Opis:
The experimental area is located in the Wêgorzyno Forest Sub-District, £obez Forest District. 29 Polish provenances of beech from their natural range were growth in a completely randomized block design with four replications. In 2010, after the end of the growing season, measurements were carried out on the experimental plot, including: determination of the survival rate and the diameter at breast height, and height of trees. Moreover, the total basal area and the total volume were calculated. Using ANOVA, statistically significant differences between provenances were apparent for four of the five traits measured; all except diameter at breast height. Provenances characterized by high values for the analyzed traits were considered the best adapted to the habitat conditions in the experimental plot, while provenances reaching low values were considered unsuitable for use under the conditions similar to those at the trial site location.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to compare growth and survival of plug and bare−root seedlings planted at different dates. The experiment was established in 2003 in the Oleśnica Forest District (south−western Poland). Seedlings were planted at four dates: the end of August, September and October 2003 and the beginning of April 2004. The two−factorial experiment comprised eight treatments. It was established in the randomized complete block design in five replications. In each plot a total of 390 seedlings were planted. The objects were measured in the years 2004−2008 and 2013. At first height of all trees was measured using a scaled rod. In 2013 diameter at breast height was measured on all trees and height was measured for some randomly selected individuals. The ANOVA was supplemented with with Tukey's multiple comparison test. The height and diameter distributions in analysed variants were compared with Kolmogorov−Smirnov test. Treatments were found rather not to vary in terms of their survival rates (fig. 1). No variation was found for mean diameters at breast height (tab. 1). The difference between the treatment with the maximum (August planting, bare−root seedlings) and minimum (April planting, bare−root seedlings) tree height equaled 69 cm. No significant differences were recorded between mean heights of trees planted in August, September and October regarding the planting material type. Variation in basal area results both from survival rates and diameter at breast height. Only spring planting of bare−root seedlings was found significantly different from all other variants (tab. 1). Differences in height between the control and the mean for the experiment increased continuously (fig. 4). Scots pine seedlings may be successfully planted in late summer and autumn. Under relatively advantageous conditions, particularly moisture levels, 1 year old bare−root pine seedlings are not inferior to plug seedlings. Plug seedlings tolerate soil drought conditions better than bare−root seedlings. The effect of stress connected with drought after planting, measured by mean height, rather than disappearing, is continuously increasing with age.

Opis:
The study objective was to verify the hypothesis on ecotypic variation in beech and ineffectiveness of transferring its reproductive material over larger distances. Beech nuts were collected in the autumn of 1990. Experimental sites were established in the Baligród and Oleszyce forest districts (SE Poland). On single plots of 18.00×13.75 m (247.5 m2), a total of 110 three−years−old seedlings were planted in a 1.50×1.25 m spacing in autumn 1993. Single row of mountain ash was left between the plots. In the period of 1994−2016 a series of analyses was conducted concerning adaptation, growth, phenological and qualitative traits. Height was measured on all trees using a measuring stick, except for the year 2016, when hypsometer was used to measure approximately 20 heights and remaining ones were determined based on the height curve. Results were analysed using univariate analysis of variance based on the random model, followed by Duncan’s multiple range test for each experimental site and year of the study. For 2016 ordering of populations in each of the experimental sites was compared using Spearman’s rank correlation test. In terms of survival rates in Oleszyce site the local provenance from Oleszyce proved to be superior. In all the years of the measurements it was characterised by the highest survival rate. In this respect the Komańcza and Lutowiska provenances from the Bieszczady Mountains turned out to be the worst ones. In the experimental site in Baligród, the Barlinek and Połczyn provenances outranked the others in terms of their survival rates, while in 2016 it was the population from Komańcza. Tree height effects in Oleszyce site showed that the local population from Oleszyce grows best, while the Pomeranian population from Jamy was also exceptional. The Bieszczady populations (Komańcza and Lutowiska) are characterised by the worst growth traits. In the experimental site in Baligród, the local Baligród population is characterised by poorest growth, similarly to the other ones from the Bieszczady. In terms of growth, the Western Pomeranian population from Gryfino is exceptional. As far as all the evaluated traits are concerned the investigated populations exhibit considerable variability, as no geographic ordination could be found. It was confirmed that imported populations, even from long distances, may exceed local populations in terms of their adaptation traits and growth rates.

