Tai Chi and Qigong are forms of movement derived from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), gaining more and more popularity around the world . Qigong is the oldest branch of TCM, whose oldest forms are over 5000 years old, dating back to the legendary Yellow Emperor. Tai Chi is a new fo rm which approximately dates back to 13th century . Qigong is a system of breathing exercises, body postures and movements, alongside with mental concentration, intended to maintain good health and control the flow of vital energy . Tai Chi is an ancient dis cipline of meditative movements practiced as a system of exercises . Tai Chi and Qigong exercises consist in performing slow, coordinated movements, controlling the position of the body in space, learning how to gradually move the weight from leg to leg. Th ey focus on attention, movement , relaxation of the body and silence of the mind . Tai Chi and Qigong have invaluable health benefits and strengthen the body, both physically and mentally. The results of the study confirm the beneficial effects of Tai Chi and Qigong exercises in patients with neurological disorders, imbalance, lowered bone density, weakened muscular strength, increased risk of falls, diseases of the cardiopulmonary system , cervical and lumbar spine pain, depression, anxiety, stress and many more.

Introduction: The positive impact of Tai Chi on body balance and coordination has been confirmed in many intervention and prevention programs for elderly people, especially in the field of falls and fractures. The aim of the study was to determine the impact of a six-month Tai Chi program on selfassessment of health condition of practitioners aged 50 years and older. The relationship between this variable and 10-year fracture risk was also evaluated. Material and Methods: The study involved 41 persons aged 50 and more (mean 61.5, SD=6.1) - beginning tai chi practice. Self-assessment of health condition was performed using a 5-point scale, while a 10-year fracture risk was estimated using both the FRAX calculator and the GARVAN nomogram (on-line versions). Self-assessment of health condition was conducted during the first and sixth month of Tai Chi classes. The fracture risk was assessed at the beginning of the training program. Results: There was a statistically significant improvement in self-assessment of health condition after 6 months of tai chi practice both in the whole study group (p=0.0023) and in the subgroup of women (p=0.0005). Perceived improvement was independent of age. There was also a correlation between better self-assessment of health condition measured before Tai Chi program and lower 10-year fracture risk calculated from GARVAN nomogram (p=0.0146). Greater improvement in self-assessment of health conditions a result of Tai Chi program was reported for participants with lower 10-year fracture risk estimated by GARVAN nomogram (p=0.0642). Conclusions: Health benefits from participating in the 6-month Tai Chi program have occurred in community-dwelling elderly people regardless of their age. Due to the different algorithms used in the FRAX and GARVAN tools and different definition of the term "osteoporotic fracture", it is not possible to directly compare the results obtained with these two methods.

Introduction: Tai Chi is a type of movement derived from Tr aditional Chinese Medicine, gaining popularity in Poland in recent years. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of 1 - year practice of Tai Chi on health behavior in adults. Material and Methods: The study was conducted from September 2014 to Octob er 2015 among 62 students of the Tai Chi Chuan School in Krakow ranging from 30 to 50 years old. The study involved 37 women as well as 25 men. The main test method used in our study was the Health Behavior Inventory (IZZ). Results: Results of this study i ndicate significant improvement of the average score of Health Behavior Index (p=0.000): from 75,1pts before Tai Chi program to 83,1pts after one year of practicing. The average value of this parameter among women increased from 75,9pts to 83,1pts (p=0.000 ) and among men from 73,9pts to 83,0pts (p=0.000). The beneficial effect of 1 - year Tai Chi practice was observed in all examined health behavior categories (proper nutrition habits, preventive behavior, positive mental attitude as well as proper nutrition) in the entire group as well as in men and women separately. The improvement observed was statistically significant (p<0.05). Before starting the Tai Chi program the average score of Health Behavior Index was significantly lower when compared to the normat ive group (p=0.000) but after one year practice an improvement was observed and the level of statistically not significant difference was achieved (p=0.483). Conclusion: The beneficial effect of 1 - year Tai Chi training on overall improvement on health habi ts supports the need of further promotion of this physical activity among adults .
