Opis:: Cyprian Norwid’s Stygmat from the perspective of Emmanuel Levinas’s philosophy of dialogue This study is an attempt to read Cyprian Norwids Stygmat anew, employing a deepened perspective that comes from Emmanuel Levinas’s philosophy of dialogue. First, the author points to the convergence of the poet’s and the philosopher’s views, especially when it comes to the special place occu- pied by the man, interpersonal relations, and effort. While reconstructing the plot of the novella, the author analyzes relationship between principal characters - Oskar and Róża, and Oskar and the Narrator; he pays atten- tion to the issue of effort and openness towards the other person in forging a relationship. Using Levinas’s terminology, the author describes Oskar’s condition - separation and disintegration of his identity - which made it impossible for him to carry the burden of responsibility for the encounter with the other person. This applies to the Narrator as well; he does not fulfill the role of the confidant - as selected for the role by Oskar - nor does he find fulfilment as a writer. The Narrator remains a passive observer of the events, which his conversation with Redaktor testifies to. As far as the ending of the novella is concerned the author turns to irony (very characteristic of Norwid) and the difficulty in distinguishing between moments in which the poet expresses serious and true statements and those with ironic flair.

Opis:: Two distinctive civilizations along with their specific systems of values may prove complementary in the process of funding a new global ethics, which will set basis for the universal human rights system. These ethics are constituted by supernational synthesis of the most precious values from the heritage of Renaissance and Enlightenment as well as the Confucian phlilosophy. According to the theory of professor Tu Wenming, “Confucian ideal of an individual may be attained more completely in a liberal democratic society than in a traditional imperial dictatorship or a contemporary autocratic regime”, whereas “Confucian tradition may provide us with spiritual resources necessary to develop new vision of society, deriving them from the very core of the theories of Enlightenment”. Professor Jan Rowiński admits that Tu’s proposal “gains a new meaning on international and regional level, not only in the light of the repercussions of the September 11th, but also as a dire need to fill the void resulting from the deep crisis of ideology and professed values, moral oblivion and consecration of money. These are the social and ethical costs of transformation, not only in People’s Republic of China.” Tu’s theory raises an alternative for the “clearly utilitarian attempts, being subjected to political needs, to establish specific, Asian or Chinese, moral identity as a counterbalance (…) to the universal values which human rights are directly derived from.”
