Water erosion in mountainous areas is a major problem, especially on steep slopes exposed to intense precipitation. This paper presents the analysis of the topsoil loss using the SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) model. The SWAT model is a deterministic catchment model with a daily time step. It was designed to anticipate changes taking place in the catchment area, such as climate change and changes in land use and development, including the quantity and quality of water resources, soil erosion and agricultural production. In addition to hydrological and environmental aspects, the SWAT model is used to address socio-economic and demographic issues, such as water supply and food production. This program is integrated with QGIS software. The results were evaluated using the following statistical coefficients: determination (R2), Nash-Sutcliff model efficiency (NS), and percentage deviation index (PBIAS). An assessment of modelling results was made in terms of their variation according to different land cover scenarios. In the case of the scenario with no change in use, the average annual loss of topsoil (average upland sediment yield) was found to be 14.3 Mg∙ha-1. The maximum upland sediment yield was 94.6 Mg∙ha-1. On the other hand, there is an accumulation of soil material in the lower part of the catchment (in-stream sediment change), on average 13.27 Mg∙ha-1 per year.

The study covered water resources of two mountain streams in the Polish Carpathians. These were the Biała Woda and Czarna Woda streams, the catchments of which are adjacent to each other. Water flows in both streams were measured during the hydrological years from 2006 to 2020. Next, water outflows from the catchments were calculated. The study aimed to determine differences in the water resources of those catchments in a very small mountainous area. The study showed quantitative similarity in water resources in the entire multi-annual period but at the same time large differences in shorter periods. Instantaneous and daily outflows showed the largest differences, but differences in annual outflows of up to 20% were also recorded. Therefore, hydrological data from operational cross-sections to assess water resources of neighbouring uncontrolled watercourses should cover multi-annual mean values. It was found that during periods of increased runoff (from melting snow or precipitation), the outflow from the Biała Woda catchment was much larger, while during rain-free periods, the outflow from the Czarna Woda catchment prevailed. All short-term flood like outflows were at least several tens of per cent higher in the Biała Woda catchment. The higher retention capacity of the Czarna Woda catchment can be attributed to the land use (mainly forest areas). The results can be used for modelling catchments of similar parameters and determining their retention capacity.

The intensive agricultural use of the land affects both quantity and quality of river water in the catchment area. Such impact is visible also in the Szreniawa River catchment in the Małopolskie Voivodeship. The combination of intensive plowing and soil susceptibility to water erosion are the main causes of soil and nutrients depletion during the heavy rainfall. The aim of the study is to determine changes in the water quality in the Szreniawa River catchment compared to the agriculture use and precipitation level. The quality of surface water has been analysed in the river catchment area in three sampling points. The concentration of the total suspended soils in the samples collected after heavy rainfall in August 2017 reached a value of 837 mg·dm–3. The average concentrations of N-NO3 in the years of 2016–2019 ranged from 0.16 to 13.46 mg·dm–3, with the highest values in the summer (up to 13.46 mg·dm–3). The concentration of N-NH4 and P-PO4 in the Szreniawa water was affected by precipitation. The highest value of average concentration of N-NH4 3.00 mg·dm–3 was recorded in the autumn of 2019 in the middle section of the river. The highest value of P-PO4 0.90 mg·dm–3 was recorded in the autumn of 2019 mostly due to water erosion of the loess areas. Erosion has been caused by the short-term heavy rainfall. As a result, suspended solids, soluble and insoluble phosphorus compounds leaked to the river.

The influence of Trichoderma harzianum TRS 59 on melons ‘Melba’, was investigated in the greenhouse experiment in 2016–2019. Seeds were sown in end of April or in early May and transplanted to containers 8 dm3 (2 plants per each) in June. Fruits were harvested in August and September. In 2016–2017, T. harzianum applied each year to the substrate increased insignificantly the yield by 16% and 17% and the fruit mass by 3% and 9%, comparing with control. In 2019, yield decreased by 19% and fruit mass by 12% comparing with control. Intensive feeding of the cotton aphid (Aphis gossypii) reduced the vigor of plants in 2019. The concentration of vitamin C decreased in 2018, extract and dry mass of fruits decreased, especially in the treatment with T. harzianum.

During potato desiccation the above-ground parts can be destroyed by mechanical, mechanical-chemical, or chemical methods. In the current study, the mechanical-chemical method was used and instead of chemical compounds natural nonanoic acid (pelargonic acid) was used. Nonanoic acid is a natural active ingredient that can be extracted from vegetable oil (rapeseed oil). It is a short chain fatty acid and a natural product, that fits well with the principles of the Green Revolution, which has introduced restrictions worldwide on the use of chemical plant protection products and promotes natural ones. For comparison carfentrazone-ethyl and glufosinate-ammonium were used. Studies were carried out in Poland during 2012–2014 with the potato variety Ikar, which is known to be among the varieties difficult to desicccate in Poland. The results show that potato leaves were efficiently destroyed by both nonanoic acid and chemicals (carfentrazone-ethyl and glufosinate-ammonium). The level of destruction varied from 94.5% to 99%. The level of stalk drying caused by nonanoic acid was high and it was similar to that of chemical desiccants. None of the studied desiccants significantly affected yield, vascular necrosis or quantity of starch in tubers.

