The status of the vesicomyid genus Pleurophopsis Van Winkle, 1919, which occurs in chemosynthetic environments, is evaluated based on a redescription of the type material and observations on subsequently collected material. It is concluded that the name Pleurophopsis should not be used because the presently known material of its type species, P. unioides of middle Miocene age, does not show critical hinge details like nymph, subumbonal pit, and cardinal tooth 3a of the right valve. From the presently known characters, it can be concluded that Adulomya? unioides is very similar to the type species of Adulomya and Ectenagena, and it is shown that Ectenagena is a synonym of Adulomya. However, should better preserved material of P. unioides become available and confirm its close relation to Adulomya and Ectenagena, Pleurophopsis would have priority as it is the oldest of the three names.

Three new bivalve genera and species are described from Upper Triassic hydrocarbon seep deposits from the Kasımlar shales in the Taurus Mountains in southern Turkey. Terzileria gregaria and Kasimlara kosuni belong to the carditiid family Kalenteridae, and Aksumya krystyni belongs to the anomalodesmatan superfamily Pholadomyoidae. A single specimen is described in open nomenclature as Kasimlara sp. due to its significantly more angular shell profile compared to K. kosuni. The kalenterids Terzileria and Kasimlara narrow the stratigraphic gap between two seep-inhabiting “modiomorphid” clades: the Silurian–Devonian Ataviaconcha and the Late Jurassic–Cretaceous Caspiconcha. This raises the questions whether these four genera are members of a single phylogenetic lineage that continuously inhabited deep-sea hydrocarbon seeps from the Silurian to the Cretaceous (the “single lineage hypothesis”), or are repeated offshoots of various lineages that convergently developed similar morphological adaptations to this habitat (the “repeated colonization hypothesis”). Aksumya represents the first anomalodesmatan genus that appears to be restricted to the seep environment, considering that all previous claims of seep-inhabiting anomalodesmatans are questionable.

Seven species of chemosymbiotic bivalves are described from the late Pliocene Stirone River hydrocarbon seep complex in northern Italy, including one new species and two in open nomenclature. The known species are the solemyid Acharax doderleini, the lucinids Lucinoma persolida and Megaxinus ellipticus, and the vesicomyid Isorropodon aff. perplexum; in open nomenclature we report two lucinids, including the largest species of Lucinoma known from the Italian Pliocene to date, and a strongly inflated, large Anodontia sp. The most abundant species at the Stirone seep complex is the lucinid Megaxinus stironensis sp. nov. This Pliocene seep fauna differs from that of the well-known Miocene “Calcari a Lucina” seep deposits by lacking large bathymodiolin mussels and vesicomyid clams; instead, the dominance of the lucinid Megaxinus stironensis gives this fauna a unique character. We speculate that at the Stirone seep complex, Megaxinus had occupied the ecological niche that Meganodontia occupied at the Miocene “Calcari a Lucina” seep sites in the Mediterranean basin, and that the dominance of Megaxinus could be a wide-spread feature of Pliocene chemosynthesis-based ecosystems in Mediterranean Pliocene.

Opis:
Carbonate blocks with silicified fossils were recovered from a newly recognized cold seep deposit, the Satsop Weatherwax site, in the basal Humptulips Formation, along the West Fork of Satsop River in Washington State, USA. The petrography and the stable carbon isotope signature of the carbonate, with values as low as -43.5‰, indicate that these carbonate blocks formed at an ancient methane seep. The fossils recovered from this block include five vesicomyid specimens, two fragments of a thyasirid, five specimens of the peltospirid Depressigyra, two specimens of the hyalogyrinid Hyalogyrina, 25 specimens of the neritimorph Thalassonerita eocenica, and three limpet specimens of two different species. Five species can be described as new: Nuculana acutilineata (Nuculanoidea), Desbruyeresia belliatus (Provannidae), Provanna fortis (Provannidae), Orbitestella dioi (Orbitestellidae), and Leptochiton terryiverseni (Polyplacophora). Other fossils recovered from this site are numerous serpulid tubes, echinoid spines, one brachiopod fragment and two neogastropods. Almost all species recovered belong to extant genera and the fauna has a modern character, but are different from species found in younger seeps in Washington State. This is the first record of an orbitestellid from an ancient cold seep deposit, the first fossil provannids from the Humptulips Formation, and the first fossil record of Desbruyeresia from North America.

Cenozoic deep−water sediments of the Lincoln Creek, Makah, and Pysht formations in western Washington State, USA, contain sunken driftwood and whale bones that were colonized by invertebrates which largely depend on this type of transient habitat. These fossil woodand whale−fall faunules yielded six new mollusk species that appear to have been endemic to these biogenic microhabitats, except for one species which also occurs in cold−seep limestones. The new gastropod species are the neomphalid Leptogyra squiresi, the buccinid Colus sekiuensis, the allogastropod Xylodiscula okutanii, and the new bivalve species are the protobranch “Nuculana” posterolaevia, the mytilid Idas? olympicus, and the heterodont Thyasira xylodia.

