Opis:
In 2014 we finished research works involved in the development of a technology for manufacturing innovative ceramic-carbon foam filters for molten metal alloys filtration, which were financed by the National Centre for Research and Development (NCBiR) from INNOTECH programme resources. A batch of the filters produced in this technology was tested in practice in domestic cast steel and cast iron foundries. The trials were successful and foundries declared their intention to purchase the newly-developed filters for the current production of casts. This provided an incentive for “Ferro-Term” Sp. z o.o. to start design works on the prototype line for a serial production of these filters. At the same time, in co-operation with a scientific consortium, including the co-authors of the technology, i.e. the Institute of Ceramics and Building Materials, Refractory Materials Division in Gliwice, Institute for the Chemical Processing of Coal in Zabrze and Foundry Research Institute in Cracow, the company made a successful attempt to raise some funds for the necessary adaptation of the developed technology from the semi-technical to industrial scale from Intelligent Development Operational Programme. In the article we have presented information on the effects of works performed within the framework of the project entitled “Modernization and adaptation of the existing technological line for purposes related to technology verification and start-up of the production of innovative ceramic-carbon filters for molten metal alloy filtration”.

Ce/Fe multilayer (ML) with constant Fe (2 nm) and Ce (4.5 nm) sublayer thicknesses was prepared onto naturally oxidised Si(100) substrate using magnetron sputtering. Chemical purity of the sublayers was revealed in-situ by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements. The structure of the sample was studied by standard low- and high-angle X-ray diffraction (XRD). Surface morphology of the ML was examined by atomic force microscopy. Magnetic properties of the sample was studied in the temperature range between 5 and 350 K using a vibrating sample magnetometer in a magnetic field up to 9 T. The hysteresis loops were measured in field perpendicular and parallel to the substrate. Furthermore, hydrogen absorption at a pressure of about 1000 mbar was studied at room temperature (RT) in Pd covered ML using four-point resistivity measurements. The solid state amorphisation reaction have been confirmed by XRD and magnetic measurements of the Ce/Fe ML. The absence of satellite peaks in the low - angle XRD pattern revealed no artificial layered structure. The above results show that interdiffusion of cerium and iron atoms is extremely fast at RT.

Opis:
The Białowieża Forest (BF) is in many respects an exceptional object, of a great importance for nature protection and forest management, at the international scale. The BF plays also a key role from the point of view of regional development and welfare of local community. In the last period, a big threat for multiple values of the BF has arisen, as a result of enormous bark beetle infestation, which started in 2012 and has killed 1.4 million m3 of spruce trees. In the paper, first, a brief overview of the general history of the BF and an account of long−term human impacts on its functioning and structure is provided. Next, the history of bark beetle infestations in the BF is analysed. It is shown that, in the period 1992−2007, the average volume of spruces killed by bark beetle amounted on average to 20,000 m3 of wood annually. During that period practically all dead trees were removed from the forest by means of salvation cuttings. Starting from 2008, more and more trees infested by European spruce bark beetle were left in the forest, in a result of a pressure exerted by environmental groups. In 2012, Minister of Environment decided to reduce the allowable cut, determined in forest management plans elaborated for the managed part of the BF, from 107,000 to 48,500 m3/year. This decision, along with several other regulations and restrictions, made in practice impossible to stop the development of a current bark beetle infestation, which started in 2011 and intensified during the next 6 years (solely in 2016 bark beetles killed 480,000 m3 of spruce trees). In the paper, the most important implications and consequences of the current situation are briefly summarized and discussed. A special attention is given to the problems concerning: 1) protection of Natura 2000 species and sites (endangered by bark beetle outbreak), 2) a negative influence of large amounts of spruce deadwood on forest soils, 3) threats caused by pathogenic fungi, 4) question of public safety, 5) fire hazard, and 6) economical dimension. The legal and socio−economical foundations of the functioning of Hajnówka, Browsk and Białowieża forest districts comprising the managed part of the BF, as well as their most important environmental and social consequences are discussed too. Among others, it is indicated that, under current conditions of the BF, human intervention plays a key role in maintaining stable and compositionally diverse woodland communities. Finally, several suggestions and recommendations are provided, aimed at, in the short term, breaking off the current bark beetle outbreak, and, in the long term, at maintaining a multifunctional character of the BF and its ability to provide all important ecosystem services on a sustainable basis.

