process on residual stress and surface roughness of EN AW-2024-T3 aluminum alloy joints welded using the Friction Stir Welding (FSW) method. Butt joints with thicknesses of 2 mm were brushing with using ceramic brush. The aim of the study was to find optimal parameters of the brushing process, which would significantly improve the functional properties of welded joints. The experiments were carried out in two steps. In the first stage of the research, the feed rate was changed in the range f = 40 ÷ 120 mm / min with a constant brushing depth d = 0.5 mm. The roughness decreased from Sa = 5.285 µm for the specimen after welding to Sa = 2.460 µm for the f = 120 mm/min and d = 0.5 mm. The change in the parameters of the brushing process did not have a significant impact on the state of residual stresses. Hence, in the second step, the brushing depth was increased in steps of 0.1 mm. The best properties were obtained for f = 120 mm / min and d = 0.6 mm (variant 6A), where roughness was Sa = 0.443 µm and compressive stresses σ = -118 MPa.

This paper presents the results of experimental research on the fabrication of thin-walled panels with longitudinal stiffening ribs by the single point incremental sheet forming technique. The bead-stiffened panels were made of Alclad 2024-T3 aluminium alloy sheets commonly used in aircraft structures. The influence of forming parameters and tool strategy on surface quality and the possibility of obtaining stiffening ribs with the required profile and depth was tested through experimental research. Two tool path strategies, spiral with continuous sinking and multi-step z-level contouring, were considered. The results of the experiments were used to verify the finite element-based numerical simulations of the incremental forming process. It was found that the main parameter which influences the formability of test sheets is the tool path strategy; the tool path strategy with multi-step z-level contouring allowed the rib to be formed to a depth of 3.53 mm without risk of cracking. However a greater depth of rib equal of 5.56 mm was achieved with the continuous tool path. The tool path strategy was also the main parameter influencing the surface finish of the drawpiece during the single point incremental forming process.

Opis:
Friction stir welding (FSW) is a solid state joining process used to join metals and their alloys. The main goal of this paper was to select the optimal welding parameters such as: rotational speed and the feed rate of the tool. The article presents the results of the tests on welding 1 mm thick 2024 aluminum sheet according to the statistical 3-level completed plan PS/DK 32. The rotational speed of the tool varied within the range of 1100–1300 rpm and the feed rate within the range of 40–60 mm/min. For these parameters, the analyses of the experiment repeatability, impact significance and adequacy of equations were conducted.

The paper presents the influence of simple structural modifications of the adherend on the fatigue properties of adhesive joints subjected to peel. The considered modifications consisted in making a chamfer and fillet on the front edge of the adherend. The purpose of such modifications was to locally increase the thickness of the adhesive layer in the area of stress concentration. Fatigue strength tests were carried out using an electrodynamic shaker at the resonant frequency of the flexible adherend. On the basis of fatigue strength tests carried out at the limited number of cycles equal to 2×106, it was shown that a local increase in the thickness of the adhesive layer in the front part of the joint allows a significant increase in the joint's fatigue lifetime and fatigue strength. The greatest effect was shown for the variant with the fillet R2. In this case, an increase in fatigue strength of 33.1% compared to the base variant was demonstrated. For the fatigue stress level of 20.25 MPa, an increase in fatigue lifetime of 337.7% was also demonstrated. Based on the conducted research, it was shown that the reason for the improvement of the fatigue properties of the joints due to the local increase in the thickness of the adhesive layer is the phenomenon of energy absorption in the frontal area of the joint. Absorption of energy that inhibits the process of fatigue results from, among others, local flexibility of the joint, as well as nucleation of cracks in the locally increased volume of the adhesive.
W pracy przedstawiono wyniki badań określających wpływ modyfikacji konstrukcyjnych elementu klejonego na właściwości zmęczeniowe połączeń klejowych poddanych oddzieraniu. Rozważane modyfikacje polegały na wykonaniu fazy oraz promienia na czołowej krawędzi elementu klejonego. Celem takich modyfikacji było miejscowe zwiększenie grubości warstwy kleju w obszarze koncentracji naprężeń. Badania wytrzymałości zmęczeniowej przeprowadzono za pomocą wzbudnika elektrodynamicznego przy częstotliwości rezonansowej klejonej płytki. Na podstawie badań wytrzymałości zmęczeniowej przeprowadzonych przy granicznej liczbie cykli równej 2×106 wykazano, że lokalny wzrost grubości warstwy kleju w czołowej części złącza pozwala na znaczny wzrost trwałości zmęczeniowej oraz wytrzymałości zmęczeniowej. Najkorzystniejszy efekt wykazano dla wariantu z promieniem R2. W tym przypadku wykazano wzrost wytrzymałości zmęczeniowej o 33,1% w stosunku do wariantu bazowego. Dla poziomu naprężenia zmęczeniowego 20,25 MPa wykazano również wzrost trwałości zmęczeniowej o 337,7%. Na podstawie przeprowadzonych badań wykazano, że przyczyną poprawy właściwości zmęczeniowych połączeń na skutek lokalnego zwiększenia grubości warstwy kleju jest zjawisko pochłaniania energii w obszarze czołowym złącza. Absorpcja energii hamująca proces zmęczenia wynika m.in. z miejscowego uelastycznienia złącza, jak również zarodkowania pęknięć w lokalnie zwiększonej objętości kleju.