Vestimentiferan tube worms living at deep−sea hydrothermal vents and cold seeps have been considered as a clade with a long and continuing evolutionary history in these ecosystems. Whereas the fossil record appears to support this view, molecular age estimates do not. The two main features that are used to identify vestimentiferan tubes in the fossil record are longitudinal ridges on the tube’s surface and a tube wall constructed of multiple layers. It is shown here that chaetopterid tubes from modern vents and seeps—as well as a number of fossil tubes from shallow−water environments—also show these two features. This calls for a more cautious interpretation of tubular fossils from ancient vent and seep deposits. We suggest that: current estimates for a relatively young evolutionary age based on molecular clock methods may be more reliable than the inferences of ancient “vestimentiferans” based on putative fossils of these worms; not all of these putative fossils actually belong to this group; and that tubes from fossil seeps should be investigated for chitinous remains to substantiate claims of their potential siboglinid affinities.

Opis:
In many applications, there is a need to choose mathematical models that depend on non-smooth functions. The task of simulation becomes especially difficult if such functions appear on the right-hand side of an initial value problem. Moreover, solution processes from usual numerics are sensitive to roundoff errors so that verified analysis might be more useful if a guarantee of correctness is required or if the system model is influenced by uncertainty. In this paper, we provide a short overview of possibilities to formulate non-smooth problems and point out connections between the traditional non-smooth theory and interval analysis. Moreover, we summarize already existing verified methods for solving initial value problems with non-smooth (in fact, even not absolutely continuous) right-hand sides and propose a way of handling a certain practically relevant subclass of such systems. We implement the approach for the solver VALENCIA-IVP by introducing into it a specialized template for enclosing the first-order derivatives of non-smooth functions. We demonstrate the applicability of our technique using a mechanical system model with friction and hysteresis. We conclude the paper by giving a perspective on future research directions in this area.

A limestone deposit with an unusual fauna is reported from the late Miocene of northern Italy (Ca’ Fornace site). The petrography of the carbonate and its distinct carbon isotope signature (with δ¹³C values as low as -57.6‰) clearly identify this limestone as an ancient methane-seep deposit. The dominant faunal elements are serpulid tubes belonging to Protis, and extremely inflated, medium-sized shells of the lucinid bivalve Anodontia mioinflata sp. nov. Also common is the small bathymodiolin Idas aff. tauroparva, plus some large specimens of the lucinid Lucinoma, and poorly preserved, medium-sized specimens of a possible vesicomyid bivalve, an arcid bivalve, small gastropods of the genera Laeviphitus (Elachisinidae), Anatoma (Scissurellidae), as well as desmophyliid and caryophyllid scleractinian corals. This faunal assemblage is quite distinct from the typical Miocene seep faunas in northern Italy, which are dominated by large bivalves of the Lucinidae (Meganodontia), Vesicomyidae (Archivesica), and Bathymodiolinae, possibly due to a shallower depositional depth of the Ca’ Fornace site.

Fossil catshark egg capsules, Scyliorhinotheca goederti gen. et sp. nov., are reported from a Late Eocene deep−water methane−seep calcareous deposit in western Washington State, USA. The capsules are preserved three−dimensionally and some show mineralized remnants of the ribbed capsule wall consisting of small globular crystals that are embedded in a microsparitic matrix. The globules are calcitic, but a strontium content of 2400–3000 ppm suggests that they were origi− nally aragonitic. The carbonate enclosing the egg capsules, and the capsule wall itself, show 13C values as low as −36.5‰, suggesting that formation was induced by the anaerobic oxidation of methane and hence in an anoxic environ− ment. We put forward the following scenario for the mineralization of the capsule wall: (i) the collagenous capsules expe− rienced a sudden change from oxic to anoxic conditions favouring an increase of alkalinity; (ii) this led to the precipitation of aragonitic globules within the collagenous capsule wall; (iii) subsequently the remaining capsule wall was mineralized by calcite or aragonite; (iv) finally the aragonitic parts of the wall recrystallized to calcite. The unusual globular habit of the early carbonate precipitates apparently represents a taphonomic feature, resulting from mineralization mediated by an organic matrix. Taphonomic processes, however, are at best contributed to an increase of alkalinity, which was mostly driven by methane oxidation at the ancient seep site.