Opis:
Rozwój materiałów w oceanotechnice otwiera nowe możliwości w budowie jachtów. Poniższy artykuł porusza kwestie wplatania nowoczesnych lin typu HMPE (ang. high-modulus polyethylene) w konstrukcje takielunku jachtu, a dokładniej w część olinowania ruchomego.
The development of materials in ocean engineering opens new possibilities in the field of yachts construction. The following article discusses the issue of placing modern high-modulus polyethylene (HMPE) ropes in the construction of the rigging of the yacht, and more specifically in the part of running rigging. Thanks to the special no cover construction of the 12 strands rope, created by their interlacing, it is possible to construct small load-bearing elements such as loops, slings or soft shackles in just a few minutes. The purpose of my work is to check the carrying capacity of individual plaiting techniques in a static tensile test. Three groups of spliced elements were tested, their results were compared in terms of strength and statistics. After analyzing the results, the most reliable techniques for making knots and splices on a rope manufactured by Lancelin, the PURE DYNEEMA Racing Braid model with a diameter of 5 mm, were determined.

A method for creating linearly polarized positrons and ortho-positronium (o-Ps) atoms with the J-PET detector is presented. The unique geometry and properties of the J-PET tomography enable one to design a positron source such that the quantization axis for the estimation of the linear polarization of produced o-Ps can be determined on the event by event basis in a direction of the positron motion. We intend to use ²²Na or other β⁺ decay isotopes as a source of polarized positrons. Due to the parity violation in the beta decay, the emitted positrons are longitudinally polarized. The choice of the quantization axis is based on the known position of the positron emitter and the reconstructed position of the positronium annihilation. We show that the J-PET tomography is equipped with all needed components.

Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy has shown to be a powerful tool to study the nanostructures of porous materials. Positron emission tomograph is a device allowing imaging of metabolic processes e.g. in human bodies. A newly developed device, the Jagiellonian PET will allow positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy in addition to imaging, thus combining both analyses providing new methods for physics and medicine. In this contribution we present a computer program that is compatible with the Jagiellonian PET software. We compare its performance with the standard program LT 9.0 by using positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy data from hexane measurements at different temperatures. Our program is based on an iterative procedure, and our fits prove that it performs as good as LT 9.0.

The results of examinations of microstructure and an analysis of its impact on selected mechanical properties of austempered ductile iron (ADI) were presented in the paper. The ADI was produced from the ductile iron containing 1.56% Ni only alloying addition. The effect of the austempering time and temperature on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the examined cast iron was considered. Constant conditions of austenitizing were assumed and six variants of the austempering treatment were adopted. The studyof mechanical properties included a static tensile test, Charpy impact strength test and Brinellhardness measurement. This work complements the knowledge about alloying additions effect on microstructure and mechanical properties of ADI and focuses on the impact of a single alloying element (Ni).

Opis:
The work concerned the ascomycetous fungus Eutypella parasitica, which for several decades has been present in North America, where it attacks various species of maple. In 2005, for the first time it was recorded in Europe, in Slovenia. Later on it was found in Austria, Croatia, Germany, Hungary and the Czech Republic. In 2016 for the first time the species was reported in Poland, in the Polish−Czech border region. The work includes fieldwork and laboratory research on disease symptoms and the causal pathogen. The research was conducted in August 2016 in the Ustroń Forest District. In 16 randomly selected stands, the health of Acer spp. trunks was analyzed, especially in terms of Eutypella parasitica infection. Of the 16 trees, where extensive necrosis and cankers were found, the material was collected for laboratory analyses. In the laboratory, the fruit bodies of fungi on necrotic lesions were examined and the fungi isolates were performed on 2% malt−agar extract. Identification of representative E. parasitica isolates was confirmed based on the ITS rDNA sequence. Within the 16 stands, where the maples were analyzed, individuals with symptoms of trunk infestation by E. parasitica were found in 8 stands. Based on in situ produced fruiting bodies and isolated cultures, the presence of E. parasitica was finally confirmed on 14 trunks, including 13 Acer pseudoplatanus trunks and one A. campestre. All cankers were located in the butt section of the trunk, below 3 meters, reaching from 21 to 252 cm in length. Fungal fruit bodies were present within the necrotic lesions. Morphological characteristics of asci, ascospores and colonies isolated on malt−agar extract are given. The phytosanitary risk for Acer pseudoplatanus and other maples is also discussed. Moreover the preliminary actions that should be taken by the foresters are indicated.

Opis:
The positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy was applied to the samples of the human uterine leiomyomas and the normal myometrium tissues taken from the selected place of the uterus during a surgery. The method indicated differences in values of the measured positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy parameters (lifetimes and intensities) between healthy and diseased tissue samples. The additional measurements were performed either in darkness or in presence of visible light which influenced the free radicals present in both kind of tissues and, as a result, made changes in free annihilation and o-Ps decay lifetime and intensity values.
