The investment policy applied by seaport authorities has a great impact on the state of the natural environment in coastal regions. Unfortunately, in many cases, their environmental efforts are limited to the issues which are defined by the applicable legal regulations determined by International Maritime Organization, the Organization of United Nations and the European Commission etc. However, in recent years we can observe significant improvement in this area, especially in the seaports of Northern Europe. They often decide on highly capital-intensive pro-ecological investments allowing to reduce the level of pollution emitted from cruise ships during their handling in ports, such as e. g. the opportunity of connecting vessels to the shore-side energy supply systems. Various solutions in this area are currently used in the world. The ports in Northern Europe are currently the leaders in this area. The use of such solutions is cost-intensive, but it significantly reduces the level of pollution emitted by ships into the environment, and the level of noise and vibration caused by engines. This paper aims to assess the seaports' involvement in Northern Europe in the preparation of seaport infrastructure enabling cruise ships to be connected to the onshore power supply systems. The article contains the results of surveys conducted with the use of two methods to adjust the research technique to the respondents’ needs, i.e. CASI (Computer-Assisted Self Interviewing) and EMS (Electronic Mail Survey). The empirical research was conducted among the seaports in Northern Europe. The results of the survey may be of interest to seaport authorities and cruise ship owners.

For a decade, giant cruise ships have been introduced to the market. Nowadays, the largest cruise ships have the length of over 360 meters, draught up to 10 meters and capacity of 225 000 GT. This type of vessels can only be handled in seaports with appropriate depth of waterways and proper length of berths, large manoeuvring basin and facilities on seacoasts ready to serve thousands of passengers at the same time. The aim of this article is to identify cruise shipowners’ requirements regarding seaport infrastructure and analysis of challenges facing port authorities in terms of adapting ports to new trends in the cruise shipping market. In the article, a few research methods were applied: exploration method of data, desk research method and comparative analysis.

The main objective of the research is to assess the state of development of cruise ship tourism in the Mediterranean. The article also presents main homeports and ports of call and shows the most important cruise shipowners in the Mediterranean. Moreover, there are analyzed available stat istical data regarding cruise passengers in the Mediterranean and discussed a few examples of properly prepared port infrastructure for handling cruise ships on the example of ports in: Barcelona, Dubrovnik and Valleta (Malta). The research was realized using a method of desk research, a critical and comparative analysis of available statistical reports and publications and also other scientific materials.

Cruise ship tourism is an important segment of the maritime tourism market. “Cruising, according to CLIA (Cruise Line International Association), is one of the safest, most affordable and enjoyable vacation experiences available today and the industry continually reviews best practices and develops innovative technologies to further strengthen its safety record. A record 20 million – plus global passengers went on a cruise in 2012” [1]. In addition, this branch of industry has also generated thousands of jobs at sea and in the ports of calls and has brought huge incomes for local economies in visited tourist destinations. The main objective of this article is to assess the state of development of cruise ships tourism in Poland. In the first part of the article, there are included analysis of the number of cruise ship calls and passengers and there were also presented the largest cruise vessels that have visited seaports in Poland. There is also described the state of preparation of the seaports in Poland to support cruise ships. Moreover, there are also discussed the scope of services of the seaports in Poland, offered to ship-owners and a range of fees which must be borne by them. In addition, there are presented entities involved in handling of cruise ships while staying at the seaports. The article ends with a summary where it was indicated, inter alia, the reasons for the decreasing trend in the number of calls of cruise ships in Polish seaports.

For several years, marine tourism market has been experiencing a renaissance and is one of the fastest growing segment of the tourist economy. Strong competition on the marine carriers market forced them to seek out innovative products, and in the wake of that, their specialization, as well. At the same time, there has been a tendency to change a model of resting from passive lying in the Sun on aboard of the ships for an active participation in theme and profiled marine voyages. That caters to various customers’ needs and preferences. Owners of cruise vessels outdo each other in inventing the original theme offers for specific groups defined within: religious faiths, musical tastes, sport hobbies, health needs, or sexual orientation and many others. In both, polish and foreign literature, there is a noticeable lack, when it comes to a scientific approach to this phenomenon. In this light, it seems reasonable to take this topic of the research. The main aim of this article is an estimation of tenders in terms of theme cruises offered by marine carriers and making their generic classification. The research was realized using a method of desk research, a critical and comparative analysis of available literature, offers of marine tourist carriers, and also other scientific reports. Moreover, the author shows a list of criteria that could be implemented in the statistical researches of demand on theme cruises.

