Opis:
Checking the parity of the data signal during transmission and reception is one way to ensure errorless transmission of data. In this communication the authors propose a method to implement an all-optical parity generator and checker using semiconductor optical amplifier-based Mach–Zehnder interferometers. The scheme, able to process input signals at the same wavelength, is characterized using return-to-zero modulated signals at 10 Gb/s. Correct logic bit sequences and clear open eye patterns with extinction ratios exceeding 10 dB are achieved. Simple structure and potential for integration make this architecture an interesting approach in photonic computing and optical signal processing.

Opis:
The present study was intended to facilitate ex situ conservation of Paphiopedilum venustum, a highly floriferous endangered terrestrial orchid species. A protocol was established for in vitro propagation and shoot multiplication. The cultures were initiated through asymbiotic seed germination technique, using undehisced and dehisced capsules. Four defined asymbiotic orchid seed germination media (terrestrial orchid medium, modified terrestrial orchid medium, Malmgren modified terrestrial orchid medium, Knudson C medium) were evaluated for their effectiveness in achieving maximum seed germination and early seedling development. The effect of darkness and 12-h photoperiod was also tested. Optimum seed germination, i.e., 82.7% was achieved on modified terrestrial orchid medium under a 12-h photoperiod using seeds from undehisced capsules. Shoot multiplication was accomplished using organic [peptone (1.0, 2.0 g Lˉ¹)] and inorganic [banana homogenate (10, 20, 30 g Lˉ¹) and potato powder (5.0, 10 g Lˉ¹)] growth supplements. Peptone at 1.0 g Lˉ¹ was the most effective in multiplying the shoots. Plantlets were acclimatized in the greenhouse with 80% survival frequency.

Opis:
The second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic has affected India significantly with country reporting more than 400,000 cases in the month of May 2021 and health system almost collapsing. This was attributed to the new mutant strain also called as the ‘Delta Strain’ which led to high surge of cases across the country. As the country was stabilising over this situation, another imminent threat in the form of Covid Associated Mucormycosis (CAM) challenged the already burdened health system of India. Also called as ‘Black Fungus,’ cases of CAM began to rise rapidly in the last week of May 2021 with multiple states reporting steady rise in the number of cases. Based on the published literature, India contributed to approximately 71% of global cases of CAM from December 2019 to start of April 2021, with majority of the cases occurring during the second wave. The present paper focuses on the epidemic of CAM during the second wave in India highlighting the causes, symptoms and various treatment modalities that have been adopted to cure the disease. Also, spotlight has also been thrown on some other nations where cases of CAM have begun to emerge. Some key recommendations are also mentioned which can prove vital towards disease prevention.

Opis:
Emerging variants of COVID-19 have threatened the effectiveness of intramuscular (IM) vaccines since that are made to target only the spike protein. Development of Intranasal (IN) vaccination has been proven to provide both the mucosal and systemic immune responses for broader and long lasting protection. Many IN vaccine candidates (virus-vectored vaccines, recombinant subunit vaccines and live attenuated vaccines) are in different phases of clinical trials and in near future many companies would be releasing their vaccines into the drug market. Potential advantages of IN vaccination over IM vaccination makes them ideal to be administered in children and developing populations of the world. This paper focuses on the very recent developments in intranasal vaccination with a spotlight on their safety and efficacy concerns. IN vaccination can prove to be game-changer in handling COVID-19 and potential viral contagious diseases in future.
