    Tekst nawiązuje do Międzynarodowej Konferencji Przybosia zorganizowanej w dniach 8–9 kwietnia 1992 r. na University of Illinois w Chicago, ale głównym bohaterem artykułu jest Tymoteusz Karpowicz, spiritus movens tego przedsięwzięcia, poeta, dramaturg i profesor UIC . Autorka tekstu opisuje próby popularyzacji polskiej tradycji awangardowej wśród amerykańskiej Polonii. Próbuje także zbadać związek między działalnością naukową i popularno-naukową Karpowicza a jego preferencjami estetycznymi, proponowanym modelem poezji czy stosunkiem do innych poetów (m.in. Cypriana Kamila Norwida, Bolesława Leśmiana, Juliana Przybosia czy Czesława Miłosza). Artykuł jest refleksją na temat estetycznych i etycznych wymagań Karpowicza wobec sztuki: jego zamiłowania do jednorodnych wzorców literackich oraz przekonania, że poezja jest szersza niż słowa, że twórczość i życie są nierozłączne.
    The text refers to the International Conference on Przyboś organised on April 8–9, 1992, at University of Illinois at Chicago, but the main character of the article is Tymoteusz Karpowicz, spiritus movens of that undertaking, the poet, dramatist and professor at UIC. The authoress of the text describes his attempts to popularise the Polish avant-garde tradition among American Polonia. She also tries to investigate the relationship between Karpowicz’s scientific and popular science activity and his aesthetic preferences, proposed poetry model or attitude to other poets (such as Cyprian Kamil Norwid, Bolesław Leśmian, Julian Przyboś or Czesław Miłosz). The article is a reflection on Karpowicz’s aesthetic and ethical requirements to art: his passion for unimitative literature models and the conviction that poetry is broader than words, that creativity and life are inseparable.

    The author’s subject of interest is olfactory experience and its effect on the form of the space presented by futurists. The futurists develop new sensitivity, open to “sharp” stimuli, and not avoiding dissonances. The smell becomes in this context a component of the constructed space, appertaining to the forms of intensity, dynamic forms. The scent appeals to intuition rather than reasonable calculation, encouraging the futurist “new opening”. Also a broader context of the considerations seems important: the pursuit, declared in program texts of the futurists, of going beyond the convention of three dimension towards an n-dimensional space experienced with all senses; in other words the will to differentiate the ways of perception in order to enrich special imagination.

War “Entomology” of Maria Pawlikowska‑JasnorzewskaThe author of this article is interested in insect motifs appearing above all in Maria Pawlikowska‑Jasnorzewska’s Szkicownik poetycki. The modern war described by the poet shatters the epidermal order of the world; it seems to allow the incomprehensible – that which is not an object yet, such as insects‑planes, but which is not a subject anymore, such as the human changed by the war. The latter – reduced to the role of a trash animal, a stigmatised being – imperceptibly finds himself or herself in the world that he or she is prone to perceive as the world of the insect.     The article interprets Leśmian’s poetic figure of home. It indicates emptiness, the sense of mourning after losing oneself, but paradoxically it also denotes renewal of life energy and the source of vitality. Here the lexical items such as “strangeness”, “alienation” and “emptiness” interact to form the fundamental concept of home. The author investigates the tensions between the contradictory states of existential uncertainty and the desire to be “at home” and to belong somewhere. Finally, Leśmian’s works illustrate the conviction that in this destabilized world it is through relating to others that we find stability, if only temporarily.

    The author of the article compares the writer‘s poetic and horticultural activity. She is interested in Vilnius heritage (especially that connected with Stanisław Bonifacy Jundziłł), which shaped the natural sensitivity of the poet, and the famed home garden at Oak Park (the suburbs of Chicago), or, as Ryszard Sawicki suggested, Karpowicz’s “American Wilno”. The author of the text asks about the discord between the consciously worked-out lack of sensuality of the poet‘s poems and the sensual richness of the gardener who describes his attitude to nature in interviews and letters. She also propounds the thesis that Karpowicz’s poetry can be interpreted as a conceptual escape from the garden and sensuality, from the imposing and never overstretched nature of nature, and from this perspective it may be viewed also as yet another form of Karpowicz’s “creative negation”. Karpowicz-creator breaks with referentiality embedded in a concrete, sensual experience; he shifts attention from what is found to what is potential. He does not seem to think back to the “place on Earth”; he rather actively creates its own “place in existence”. He creates it − like his “American Vilnius” – from scratch.

