The author of this article demonstrates that Christmas, due to its multidimen-sional character, can be the basis for cross-curricular work of foreign language learners. By analyzing examples of cross-curricular activities suggested by university students who specialize in pedagogy and language, he argues that Christmas can be an adequate topic for the introduction of cross-curricular content in a foreign language class and for the development of different learners’ skills both at the primary and secondary levels. On the basis of the material collected from university students, he draws a conclusion that information from various school subjects can be integrated around Christmas within the monodisciplinary model which has been suggested in scholarly literature and which is discussed together with other models in the theoretical part of this article.

Opis:
The following article primarily deals with the notion of lexical borrowing. It particularly emphasizes the process of adopting English loanwords by Polish teenagers who in this way reflect their views, beliefs and feelings as well as accentuate their sense of belonging and their presence in the society. Apart from encapsulating opinions and observations of scholars on this subject, the article provides an extensive amount of empirical data which comes from the survey conducted among young Poles in March 2007. This data is presented by the author with the aim of issuing a list of English loanwords commonly adopted by Polish teenagers for whom these words function as an important part of their daily communication. The use of these items is exemplified in the article by various sentences which were quoted by teenagers participating in the research. The sentences in fact illustrate how foreign units are incorporated to the Polish system and in what social contexts they are applied by the youth. An analysis of the data is also carried out here to assist the author in classifying English loanwords into certain semantic fields and in distinguishing and comparing the codes developed by boys and girls at the gymnasium and secondary school level. The article in the final part enumerates the reasons for adopting English words teenagers and discusses the most influential channels by means of which the transmission of lexical borrowings takes place.

The issues presented in the article concern English loanwords and their role in the process of shaping a specific variety of the language which is characteristic of the subculture of Polish graffiti writers. The article describes various forms, styles and techniques by means of which young people signal their presence and express their thoughts and feelings. The paper is, first of all, an analysis of the linguistic component and an attempt of classifying English lexical units which are borrowed and most frequently used in the conversations of Polish graffiti writers. This study also concentrates on the categorization of the linguistic content which is adopted from the English language to various forms of Polish graffiti writings. The article presents the results of the survey which was conducted at the turn of April and May 2006. The obtained results suggest the widespread use of English words in the daily talk of Polish graffiti writers, the evidence of which comes from the quoted expressions and utterances that are applied by artists in their environment and their description of the so called "crime work". The article in the final part also enumerates the main factors which are believed to have a significant impact on such frequent use of English words among Polish graffiti writers.

The article deals with the issue of mirroring stereotypes through language which is presented in this material as an important tool of reflecting opinions, beliefs and judgements about ethnic others. The paper discusses different linguistic means which help to express cultural stereotypes commonly held in societies. On the basis of the opinions, comments and observations of different scholars, the author of the article distinguishes items which are essential for linguistic reproduction of cultural (mental) stereotypes. In his account he demonstrates how closely stereotypes are linked with the linguistic signs in use. Although the paper examines the notion of stereotyping from a linguistic perspective, it also refers to the assumptions of the cognitive and cultural approaches to stereotyping.

Opis:
The authors of this article concentrate on the use and role of fairy tales in foreign language teaching to primary school children. They discuss these notions on the basis of scholarly literature and questionnaire responses of 2nd- and 3rd-year students of pedagogy and language studies at Wielkopolska University of Social and Economic Studies in Środa Wielkopolska. Apart from pointing to the necessity of introducing fairy tales in education, particularly foreign language education, they identify and describe in their account a number of tools which can be helpful for the presentation and discussion of content from fairy tales in a foreign language class at the primary school level. They also enumerate a number of effects which children’s work with fairy tales brings and in the end they draw conclusions with regard to the subject in question.

The main aim of this paper is to discuss the notion of language viewed as a tool of communication of purchasers and vendors in a Polish bazaar. On the basis of scholarly literature and the material gathered in the conducted study the authors of this article emphasize an important role which language plays in the discourse of these two groups of people and identify a set of functions which language performs in exchanging information between them. It demonstrates how socio-economic reality is related to and reflected by means of language and how language as a tool helps members of the bazaar community (both sellers and buyers) to communicate messages and build relationships with each other. In order to exemplify how language is used in this particular social context, they provide evidence in the form of citations and eventually draw conclusions with regard to the subject in question.