The paper presents the results of a study on water relations conducted in the hydrological years 2000−2010 in the catchment of Ługowina and Ługowinka in the western part of Wrocław (SW Poland). The studied object was created in the mid−1990s by afforestation of nearly 100 ha of meliorated agricultural land. The research objective was to determine the changes in the resources of ground water retention under the effect of damming structures in diverse hydrometeorological conditions. The analyses concerned the changes in the mean level of the ground water table in an area with outflow regulated by three dams and, for comparison, in an area with natural water management. The study showed that in the period from March to June, i.e. the time of the highest water demand from trees, the level of the ground water table in the area with regulated outflow was higher by about 30 cm compared to the control area. Correct operation of the damming structures, consisting in annual regulation of outflow, allows effective restoration of springtime resources of ground water retention. At the end of the vegetation period, the level of the ground water table was usually relatively stable over the entire object, which indicates cyclic depletion of retention resources of the local micro−catchment basin. During the vegetation period those resources could be restored only in the case of occurrence of high precipitation. The effectiveness of the regulated outflow in the first half of the vegetation period was noted also in dry years 2002−2005, with simultaneous overall decrease of water resources in the scale of the country. The observations demonstrated also that sporadically (in very wet periods) the water−melioration system was unable to drain the excess water. That caused the occurrence of local floodings that threatened the health status of the trees. One can conclude that the use of water−melioration infrastructure typical for agricultural areas for the regulation of outflow from a local micro−catch−ment basin in the conditions of a lowland river valley is an effective method of improvement of ground water resources. The highest effectiveness in terms of increased retention was noted in the period of the most intensive growth of trees. In case of afforestation of post−agricultural lands this may have a highly positive effect on the quality of cultivations and their subsequent development and health status.

The rychtal pine is one of the most valuable ecotypes of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) approved for the breeding purposes in Poland. However, it occupies stands typical for oaks and beeches as shown by the compatibility analysis of species composition in relation to the habitat type in which they occur. Such result raises some doubts in terms of the naturalness of the rychtal pine and calls its history and origin into question. In the present study, we used the set of nuclear microsatellite markers to characterize and compare the gene pool composition of the selected seed tree stands of the rychtal pine with 200−year−old pine trees which grow at the Syców Forest District (SW Poland). We aimed to know to what extent the set of alleles specified for the group of the oldest trees from natural habitats is represented in the younger forest tree stands of the rychtal pine. The analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) and clustering analysis showed that the gene pool of the studied pine populations was homogenous (FST=0,02%, K=1). The parameters of genetic variation were similar for all populations except for the mean number of alleles. On average, 25 new alleles were found in two rychtal pine seed tree stands as compared to the set of alleles found in the group of old pine trees. However, all alleles defined for old pines were also present in the gene pool of younger rychtal pine forest stands. The differences in the gene pool richness result most likely from quite high differences in the number of individuals analyzed from each population. In conclusion, our results indicate the common origin of the studied Scots pine populations.

In this work, vacuum hot pressed Ni-Mn-Sn-In Heusler alloys with different concentration of In (0, 2 and 4 at.%), were investigated. The magneto-structural behaviour and microstructure dependencies on chemical composition and on heat treatment were examined. It was found that the martensite start transformation temperature increases with growing In content and to a lesser extent with increasing temperature of heat treatment. The high energy X-ray synchrotron radiation results, demonstrated that both chemical composition as well as temperature of heat treatment slightly modified the crystal structures of the studied alloys. Microstructural investigation performed by transmission electron microscopy confirmed chemical composition and crystal structure changes in the alloys.

This paper presents control method for multiple two-wheeled mobile robots moving in formation. Trajectory tracking algorithm from [7] is extended by collision avoidance, and is applied to the different type of formation task: each robot in the formation mimics motion of the virtual leader with a certain displacement. Each robot avoids collisions with other robots and circular shaped, static obstacles existing in the environment. Artificial potential functions are used to generate repulsive component of the control. Stability analysis of the closed-loop system is based on Lyapunov-like function. Effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is illustrated by simulation results.

The aim of the study was to examine responses of ‘Premium Red’ poinsettia cultivated on ebb-and-flow benches at different nutrient solution concentrations (1.6, 2.0 and 2.4 mS·cm-1). Plants were grown at a greenhouse in 1.2 dm3 pots, filled in TS2 medium. The highest plants with the largest diameters and best quality were found when EC of the nutrient solution concentration was 2.0 or 2.4 mS·cm-1. At the vegetative and bract coloration stages, leaves of plants supplied with nutrient solutions at 2.0 and 2.4 mS·cm-1 had higher status of chlorophyll than those of from nutrient solution of 1.6 mS·cm-1. As the nutrient solution concentration increased, both concentrations of salts and macronutrients (N-NO3, P, K, Ca, Mg) in the medium increased. It was concluded that in cultivation of poinsettia on ebb-and-flow benches, adequate EC value of nutrient solution concentration was 2.0 mS·cm-1.

The aim of the study was to examine reproductive and vegetative responses of ‘Growdena F1’ tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum L.) to use of potassium silicate fertilizer (as Silvit 15.0% SiO3) into reused peat substrate. Investigations were carried out at a greenhouse in 2013 and 2014. Tomatoes were treated with potassium silicate 2 times: immediately after tomato planting and a month later, at a rate of 0.11 g silicon (Si) per plant per year. Potassium silicate was applied as 1% water solution during plant irrigation. In each term, 200 ml Silvit of Si-containing solution per plant was applied. Plants unsupplied with potassium silicate serves as the control. The results showed that application of potassium silicate was able to improve tomato root healthiness, but only in the second year of the study, when the presence of pathogens in the tested substrate was high. The increases in marketable and total fruit yields as a result of use of potassium silicate was found only in 2014. It is concluded that at high multiplication of root pathogens in the substrate, the application of Sicontaining fertilizers do not protect sufficiently roots against infection.
