W prezentacji każdej z kobiet lub grupy kobiet wskazano na najważniejsze problemy egzegetyczne i współczesne próby ich rozwiązania.
This article presents a characterization of several women identified in the New Testament, either explicitly or implicitly, as preachers of the Gospel: (1) Mary Magdalene and the other women at the tomb of Jesus; (2) the Samaritan woman in John 4:4–42; (3) Prisca/Priscilla; (4) Euodia and Syntyche in Philippians 4:2–3. The article highlights the historical and theological context of their activity and defines the content and object of their proclamation, i.e. the Gospel. The presentation of each woman or group points out the major exegetical problems presented by the text, and contemporary attempts to resolve them.

The fulfillment of “the Scriptures” in John 17:12 has long been a bone of contention among commentators on the Fourth Gospel. The majority of authors have argued that ἡ γραφή unmistakably refers to a passage in the Hebrew Bible. Wendy Sproston (North) and Francis Moloney, however, picking up on an earlier observation by Edwin Freed, suggest Jesus’ own words as a more appropriate referent of ἡ γραφή in this verse. The issue of the correct scriptural referent is intrinsically connected with the question of the thematic referent within the verse in question. As it turns out, the fulfillment of the scripture can refer to either the tragic fate of Judas or the preserving of Jesus’ other disciples. The article surveys recent scholarship on these issues in order to identify the most convincing solutions.

An intriguing point of disagreement is evident among recent commentators on Mark 12:41-44 as to how we should understand the poor widow’s offering, whether as a positive or negative image. The crucial issue, raised for the first time by Addison G. Wright, is a proper grasp of the immediate narrative context of the poor widow’s story, which in his case produced the lamentable reading of the widow’s “deed.” Nevertheless, by widening the immediate narrative context and reading the account within the larger Markan framework, the interpretative ambiguity disappears. The widow is presented to Jesus’ disciples, and to the readers of the Markan story, as a positive example of selfdenial motivated by faith, love and devotion toward God. Thus, she not only stands as a symbol of the faithful remnant of Israel, but, most importantly, presents a picture of Jesus’ own self-offering on the cross.

The article deals with the Johannine narrative on the foot-washing, giving a critical review of the current scholarship on the interpretation of Jesus’ gesture (Part 1) and adding a new argument in favor of a penitential reading of the pericope (Part 2). The first part of the study presents status quaestionis, summarizing various interpretations, distilled into three categories: (1) naturalistic or socio-cultural, (2) symbolic, and (3) sacramental. This initial survey starts with a review of all possible ancient cultural contexts, both pagan and Jewish, in which foot-washing occurred, followed by various possible readings of the pericope based on these backgrounds; our analysis suggests that the purely naturalistic explanations do not resolve satisfactorily all the complexities of the text. Next, at least fifteen arguments are enumerated in favor of a symbolic interpretation, with  a short survey of noteworthy examples of this approach. Then, various sacramental readings are presented, with a special focus on the baptismal explanation, which indeed has held the most prominent position among the sacramental interpretations within the historical exegesis of the text.

The article advances a hypothesis that certain elements in the Johannine characterization of Jesus and Peter can be profitably interpreted through the lens of the ancient rhetorical device of syncrisis. The analysis consists of six main parts. First, the hypothesis itself is laid out in detail. Second, the Jewish and Christian uses of syncrisis around the turn of era is described, as proof for the possibility that this rhetorical technique was employed in the FG. Third, the status quaestionis on the use of syncrisis in the FG is provided. Fourth, some arguments are presented to justify the choice of progymnasmata as a methodological framework in the exposition of σύνκρισις between Jesus and Peter. It is argued that the ancient rhetorical exercises called progymnasmata, which contain a reliable and helpful description of ancient syncrisis, can thus provide useful criteria in the search for elements of syncrisis in the Johannine description of the relationship between Jesus and Peter. Fifth, the Johannine comparison between Jesus and Peter is viewed according to some of the basic rules of the progymnasmatic theory of syncrisis. Sixth, a detailed analysis of a few elements of the Johannine syncrisis between Jesus and Peter is presented.