This exploratory study reports on the results of a survey on the tertiary language lecturers’ preferences regarding the access of EFL listening materials by Internet resources. A total of 80 EFL lecturers participated in the study. The data were gathered using an online survey that included short-answer questions. Moreover, semi-structured individual interviews were conducted with 10 participants. The study demonstrated that the participants used the Internet mainly for preparing extra materials for their learners so that they could also practice listening outside the classroom. The materials selected were mainly educational videos on a variety of topics, which were spoken by EFL speakers representing different native languages. The participants used these materials outside the class to support their autonomous L2 learning.

Non-typical letter activities and their effectiveness in foreign language lessons – EFL secondary school students’ perceptions The main aim of this article is to verify the effectiveness of non-typical lesson activities, involving the completion of a letter, in classroom conditions; and in implementing modern approaches to foreign language learning and teaching. Apart from presenting theoretical information on the notion of a letter and the concept of effectiveness in language education, the following account also provides insight into letter-based practical activities and identifies some consequences of their application in EFL classes. It delineates the opinions of secondary school students who, in an anonymous questionnaire, expressed their views on the letter activities offered to them in their lessons. Their opinions provide evidence in support of the content and concepts distinguished and discussed in the theoretical part of this paper.

Opis:
Scholars all over the world have been arguing for foreign language instruction which combines linguistic and cultural content. Eliminating the cultural side results in a deficient process. This study explored prospective teachers’ perceptions of both constituents, since they will ultimately be responsible for their implementation in the foreign language classroom. To this end, 137 students from three European universities were chosen and asked to fill out an online questionnaire with Likert scale items. Data was collected and interpreted using the free statistics software package R (R Core Team, 2019). The findings confirmed that the relevance of linguistic / cultural issues was unanimously acknowledged (98,5%), speaking was appointed as the most desired target skill (97,1%), interpersonal relations (88,3%) as the most important aspect of socio-cultural knowledge, and lessons with native speakers (94,2%) as the most relevant classroom resource

Rozważamy model wzrostu gospodarczego w postaci autonomicznego układu dynamicznego. Pokazujemy metodę wyznaczania trajektorii w otoczeniu długookresowej równowagi w wybranych neoklasycznych modelach egzogenicznego wzrostu gospodarczego. W ogólności ta metoda ma przede wszystkim zastosowanie do modeli, które nie posiadają jawnych rozwiązań. Proponujemy ogólną metodę znajdowania rozwiązań dowolnie wymiarowego układu dynamicznego reprezentującego model wzrostu gospodarczego w postaci szeregu potęgowego. W tym celu rozwijamy funkcję stanu w szereg potęgowy Taylora w otoczeniu stanu początkowego. Współczynniki tego rozwinięcia reprezentują parametry zmienności wielkości stanu układu takie jak tempo wzrostu, przyśpieszenie, zryw, itd. Są one liczone algebraicznie (Mathematica) z postaci wyjściowego układu dynamicznego. W pracy podajemy metodę znajdowania rozwiązań dla układów jednowymiarowych i dwuwymiarowych. Jako przykłady rozważamy modele Solowa-Swana i Mankiwa-Romera-Weila. W pracy stosujemy metodę aproksymant Padégo dla uzyskania lepszej zbieżności szeregu potęgowego. Dzięki przedstawionej metodzie uzyskano rozwiązania w postaci szeregu dla trajektorii w otoczeniu długookresowej równowagi dwóch modeli egzogenicznego wzrostu gospodarczego. Pokazano, że uzyskane rozwiązania dobrze aproksymują ścieżki czasowe, po których osiągana jest długookresowa równowaga. Wskazano również możliwość estymacji parametrów modelu wzrostu gospodarczego, dla którego uzyskano rozwiązania w postaci szeregu.
We consider economic growth models in the form of dynamical systems. We show a method of determining trajectories in a neighbourhood of a long-run equilibrium in some neoclassical models of exogenous economic growth. This method is applied primarily to these models which in general have no analytical solution. We propose the general method of finding solutions of arbitrarily dimensional dynamical system in the form of power series. We expand the state function in Taylor's series in the neighbourhood of the initial state. The coefficients of expansion represent the parameters of the variation of the state of the system and are calculated algebraically in Mathematica. We present the method of finding solutions for the Solow-Swan model and the Mankiw-Romer-Weil model. We use also the Padé aproximant method to obtain a better convergence of the power series. This method allows to obtain a solution in the form of a series for trajectories in a neighbourhood of a long-run equilibrium in two models of exogenous economic growth. We show that obtained solutions are a good approximation of time paths, along which the long-run equilibrium is reached. We show a possibility of estimation of model parameters for which solutions in the form of series are known.