The paper presents the results of experimental investigations, the aim of which was to determine the degree of weakening of skin sheet of the thin-walled structure through a single-row welded joints made by Refill Friction Stir Spot Welding (RFSSW) technology. At the beginning, a short metallographic analysis of the weld was carried out, defining the characteristic areas of the microstructure. Then, comparative tests were carried out on the thin-walled structure sample in the form of a single-row skin-stringer joint. The structures made with the discussed technology of welding were compared with the traditionally joined structure by riveting. It has been shown that in the case of the welded structure, the skin sheet is weakened by more than 6% to a lesser extent than in the case of riveted. However, it was shown that the cracking path in the tensiled welded sheet runs along an unpredictable path, deviating from the line marked by the welds’ row. While in the case of riveted joint the cracking propagation along the row of rivets was revealed. The analyzes of fracture surfaces for both cases using scanning electron microscopy were also undertaken, thus undertaking preliminary considerations on the mechanism of fracture.

Refill Friction Stir Spot Welding (RFSSW) is a technology used for joining solid materials that was developed in Germany in 2002 by GKSS-GmbH as a variant of the conventional friction stir spot welding (FSSW) [1]. In the RFSSW technology, the welding tool consists of a fixed outer part and rotating inner parts, which are called a pin and a sleeve. The tool for RFSSW is designed to plasticize the material of the parts to be joined by means of a rotary movement. The design of the tool allows independent vertical movement of both elements of the welding tool. This allows obtaining spot welds without creating holes that could weaken the structure. The main advantage of RFSSW is the potential for replacing the technologies that add weight to the structure or create discontinuities, such as joining with screws or rivets. Thus, RFSSW has great potential in the automotive, shipbuilding and aviation industries. Furthermore, the technology can be used to join different materials that could not be connected using other joining methods. The main objective of this work is to understand the physical and mechanical aspects of the RFSSW method - including the residual stress state inside the weld and around the joint. The results of the investigations can help to determine optimal parameters that could increase the strength and fatigue performance of the joint and to prove the significant advantage of RFSSW connections over other types of joints. The work assumes the correlation of two mutually complementary investigation methods: numerical analyses and experimental studies carried out with diffraction methods. The comparison between numerical and experimental results makes potentially possible the determination of degree of fatigue degradation of the material by observing the macroscopic stress state and the broadening of the diffraction peak width (FWHM), which is an indicator of the existence of micro-stress related to the dislocation density and grain size.

The paper presents the results of research aimed at comparing two stringer joining technologies of stiffened panels. Experimental tests were carried out on the basis of uniaxial compression of thin-walled panels stiffened with two parallel stringers. The panels consist of a skin plate and stringers joined with two techniques: riveting and refill friction stir spot welding (RFSSW). The aim of the investigations was to determine the amount of the critical load, the character of the structure's work in the range of post-buckling behaviour and the mode of panel destruction. For deformation measurements, an optical scanner Aramis based on the digital image correlation (DIC) technique was used. The research conducted enabled the assessment of the effectiveness of the RFSSW technology of joining the semi-monocoque structures, taking into account the range of post-critical deformations caused both to the local and global loss of stability. The compression tests have shown that the plate with welded stringers with a spacing of 29.5 mm exhibits the ultimate load similar to the variant of the riveted panel. It was also observed that the nature and number of buckling half-waves depend on the applied load and spacing between connectors.