W dobie ostrej walki konkurencyjnej na rynku turystycznym, miasta portowe dostrzegają potrzebę strategicznego podejścia do kreowania swojego wizerunku Każde miasto portowe dba o swój wizerunek, aby być konkurencyjnym wobec innych miast portowych. Wymaga to jednak zaangażowania władz lokalnych w kreowanie marki i wizerunku miast, jako otwartych na współpracę i rozwój w sferze gospodarki morskiej, w tym także turystyki morskiej. W pierwszej części artykułu wskazano cel badań, problem badawcze oraz metodologię badań i dokonano też przeglądu literatury na temat kreowania marki i wizerunku miast. Następnie opisano elementy kształtujące tożsamość miasta, oparte o wyniki badań zrealizowanych wśród podmiotów zaangażowanych w tworzenie marki i wizerunku miasta. W ostatniej części pracy zaprezentowano wyniki badań dotyczące działań podejmowanych przez różne grupy interesu w Gdyni, w zakresie tworzenia marki i wizerunku miasta Gdynia. Celem badań jest ocena aktywności władz lokalnych Gdyni w kreowanie marki i wizerunku miasta, jako morskiej destynacji turystycznej. Sformułowano także problemy badawcze 1.- Jaki cel wizerunkowy postawiły sobie władze samorządowe miasta Gdynia w działaniach marketingowych?, 2.- Jakie działania w zakresie budowania marki i wizerunku podejmuje samorząd miasta Gdyni?, 3.-W jaki sposób w działaniach wizerunkowych uwypuklony jest morski charakter miasta Gdynia? Wykorzystano metodę badań ankietowych połączoną z wywiadem ustandaryzowanym, metody analizy krytycznej, porównawczej oraz metody typu „desk research” dostępnej literatury polskojęzycznej i obcojęzycznej. Szczegółowa analiza elementów wpływających na tożsamość miasta Gdynia wykazała, że władze lokalne konsekwentnie realizują kształtowanie marki i wizerunku miasta Gdynia jako, morskiej destynacji turystycznej.
Summary In an era of strong competition on the tourist market, marine cities recognize the need for strategic approach to create their image. Each marine city looks for its image and competes with the other marine cities in order to attract tourists and investors. This requires involvement of local authorities in creating of the brand and image of the cities, as open for cooperation and development in the sphere of maritime economy, including tourism. In the first part of the article, there are discussed the purpose, research problems and methodology of researches made by the author. Next, an analysis of available polish and foreign literature about shaping the brand and image of cities has been made. In the next part of the article the elements shaping an identity of the city of Gdynia, based on the results of the research carried out among units involved in the creation of the brand and image of the city, have been showed. And in the last part of the article, results of the research on actions taken by various groups of interests in Gdynia, to shape the brand and image of the city, have been discussed. The purpose of the research is evaluation of engagement of local authorities of Gdynia in creating the brand and image of the city of Gdynia, as the center of maritime tourism in Poland. The following research problems were established: 1.-What is the aim of the town image in marketing efforts of the local authority of the city of Gdynia?; 2.- What action in terms of building a brand and town image does the local authority of the city of Gdynia take?; 3 - In what way the maritime nature of the city of Gdynia is visible in the branding efforts? The methods of poll surveys, combined with standardized interviews, were used in researches. In addition, the methods of critical and comparative analysis and the method of "desk research" of the literature available in Polish and foreign languages, were applied. A detailed analysis of all elements affecting the identity of Gdynia was made in the article, and the conclusion from this analysis is that, the local authority of the city of Gdynia consistently implements shaping of the image and branding of Gdynia as a maritime tourist destination.

In the polish literature there is noticeable the lack of terminology of maritime tourism and its classification. This issue has been treated rather occasionally till now, without any deeply analysis of the basic definitions and concepts. The maritime tourism is variously defined by different sectors in various conutries, it means by: geographers, planners, experts of marine sector, tour-operators or ferry and cruising companies. In this light, it seems reasonable to try to sort out the basic terms and concepts. The main aim of this article is the analysis of the existing definitions and classification proposed in the literature of Polish and foreign languages. It is also made the critical analysis of these definitions and concepts. The value added of the article is the attempt to define maritime tourism by the author. Moreover, the author shows a list of criteria that could be implemented in the statistical researches of demand in the maritime tourism sector and possible forms of maritime tourism. The researches were realized using a method of desk research, a critical analysis of the available literature and comparative analysis.

Ponadto sformułowano następujące problemy badawcze: (1) Jaki jest zakres kompetencji zarządów portów morskich w Polsce w zakresie planowania i rozwoju portów zagwarantowany prawnie? (2) Jakiego rodzaju inwestycje zrealizowane zostały z inicjatywy Zarządu Morskiego Portu Gdynia SA w latach 2007-2013? (3) Jaki jest stan przygotowania infrastruktury portowej w porcie morskim w Gdyni do obsługi morskich statków wycieczkowych? Badania zrealizowano w okresie od lipca 2013 do kwietnia 2014 r. W badaniach wykorzystano metody badań eksploracyjnych oraz desk research materiałów źródłowych i raportów z realizacji inwestycji, ale także wyniki wywiadu przeprowadzonego z przedstawicielami Zarządu ZMPG-A SA. Analizie poddano także akty normatywne odnoszące się do działalności portów morskich.[...]
In recent years, the authorities of Polish seaports have been conducted the active investment policy. The main stimulus to undertake these activities was the ability to gain financial support from European funds, mainly from the Cohesion Fund, the European Regional Development Fund and the Norwegian Financial Mechanism. In Poland, the port authorities were able to submit the investment projects to apply for EU support to the Infrastructure and Environment Operational Programme and the Regional Operational Programmes for the Pomeranian regions. The seaport authorities rebuilt quays, deepened and widened the waterways in the port basins, modernized communication accessibility to the ports from the land and the sea, as well as built logistics centers and introduced innovative solutions in the field of navigation and improved the safety of navigation. However, the analysis showed that investment activities in Polish seaports still allocate not enough space to issues of preparation of port infrastructure to support passengers' cruise ships and adaptation of the quays for terminals dedicated for handling of cruise ships. The objective of the study in this article is to assess the investment activities, realized by the Port of Gdynia Authority S.A, in the field of preparation of the port infrastructure in Gdynia to handle cruise ships.

In every sector of the economy, the use of digital technologies can be observed. In maritime transport, the use of digital technologies is used to operate the infrastructure as well as to reach the customer. The digital transformation in ferry shipping plays a significant role, not only in operations, but also in the way passengers are acquired. The availability and ease of purchasing tickets are important from the point of view of the users' application and the accompanying experience, so-called user experience. However, it is important to ensure the security in cyberspace for both parties of transactions, which is conditioned by the implementation of international, EU and the state legal acts. The aim of the article is to present the legal acts regarding digitalization and cybersecurity in maritime navigation and to identify the digital activities of ferry carriers. The paper uses the exploratory method, the literature review and desk research method. Critical and comparative analysis was also carried out.