    Wydaje się, że Bolesław Leśmian mógł antycypować współczesną krytyczną refleksję nad niepełnosprawnością (disability studies). Za Tymoteuszem Karpowiczem poezję autora Ballady dziadowskiej odczytywać można między innymi jako obronę bycia tym, czym się jest, a niekoniecznie tym, czym by się chciało być. Teza ta jest punktem wyjścia do tego, by raz jeszcze bliżej przyjrzeć się niektórym Leśmianowskim postaciom, a także proponowanej przez poetę koncepcji wspólnoty – wspólnoty naznaczonej niedoskonałościami. Za Leśmianem, interesuje mnie ułomność jako istotna część życia manifestującego się w formach kruchych i obarczonych wadami. A w tym kontekście także – eksplorowane przez poetę pogranicze śmieszności i tragizmu. W artykule omawiane są przede wszystkim dwie parodie: Leśmianowska Ballada dziadowska (dialogująca ze Świtezianką Adama Mickiewicza) i Lipa Artura Marii Swinarskiego, nawiązująca do wspomnianej ballady Leśmiana, ale i głównych wątków jego twórczości.
    It seems that Bolesław Leśmian could anticipate the contemporary critical reflection on disability (disability studies). According to Tymoteusz Karpowicz, the poetry of the author of The Beggar’s Ballad [Ballada dziadowska] can be read, among other things, as a defence of being what you are and not necessarily what you want to be. This thesis is intended to serve as a starting point to look more closely at some of Leśmian’s characters as well as his concept of the community, which was marked by imperfections. Following Leśmian, I am interested in the infirmity as an essential part of life manifested in fragile and frail forms. In this context, I also describe the borderline of ridiculousness and tragedy explored by the poet. This article draws primarily on two parodies: The Beggar’s Ballad [Ballada dziadowska] by Bolesław Leśmian (entering into dialogue with The Water Nymph of Świteź [Świtezianka] by Adam Mickiewicz) and The Linden Tree [Lipa] by Artur Maria Swinarski, referring to the mentioned Leśmian’s ballad, but also to the main themes of his work.

    A park is described in this article as a scene of public life where members of the modern society develop their shared forms of behaviour. This is also the perspective of interpretation for the final scene of Witold Gombrowicz’s short story Lawyer Kraykowski’s Dancer. A humorous portrait of manners drawn by the author could constitute a peculiar commentary to the nightlife of the Warsaw parks of the 1920s. A park seems to be a suitable metaphor chosen to tell the story of a lawyer and “a dancer”, as well as of the complex social relations determined by humanizing actions and the feeling of uncertainty about human nature which constantly evades them. The authors of the article are particularly interested in this “uncertain” aspect of nature inscribed in the figure of an urban garden, which reminds us that all our calls for regulation are just an appearance, a veil hiding an always distant phantasm.

    Opis:
    Induced osteogenesis of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) may provide an important tool for bone injuries treatment. Human umbilical cord and adipose tissue are routinely discarded as clinical waste and may be used as noncontroversial MSCs sources. It still remains to be verified which source of MSCs is the most suitable for bone regeneration. The aim of this research was to investigate the osteogenic potential of human MSCs derived from adipose tissue (AT-MSCs) and Wharton's jelly of the human umbilical cord (WJ-MSCs) differentiated under the same conditions. Osteogenic differentiation of MSCs was detected and quantified by alizarin red S (ARS) staining for calcium deposition and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, osteoprotegerin (OPG), and osteocalcin (OC) secretion measurements. Under osteogenic conditions, after 21 days of differentiation, the measured ALP activity and calcium deposition were significantly higher in the AT-MSCs than in the WJ-MSCs, while the OPG and OC secretion were higher in the WJ-MSCs vs. AT-MSCs. Low concentrations of OPG and high levels of OC in AT-MSCs and WJ-MSCs, prove that these cells reached an advanced stage of the osteogenic differentiation. The levels of OC secreted by AT-MSCs were lower than by WJ-MSCs. Both cell types, AT-MSCs and WJ-MSCs possess a potential to differentiate towards the osteogenic lineage. The observed differences in the levels of osteogenic markers suggest that after 21-days of osteogenic differentiation, the AT-MSCs might have reached a more advanced stage of differentiation than WJ-MSCs.