The article presents the results of friction tests conducted on EN AW-2024 Alclad aluminium alloy sheets. The lubrication efficiency of oleic acid, mineral and vegetable oils with the addition of SiO2 and TiO2 nanoparticles was determined using the strip drawing test to assess the friction conditions in the flange area in the deep drawing process. The samples in the form of sheet metal strips were pulled between countersamples with a rounded surface at a speed of 2.5 mm/s. Gear oil and oleic acid demonstrated the lowest value of the coefficient of friction (COF) in the whole range of nominal pressures investigated. The lowest efficiency in reducing the COF was shown by hydraulic oil, olive oil and machine oil. A high content of TiO2 nanoparticles (0.5-0.9%wt%) is beneficial in the friction process involving oleic acid.
W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań tarcia blach ze stopu aluminium EN AW-2024-T3 Alclad. Efektywność smarowania za pomocą kwasu oleinowego, olejów mineralnych oraz roślinnych z dodatkami nanocząstek SiO2 oraz TiO2 została określona za pomocą testu przeciągania blachy używanego do oceny warunków tarcia panujących w kołnierzowej części wytłoczki w procesie głębokiego wytłaczania. Próbki w postaci pasów blachy przeciągano pomiędzy przeciwpróbkami o zaokrąglonej powierzchni (R = 200 mm) z prędkością 2,5 mm/s. Olej przekładniowy oraz kwas oleinowy zapewniły najmniejszą wartość współczynnika tarcia w całym zakresie analizowanych nacisków nominalnych. Najmniejszą efektywność zmniejszania współczynnika tarcia wykazały olej hydrauliczny, oliwa z oliwek oraz olej maszynowy. Najkorzystniejszy efekt zmniejszenia wartości współczynnika tarcia wynikający z dodatku nanocząstek SiO2 jest widoczny dla kwasu oleinowego przy zawartości nanocząstek 0,5% (wagowo). Wysoka zawartość nanocząstek TiO2 (0,5-0,9% wagowo) jest korzystna podczas procesu tarcia z udziałem kwasu oleinowego.

This article presents the results of research aimed at determining the influence of selected nanofillers of vinyl ester resin on the mechanical properties of the cured resin. The influence of the resin with nanofillers as a matrix on the properties of the unidirectional CFRP composite was also investigated. Graphite, silicon oxide and titanium dioxide nanopowders were used as resin nanofillers. Each of the fillers was considered in two different contents, i.e. 1 wt.% and 2 wt.%. The variants with such nanofillers content were compared with the unfilled reference variant. The uniaxial tensile strength tests of the resin samples were carried out, showing the possibility of increasing the strength by 19.35% for the variant 1 wt.% of silica nanopowder content. For CFRP composites, the possibility of increasing the strength in the three-point bending test by 25.57% due to the use of a matrix reinforced with graphite nanopowder with a content of 1 wt.% was demonstrated. Based on the analysis of fracture surfaces performed using SEM microscopy, it was shown that the fillers used lead to a significant improvement in the adhesion of the matrix to the composite fibers.

The final accuracy of the parts formed using single point incremental forming greatly depends on the mechanical properties of the material to be formed and the residual stress formation. In this paper, an X-ray diffraction technique was used to study the distribution of the residual stress along the generating line of the conical drawpiece. A DC04 steel sheet with a thickness of 0.8 mm was used as a test material. The basic mechanical properties of the DC04 sheet metal were determined in the uniaxial tensile test according to the EN ISO 6892–1:2016. It was found that the maximum amount of the residual stress existed in a point located in the midway between a base and a truncation of the drawpiece. In the outer surface of the drawpiece, the orange peel defect associated with a rough surface appearance after SPIF a drawpiece, was observed. In contrast, the inner surface of component was characterized by linear grooves associated with the interaction of tool tip with the sheet surface. This defect is mainly influenced by vertical step size.

Butt joints made of two 2024‑T3 aluminum alloy sheets with the thickness of 1 mm were shot peened with glass beads. The experiments were carried out according to the statistical 3‑level completed plan PS/DC 32 . The technological parameters were changed in the range: pressure p = 0.4–0.6 MPa and peening time t = 1–3 min. As a result of the conducted research, adequate equations describing the effect of the analyzed parameters on the surface roughness were obtained. Shot peening with glass beads significantly reduced the sur‑ face roughness from Ra = 5.2 µm to Ra = 1.42 µm. This treatment provides high compressive residual stresses and the increase of the surface layer hardness. The results show that shot peening is a highly efficient and cost‑effective mechanical treatment used for improving the mechanical properties of the butt joints made with the FSW method.