The scope of the present study is the symbolic analysis of the two interwoven Markan narratives about the healing of the woman with the flow of blood (5:25-34) and the raising of Jairus’ daughter (5:21-24.35-43). The principal thesis of this work consists in interpreting both women as symbols of Israel. The study begins with the presentation of the methodological premises of symbolic analysis. The main methodological premise of this work is the conviction that the literary sense of this pericope is in fact imbued with symbolism. Then there is a presentation of three criteria which help in detecting symbols in the biblical text: textual probability, conventions probability and contextual probability. Subsequently, in order to lend credence to the principal thesis of the article, seventeen literary elements found in Mark 5:21-43 are discussed; each of them meets the first two criteria and lends itself to symbolic interpretation of the two women as representations of Israel. The cumulative weight of these seventeen elements creates a rather strong cumulative argument in favor of the main thesis. Finally, the conformity between the symbolic interpretation of these women and both the immediate and global contexts of this pericope is discussed. The presence of this conformity meets the third criterion of contextual probability. The article thus offers a convincing case for the symbolic interpretation of the hemorrhaging woman and Jairus’ daughter in Mark 5:21-43 as representations of Israel.

The article deals with the concept of work as reflected in the Fourth Gospel, encompassing the two cognate lexemes ἐργάζομαι and ἔργον. The analysis is organized according to the subjects who are performing a given work, to wit: the Father, the Son, Jesus’ disciples (including Abraham) and, finally, the people hostile toward God, designated in the Gospel by the general term world. Interestingly enough, both of the studied lexemes appear in John’s Gospel only on the lips of Jesus. Additionally, as it turns out, the Johannine concept of work covers a whole range of meanings: the activity of the Father and the Son (who give life and perform judgment), the salvific mission of the Son, Jesus’ teaching and his obedience to the Father’swill, miraculous healings, human deeds in general (both good or bad), disciples’ fulfillment of God’s will, meaning primarily their faith in Jesus as the Messiah and the Son of God. In a nutshell, the very essence of the work of the Father and the Son (and continued by Jesus’ disciples) can be encapsulated in the concept of salvation.

The first part of the article deals with four different understandings of Hosea 6:6 in the context of that entire book: (1) the repudiation of the cult as such; (2) the rejection of a particular notion of cult; (3) the priority of ethics over the cult; and (4) the symbiosis of cult and ethics, i.e. that an authentic cult interweaves ethical values and proper ritual conduct. The author concludes that the fourth interpretation best fits the message of the Book of Hosea. The second part of the article deals with the problem of the textual Vorlage which would have been used by Matthew. He seems to have quoted the Hebrew text in a way that remains faithful to his contemporary hermeneutical rule, according to which each element of a biblical parallelism was to be interpreted separately, based on the belief that every single line carried equal weight and conveyed a new truth or a new law. The Matthean rereading of Hosea 6:6, the focus of the third part, is presented from two perspectives: the synchronic and the diachronic. In the synchronic presentation, the main point of concern is the contribution of the quotes in 9:13 and 12:7 to the understanding of those Matthean pericopes. Finally, the diachronic reading deals with the Matthean use of Hosea 6:6 within the context of the Matthean community and its dialogue with the Rabbinic Judaism of that day.

The article surveys recent scholarship on the use of creation imagery in the Gospel of John, with the aim of presenting a rather exhaustive register of possible references. Both the obvious and the less clear-cut allusions to Gen 1–3 are discussed, the main focus being to accumulate and assess the evidence (for or against) all the apparent references to creation imagery. Included in this examination are several unconvincing and even far-fetched proposals advanced by some modern scholars, in order to give the fullest possible picture of the current discourse on these issues. After discussing the creation theme in the Prologue (1:1–18), the article explores the presence of creation imagery in the Book of Signs (1:19–12:50) and the Book of Glory (13:1–21:25).

Since antiquity, the three Johannine Letters have been read as the reflection of a crisis that had shaken the Christian communities connected with the author(s) of these epistles. Following this historical interpretation, and despite some recent endeavors to the contrary, 1 John is seen by the overwhelming majority of commentators as a polemic against false doctrine of certain secessionist elements (cf. 2:19); the author’s polemical arguments deal with several controversial points, both christological and ethical. From the study of extra-biblical sources describing early Christian heterodox movements, there has emerged no general agreement as to the identity of the author’s opponents; therefore, scholarly reconstructions of the historical context – the actual views held by these secessionists, derived solely from the texts of 1 and 2 John, have produced a number of different pictures, individually coherent yet ultimately divergent. In order to deal with the doctrinal crisis, the author of 1 John provides a set of criteria for discerning between true and false doctrine. Most importantly, however, he harks back to the principle of eyewitness testimony and upholds the key concept of the beginning as a normative rule in his community’s understanding of their tradition.