W pracy charakteryzujemy swoistość, tj. wyjątkowość kosmologii współczesnej rozumianej jako fizyka Wszechświata. Swoistość ta przejawia się w stosunku do samego przedmiotu badań oraz w stosunku do sposobów zdobywania wiedzy o Wszechświecie, w tym także metod stosowanych do rozwiązywania problemów. Twierdzimy, że kosmologia jest odmienna od standardowej praktyki badawczej fizyki współczesnej (odmienność metodologiczna). Odmienność przedmiotowometodologiczna współczesnej kosmologii jest źródłem kontrowersyjności kosmologii (twierdzi tak Helge Kragh (1996)). W pracy wskazujemy brak uzasadnienia takiej jej oceny. Odmienność przedmiotowo-metodologiczna kosmologii nie jest dla nas kontrowersyjna. Identyfikujemy tę odmienność między innymi ze swoistością predykcji (asymetria między retrognozą a prognozą), temporalnością kosmologii związanej z rozwojem technik obserwacyjnych, problemem horyzontu oraz specyfiką problemu warunków początkowych. Wskazujemy na niedookreśloność modelu czasoprzestrzennego w kosmologii w dwóch aspektach: a) problemu warunków początkowych dla ewolucji Wszechświata oraz b) problemu topologicznej niedookreśloności modelu geometrycznego czasoprzestrzeni.
We discuss the specificity of modern cosmology understood as the physics of the Universe. We can treat cosmology as specific because of its object, i.e. the physical Universe is specific, as well as the ways of acquiring the knowledge about the Universe are specific. We argue that the specific and, in some sense, unique methodological nature of modern cosmology compared to physics is not controversial, as it is claimed among others by Helge Kragh. In our view this specificity is natural of cosmology itself and has its foundations in: 1) the asymmetry of prediction (which favors retrognosis), 2) the temporal nature of observations applied in cosmological investigations, 3) the horizon problem and the relevance of initial conditions for cosmological evolution.

Patrząc na korzenie współczesnej kosmologii odnajdujemy dwie ważne okoliczności: przejście z kosmologii na podstawie koncepcji czasoprzestrzeni newtonowskiej do kosmologii relatywistycznej i akceptacji idei dynamicznego relatywistycznego wszechświata. Uważamy, że podczas gdy pierwsza jest rewolucją naukową w sensie Kuhna, druga nie ma takiego charakteru. Powodem jest to, że przejście od statycznego Wszechświata Einsteina do Friedmanna dynamicznego Wszechświata odbywa się na fundamentach stworzonych przez ogólną teorię względności. Teoretyczna możliwość dynamicznego wszechświata jest naturalną konsekwencją ogólnej koncepcji względności krzywizny czasoprzestrzeni, ale nie została uznana od samego początku, gdyż Einstein był przekonany, że Wszechświat jest statyczny i nie istnieje rozwiązanie, zgodne z rozszerzającym się wszechświatem. Looking at the roots of modern cosmology we find two important circumstances: the transition from cosmology based on the Newtonian concept of space-time to relativistic cosmology and the acceptance of the idea of dynamical relativistic Universe. We argue that while the former is a scientific revolution in the Kuhn’s sense, the latter has no such a character. The reason is that the transition from Einstein’s static to Friedmann’s dynamic Universe takes place on foundations set up by general relativity theory. The theoretical possibility of dynamic Universe is a natural consequence of general relativity concept of curvature space-time, but it was not recognized from the very beginning, when Einstein was convinced that the Universe is static and did not admit the solutions of expanding Universe. We argue that Fleck’s conception of thought style is more adequate to reconstruct the very complicated process of the dynamical relativistic picture of the Universe (‘Weltbilt’) formation.
