One of the great authorities in the antiquity who wrote about old age was Marcus Tullius Cicero, the author of „Cato Maior De senectute [Cato the Elder on Old Age]”. The famous orator wrote this work in 44 BCE and dedicated it to his friend Atticus. The author himself was almost 62 years old at that time, and Atticus 65. Cicero wrote the work in a dialogue form, setting the action in 150 BCE, the speakers being Marcus Porcius Cato the Elder, who in this case presented the views of Cicero, Publius Cornelius Scipio the Younger and Gaius Laelius Sapiens. Cicero followed the example of a Greek treatise on old age, probably written by a third-century BCE Peripatetic philosopher, Aristo of Ceos. The concept of the presentation of the treatise is based on comparison of two different views on old age. In one, sorrow and anxiety are visible. Through Cato’s words, Cicero names four reasons why people regard old age as an unhappy period of life: a). it moves us away from active life; b). it weakens physical strength, c). it deprives us of all sensual pleasures, d). it is close to death. The other view, represented by Cato, disproves the objections against old age, recommending calmness, activity, and moderation. Interestingly enough, apart from philosophical or medical arguments, Cicero also refers to political, religious, social and cultural aspects. The apologia for old age presented by Cicero was not always reflected in the reality. Roman sources, especially legal documents, inform about attempted suicide or euthanasia by the elderly. The fundamental reason was the condition of health and physical pain as well as mental illnesses, but the direct motive associated with old age was taedium vitae – weariness of life.

Religion played a very important role in the public life of ancient Rome. One of the most peculiar rites which combined a religious aspect with the policy of the Roman state were the supplicationes. They were organised mostly for three reasons: a) to propitiate the gods and to avert their anger, whose results included military failures, epidemics, the action of the elements (this function was also performed by prodigia); b) for precatory reasons; c) in order to render thanks, for example after the achievement of a military victory or after important political events. The supplicationes were public in nature; they consisted of prayers to the gods combined with a procession, making an offering and religious feasts. These rites attracted many Romans, and frequently invoked strong emotional reactions in them. In the period of the decline of the Roman Republic the most important supplicationes, as far as the duration (number of days) and their nature was concerned, were the ones decreed by the senate in order to celebrate Caesar’s victories. Supplicationes were decreed in 57, 55 and 52 BC in honour of Caesar and to celebrate his military achievements. A peculiar feature of the rites organised in 55 BC was their prolongation to last 20 days. The supplicationes which were decreed during the civil war were even longer: after the battle of Thapsus (40 days) and after the battle of Munda (50 days). The supplicationes which were decreed on 1 September 44 BC were extraordinary in nature, for they were organised not for the sake of the gods but for the sake of Caesar. We may surmise from the fragments of Cicero’s first philippic that these were rites in which prayers were directed not to gods but directly to Caesar. This meant that the senate recognised his divinity since it consented to prayers and rituals being directed to him without an intermediary party.

Artykuł poświęcony jest oskarżeniom G. Juliusza Cezara o impietas. Zarzuty kierowane pod adresem dyktatora obejmowały: niewiarę w życie pozagrobowe i karę po śmierci, naruszenie sacrosanctitas trybunów ludowych, znieważenie świątyni Jowisza na Kapitolu, w której umieszczono posąg wodza w kwadrydze, oraz świątyni Kwirynusa, gdzie złożono portret Cezara z napisem „bogu niezwyciężonemu” (Deo invicto), a także violatio luci (wycięcie świętego gaju w okolicy Marsylii), działania contra auspicia w 59 roku p.n.e., wywołanie wojny domowej, uznawanej za bellum impium, oraz impietas pośmiertne (Parentalia i supplicationes ku czci Cezara).
The declining years of the Republic brought many transformations and the development of new political, social and religious ideologies. Gaius Julius Caesar was indisputably one of the greatest religious “innovators” in this period. In this context, accusations of impietas against Caesar, leveled by his adversaries, are characteristic. They can be divided into several categories:—— negation of the existence of the gods: this accusation concerned Caesar’s statement during the Catilinarian trials that death brought rest rather than agony; that beyond death there was no more worry or joy. Marcus Porcius Cato accused Caesar of the lack of belief in the afterlife and in punishment after death;—— violations of the sacrosanctitas of the tribunes of the people Epidius Marullus and Caesetius Flavus, whom Caesar deprived of power;—— profanatio templi, connected with the placing of the statute of the commander (Caesar) in the quadriga on the Capitoline Hill, with the globe at Caesar’s feet, and a picture bearing the inscription “To Invincible God” (Deo invicto), which was put in the Quirinus temple;—— violatio luci: Caesar was accused of cutting down the “holy grove” near Marseille;—— contra auspicia: Caesar was accused of ignoring the observation of the sky in 59 BCE and obnuntiatio of Bibulus;—— bella impia: the main charge was that of triggering the civil war, which was explicitly called: bellum impium, scelerum, nefandum, and, furthermore, supplicationes, ovatio and triumphus were not allowed for victories;—— posthumous impietas: Caesar was commemorated by special Parentalia and supplicationes, which Cicero regarded as “inexpiabiles religiones”.

The paper analyses the situation of disabled students in Polish public schools. The author stresses the necessity of providing disabled students with high quality education. Opis:
Quantitative descriptive analysis, consumer acceptability as well as physicochemical characteristics were employed to analyse the effect of ground chia seeds on the texture and quality of wheat bread. Chia seed oil changes and its impact on selected characteristics were determined. The share of chia seeds did not contribute to bread quality deterioration. The addition of 7.5% chia seeds significantly reduced consumer acceptance as well as contributed to the development of undesirable features in the sensory profile, including fatty, rancid, and off-flavour. The share of chia seeds in an amount not exceeding 5% did not deteriorate the overall quality of bread. The composition of fatty acids of bread with chia seeds, especially with their 5 and 7.5% addition, could be valuable from the nutritional point of view. The fatty acid profile of bread with 5 and 7.5% chia seeds was characterised by over 50% higher polyunsaturated fatty acids to saturated fatty acids ratio compared to wheat bread. The n-6/n-3 ratio in the fatty acid profile of wheat bread was 18.77, while in the fatty acid profile of chia seed bread it ranged from 1.42 to 0.67. Oil extracted from bread exhibited better quality features as compared to oil extracted from chia seeds and subjected to the oxidative stability test.

Istniejące odmiany służą głównie dla pozyskiwania włókna wykorzystywanego na potrzeby przemysłu włókienniczego lub na cele pozawłókiennicze (przemysł motoryzacyjny, budowlany, kompozytowy itp.).
In 2002, the director of the Institute of Natural Fibers in Poznań commissioned the development of a new variety of hemp, better yielding than currently cultivated, for the needs of the pulp, paper and energy industries. The existing varieties are mainly used to obtain fiber used for the needs of the textile industry or for non-textile purposes (automotive, construction, composite industry, etc.).