Opis:
Cretaceous cold−seep deposits of the Yezo Group on Hokkaido, Japan, yield a rich and well−preserved mollusk fauna. The systematics of nine bivalve species previously reported from these deposits can now be reevaluated using newly collected fossils. The fossils include a Cenomanian specimen of Nucinella gigantea with a drill hole possibly made by a naticid, by far the oldest record of a drill hole from a cold seep site. In Japan, Cretaceous seep bivalve assemblages are characterized by (i) the unique occurrence of large specimens of Nucinella (Manzanellidae), (ii) the commonly present nuculid Acila (Truncacila), and (iii) a high diversity of lucinids, possibly as many as four distinct genera. Two new species described are the Albian Acharax mikasaensis(Solemyidae) and the Albian to Campanian Thyasira tanabei (Thyasiridae), of which the former had previously been misidentified as the oldest vesicomyid, the latter as the oldest Conchocele.

We report 44 mollusk species from four Pliocene to Pleistocene seep deposits in Leyte Island, Philippines. The bivalves are represented by 30 species, of which eleven are new (Conchocele majimai, Conchocele visayaensis, Channelaxinus antipoloensis, Dulcina liogliogensis, Dulcina magoi, Elliptiolucina fernandoi, Lucinoma canudai, Lucinoma velosoi, Lucinoma tinagoensis, Lucinoma kosatorea, Archivesica pastori), six are extant species known from the Philippines and surrounding waters (Meganodontia acetabulum, Lucinoma dulcinea, Lucinoma aff. kastoroae, Vesicomya margotae, “Pliocardia” ticaonica, “Pliocardia” indica), and five are extant species known from Japanese waters (Bathymodiolus securiformis, Divalucina soyoae, Archivesica kawamurai, Pliocardia kuroshimana, Elliptiolucina ingens). Remarkable about those latter species is that only a single one of them occurs as fossil in Japan, despite Japan’s rich fossil record of seep communities. This together with the large number of new species with close relatives in Japan suggests that at least part of the modern Japanese vent and seep fauna originated in Philippine waters. More than one third (twelve) of the bivalve species reported here belong to the family Lucinidae, which is also very species-rich in shallow waters around the Philippines. Four new gastropods are described: Margarites hayashii, Vetulonia philippinensis, Cataegis ramosi, and Provanna azurini.

Fourteen gastropod species from 16 Mesozoic hydrocarbon seep carbonate deposits of the Great Valley Group and Franciscan Complex in California are described. Two genera are new: Bathypurpurinopsis has a fusiform shell with a siphonal fold, and variable Paskentana has turbiniform or littoriniform shells with spiral and/or scaly sculpture and convex or shouldered whorls. Due to the lack of data on shell microstructure and protoconch morphology, many of our taxonomic assignments have to remain tentative at present. Species that are described as new include: Hokkaidoconcha bilirata, H. morenoensis, H. tehamaensis (Hokkaidoconchidae), Abyssochrysos? giganteum (Abyssochrysidae?), Paskentana globosa, P. berryessaensis, and Bathypurpurinopsis stantoni (Abyssochrysoidea, family uncertain). The total fauna represents a mixed bag of taxa that were: (i) widely distributed during the late Mesozoic (Amberleya); (ii) restricted to late Mesozoic seep carbonates in California (Atresius, Bathypurpurinopsis, Paskentana); and (iii) members of seep/deep−sea groups with a long stratigraphic range (abyssochrysids, hokkaidoconchids).

We present a systematic study of late Paleocene macrofauna from methane seep carbonates and associated driftwood in the shallow marine Basilika Formation, Spitsbergen, Svalbard. The fauna is composed of 22 taxa, comprising one brachiopod, 14 bivalves, three gastropods, three crustaceans, and one bony fish. The reported fish remains are among the first vertebrate body fossils from the Paleogene of Spitsbergen. One genus is new: the munidid decapod Valamunida Klompmaker and Robins gen. nov. Four new species are described: the terebratulide brachiopod Neoliothyrina nakremi Bitner sp. nov., the protobranch bivalve Yoldiella spitsbergensis Amano sp. nov., the xylophagain bivalve Xylophagella littlei Hryniewicz sp. nov., and the munidid decapod Valamunida haeggi Klompmaker and Robins gen. et sp. nov. New combinations are provided for the mytilid bivalve Inoperna plenicostata, the thyasirid bivalve Rhacothyas spitzbergensis, the ampullinid gastropod Globularia isfjordensis, and the munidid decapod Protomunida spitzbergica. Thirteen taxa are left in open nomenclature. The fauna contains a few last occurrences of Cretaceous survivors into the Paleocene, as well as first occurrences of Cenozoic taxa. It is composed of chemosymbiotic thyasirid bivalves and background species common in the northern Atlantic and Arctic during the Paleocene. Our results provide no evidence for a Paleocene origin of vesicomyid and bathymodiolin bivalves typical for Eocene and younger seep environments; instead, the Paleo cene seeps of the Basilika Formation are more similar to their Late Cretaceous equi valents rich in thyasirids.
