- Opis:
- The aim of the chapter Bifocal Vision, or About the Works of Shirin Neshtat by Natalia Kotarba is to analyse the work of Shirin Neshat—a photographer and artist born in Iran but educated in the United States, who focuses in her video art projects on the problem of the status of Muslim women. Neshat’s works challenge the sexist and racist stereotypes of Muslim women, occuring both inside and outside the Islamic world. The analysis, registering the key moments of the artistic evolution that Neshat has undergone (the way from photography through video art to film), also reveals the differences in her perceptions and decision making in the matter (from the first photographic works very much embedded in the political discourse through slightly more poetic video works, to the feature film). The Creative evolution—namely changing the medium of transition from the static photographs to the “moving image”—which undoubtedly determines the difference in the details of portraying issues that Neshat examines. The issues portrayed are the male-female relationships and the status of women in the Muslim world. Furthermore, it is interesting to examine these differences in perception (in the image that they create), depending on the medium used. The process of changing the medium itself and its importance in the the creative development, for Neshat, is an interesting theoretical problem worth attention. The premise of this study is to conduct a two-track analysis, investigating both of these research issues.