Opis:
The study assesses the effect of applied cuttings on the transformation of the species composition, structure and development of the forest towards selection forest type. The described control unit was established in 2000 in the Krucze Mts. (southern Poland) within the programme of silver fir restoration in the Sudety Mts. The working hypothesis was based on the advantageous effect of the selection management system on fir trees. 46 permanent circular sample plots of 0.05 ha each were established and diameter at breast height measured on all trees along with height of 2−3 trees growing closest to the plot center. Measurements were repeated in 2004 and 2013. The greatest share in the growth increment was recorded for the most numerous species (spruce and fir). Only spruce and beech were important in the group of young trees (recruitment), which did not include fir or larch. The timber resources increased from 339 in 2000 to 381 m³/ha in 2013, which indicates that not whole current increment was harvested. The increase in the growing stock follows the reduction in the number of trees per hectare from 361 to 317. Thus the number of young trees did not compensate for the losses. As a result the investigated unit is not in the state of equilibrium and in the future more work and care should be devoted to the regeneration. Fir turned out to be a species with the greatest production potential. In the first period growing stock of this species amounted to 17%, while the increment was over 26%. In the latter the increment reached 34%. The most important objective of the selection cuttings in this concrete unit should be to tend for regeneration and trees at low diameter sub−classes at the expense of use of trees with target values of diameters at breast height and disturbing the selection cutting structure. It is advisable to increase the share of fir in the structure of analysed unit.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to evaluate the practical feasibility of two forest regeneration methods using Scots pine Pinus sylvestris L. To this end, comparative experiments were established in the Złotoryja and Legnica Forest Districts. The site in Złotoryja had been clear cut, while the experimental plot in Legnica was established at a location damaged by wind in 2009 and cleared from wind throws and wind-broken trees before the experiment. Four different dates for sowing and two for planting were chosen in order to investigate the potential forest regeneration with respect to time. Both experiments were established according to the same design: a complete random block design with five replication blocks. To each plot we applied approximately 53 g (1.2 kg/ha) of seeds and planted 230 seedlings (10 200 seedlings/ha). In 2017, the height of the pine trees was recorded and their increment in height was measured in 2016 as well as 2017. A preliminary analysis of results was conducted using ANOVA for multiple experiments in order to identify significant differences and to then combine variables to form homogeneous groups to which the Duncan multiple range test could be applied. For growth traits, the ANOVA showed significant differences between experimental sights as well as a significant interaction of factors with the experimental site. In terms of planting, April was the most advantageous resulting in the greatest tree height in both forest districts, while in the Legnica Forest District the saplings planted in April also showed the greatest annual increments. Among the sowing dates, the most advantageous was the winter sowing, while the April sowing date produced the least desirable results. In conclusion, both sowing and planting are effective methods to establish pine cultures in coniferous forest. Furthermore, both methods may be performed at the currently recommended spring date, but they may also be postponed to summer and winter dates provided favorable weather conditions prevail.

Opis:
The experiment area was located in the territory of the Góra Śląska Forest District (western Poland). The plantation was established in 2000 on former agricultural land. One− and two−year−old Scots pine seedlings were used in the experiment. The planting methods applied included wedge planting with a traditional forest and Huff’s dibblers, a garden planting spade, a ‘Junack’ spade and three types of planting machines. Measurements were taken in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2008. Differences in the growth characteristics of plantations and young stands are not only statistically significant, but also of great practical importance. The operation of planting machines was significantly more effective, which was manifested in a higher survival rate, height growth, and larger breast height diameters and total basal area. Huff’s dibbler fell short of expectations as a hand tool.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to compare the growth of plantations established with manual and mechanical methods using planting material of various age. The experiment was established in 2000, in the Góra Śląska Forest District (W Poland) on a former farmland. One− and two−years−old Scots pine seedlings were used. Applied planting methods included: conventional planting bar, German Huff's dibble, trowel, Junack spade and three types of planting machines. The complete random block design with five replications was adopted. For the requirements of machine operation, unit plots were elongated rectangles with the longer side of 100 m and the shorter side of 4.5 m. Each plot consisted of three trenches. Spacing between seedlings in the trench was selected to ensure 10,000 seedlings/ha density. Measurements were carried out in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2008 and 2015. In the first five dates all heights were measured and seedling survival rates were established based on the number of measurements. In 2008 and 2015 all diameters at breast height were measured. In 2015 height of sample trees was recorded, while the height of the other trees was calculated according to the Prodan model h=d2/(a+bd+cd2)+1.3. Based on the measured diameters at breast height and established heights, basal area at the breast height and total tree volume were calculated for each plot. Survival rate is the primary parameter in the evaluation of planting methods, as it most effectively differentiates treatments. Stand height showed no significant diversification with regard to the treatments. For mean diameters at breast height the only differences were found between two−year old and one−year old seedlings, irrespective of the planting method. Despite the lack of differences in growth, effects of various planting methods and different planting material remain and as a result of high class timber already found in the stand these effects have become economically important. The decision on the selection of a particular planting material type and planting method has extensive economic consequences, as it affects productivity of grown stands at least at the first thinning operations. Planting machines are good tools in the establishment of forest cultures and the quality of their work exceeds that of manual operations.

Opis:
Provenance trials with forest trees provide valuable information about growth and adaptability of populations often transferred over large geographical and climatic distances. In this study we evaluated growth and survival of 19 Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) populations representing most of the natural range of the species in Europe, growing in a 30-year-old provenance trial in the northeastern Poland. We used cluster analysis to investigate differentiation among those populations in growth and survival. We also used published data on needle morphology and allozyme and DNA marker variation for those same populations to compare groupings of populations based on growth and needle traits and markers. We found significant variation among tested populations in all investigated traits – the largest variation was found for stand volume which integrates information on growth and survival. Variation in growth traits was related to the latitude of population origin with populations from the latitudinal band between 49° N and 54° N showing the best performance. Populations originating from both north and south off of that region showed lower productivity, which for southern provenances resulted from their particularly low survival, reflecting the lack of adaptation to the environment of the research site. Grouping of populations based on growth traits revealed three clusters corresponding to the three latitudinal regions – northern, central and southern. Needle morphological traits were not appropriate as markers of productivity. Clustering of populations based on needle morphology, and especially based on biochemical and molecular markers, did not correspond to the grouping based on growth traits.