Artykuł wskazuje na najważniejsze aluzje i echa metafory oblubieńczej znajdujące się w J 12–20, dostarczając ich opisu, jak i krytycznej oceny. Namaszczenie Jezusa w Betanii (12,1-11) otwiera całą serię aluzji do symboliki małżeńskiej rozsianych w drugiej części Ewangelii Janowej, ukazującej historię Jezusowej męki, śmierci i zmartwychwstania. Janowe użycie metafory oblubieńczej pokazuje, iż śmierć Jezusa winna być interpretowana jako celebracja mesjańskiego ślubu.
The article traces all major allusions to and echoes of spousal metaphor in Jn 12–20, including both their description and critical evaluation. As it turns out, the episode of the anointing of Jesus in Bethany (12:1-11) opens a whole series of allusions to nuptial imagery found throughout the second part of John’s Gospel, which unfolds the story of Jesus’ passion, death, and resurrection. John’s use of the spousal metaphor reveals that Jesus’ death should be understood as the Messianic wedding.

Symbolika małżeńska obecna jest w całej Ewangelii Jana, ale zwłaszcza w pierwszych czterech rozdziałach oraz w jej drugiej części (rozdziały 12–20). Celem artykułu jest ukazanie i krytyczna ocena obecności metafory oblubieńczej w J 1,19–4,54. W tej części Ewangelii, Jezus jest wprost nazwany panem młodym (3,29). Jednocześnie perykopa za perykopą zdefiniowana jest obecność panny młodej. Jej pełna prezentacja następuje w czterech pierwszych rozdziałach Ewangelii. Jej ukazanie rozpoczyna się od matki Jezusa i jego uczniów w Kanie (rozdział 2), a następnie prowadzi do Żydów w Jerozolimie, Samarytan i ostatecznie pogan na końcu rozdziału 4. Poprzez swoją wiarę (1,50) Natanael, prawdziwy Izraelita, staje się prefiguracją wszystkich wierzących, oblubienicy Mesjasza.
Nuptial symbolism permeates the thought of the fourth evangelist throughout his work, but especially his first four chapters plus the entire second part of his gospel (12–20). The main focus of this article is to demonstrate and critically evaluate the presence of spousal metaphor in Jn 1:19–4:54. In this part of the Gospel, Jesus is explicitly presented as a bridegroom (3:29), while at the same time, in pericope after pericope, his bride becomes more and more visible and present. It takes four chapters to define the messianic bride in full. The whole presentation starts with the mother of Jesus and his disciples in Cana in Chapter 2, then continues with Jews in Jerusalem, the Samaritans, and finally pagans at the end of Chapter 4. By his faith (1:50), Nathanael, the Israelite, is the prefiguration of all believers, the bride of Messiah.

Opowiadanie o procesie Jezusa przed trybunałem Heroda Antypasa, zamieszczone w Ewangelii Łukaszowej 23,6-12, ma jedną główną funkcję, mianowicie ukazanie niewinności Jezusa. Wśród egzegetów spotyka się opinie, iż opowiadanie jest kompozycyjną fikcją, nieopartą na faktach, gdyż narracja ta nie wnosi niczego istotnego do Łukaszowego opisu męki i śmierci Jezusa, powtarzając jedynie występujące wcześniej motywy. Okazuje się jednak, iż opowiadanie, kładąc nacisk na znany już fakt niewinności Jezusa, posiada nowe elementy oraz odgrywa istotną rolę w ogólnym teologicznym przesłaniu Łukaszowego opisu męki Jezusa. Można zatem mówić o czterech funkcjach opowiadania, a właściwie funkcjach prezentacji niewinnego i milczącego Jezusa: historycznej (Jezus był niewinny, mimo że został postawiony przed sądem), chrystologicznej (milczenie Jezusa nawiązuje do proroctwa Iz 53,7 i wskazuje na jego tożsamość Cierpiącego Sługi Pańskiego; sąd nad Jezusem prowadzi do pojednania pomiędzy wrogami, Herodem i Piłatem, ukazując zbawienne skutki męki i śmierci Jezusa, co także wskazuje na Jego prawdziwą tożsamość, jako Zbawiciela i Dawcy Pokoju), pedagogicznej, czy inaczej parenetyczno-kerygmatycznej (prześladowany Jezus ukazany jest jako model do naśladowania dla prześladowanych chrześcijan) oraz apologetycznej (niewinność Jezusa potwierdzona jest przez dwa niezależne trybunały: żydowski i rzymski, co ma znaczenie w kontekście prześladowań pierwszych chrześcijan ze strony środowisk żydowskich i Cesarstwa).
