Opis:
Mieczysław Porebski was one of the most important Polish art historians of the twentieth century. An outstanding interpreter of nineteenth and twentieth-century art, he also practiced art criticism in a creative way, and was an organiser of cultural activities – a sympathetic observer of many developments in modern art. The methodology of art history occupies a special place in his scholarzy accomplishments. In contrast to many researchers, who dealt with history and its methods as a humanistic discipline, Porebski developer his own methodology of art research, which he formed under the strong infl uence of methods borrowed from information theory, semiotics, anthropology and structural sociology. As the author of numerous methodological studies, later collected in a large volume entitled Art and Information, he tried to construct a systematic approach to art, beginning with a semiotic (iconic) understanding of the work, incorporated in the system of semiotic and social communication. One of Porebski’s main objectives was to discover a koncept of art as communication, which would allow for a comprehensive view of the story of art, with room for the particular role of moments of structural breakthrough (the crises – the transgressions), modelled on the basis of the achievements of structural anthropology and modern interpretations of myth and times of festivity, operating at different levels in societies characterised by different attitudes to painting, which can nonetheless be encompassed in repetitive patterns and formulas. In giving the work a three-layered structure, centred on the original idea of “morphisms”, Porebski tried to capture the changing functions of art within the framework of the variants of specifi c stylistic codes and communication systems. At the same time, as a methodologist, Porebski was well aware of the restrictions faced by information and semiotic theories when applied to artistic (more generally, visual) images, which build symbolic systems by expressing something and pointing at themselves. Porebski continued to develop his methodology of art research, on the one hand fascinated by the possibilities of adding the rigours of accuracy to it, as is the case with linguistic and semiotic studies, and on the other shaping his decisions under the strong spell of modernity, both on an ideological as well as artistic level.

Opis:
The scholarly output of Wiesław Juszczak (1932–2021) is very diverse with regard to both the range of topics and the conceptual approaches to particular issues; yet it is possible to discern in it certain permanent themes, a desire to revisit fundamental problems, such as the role of the imagination in historical cognition and artistic creativity, the origins of art and of its cognitive pursuits, or the significance of the relationship between the word and the image (in ecphrasis, in art criticism). Those issues he approached sometimes in articles of a methodological nature, sometimes in incomparable interpretations of particular artworks and artists, and sometimes – with time, increasingly frequently – in essayistic texts that had the quality of philosophical deliberations. Wiesław Juszczak’s scholarly achievements allow us to see him as a historian and at the same time a philosopher of art, endowed with an originality of thought and a masterful form of its expression, an exceptional authority on the art of European Romanticism and Symbolism, a tireless hunter for the beginnings of artistic creation in the culture of archaic Greece, and a humanist worthy of this name in the highest degree.

Opis:
The text constitutes an attempt to look at the potential sources from which originates the hermeneutics of the image, one of the most important methodological proposals in contemporary art history, or even within the broadly understood science of the image. In addition to certain traditions in the study of art, the hermeneutics of the image referred, in a more or less overt manner, to various philosophical concepts from within the philosophy of art, taking them as the foundation for, among others, its distinctive concept of the ontology of an artwork, the ways of recognising and describing it, as well as the aims of interpreting and elucidating the image. The article also draws attention to the paradoxical fact of the hermeneutic philosophy of the image being rooted in the currents of Romantic art theory but simultaneously displaying a critical approach to the Romantic legacy.

Opis:
The issue of the relationship between art history, its analytical procedures and critical judgements, and the attitude of art historians to modern art has long been a problem discussed when we refer, for example, to scholars such as Riegl, Wölfflin, and, for obvious reasons, Justi or Sedlmayr. Although many art historians reacted very negatively to their own contemporary artistic phenomena, of which Justi’s aversion to Impressionism was perhaps the most notable example, the issue is by no means clear-cut. It is important to note here that even critical remarks made against distinct phenomena in modern art need not be tantamount to a condemnation of “modernity”. Edgar Wind, an outstanding methodologist of science and an excellent art historian of the 18th century and the Renaissance, seems to be a particularly interesting example here. Criticising various manifestations of the cult of “pure form”, and associating them with the influence of Romantic “autonomy” of art creation and certain concepts from the sphere of art history as a discipline, Wind was at the same time a very insightful observer of contemporary art, valuing selected artists highly. This issue was presented in detail by Ben Thomas in his recently published book on Wind’s attitude to contemporary art, drawing on Wind’s previously unpublished and unknown materials. The present text is an attempt at a broader, problematising discussion of this issue on the basis of reading Ben Thomas’s book, the publication of which should be regarded as an important event in the field of research into the history of art, history of art history, and the influence exerted by art history as a practice and as a discipline on the problem of esteeming modern art.

ART HISTORY
PIWOCKI
Opis:
Ksawery Piwocki (1901-1974), whose scholarly activities occurred during a particularly difficult period in our history, 1935-1970, was one of the most interesting Polish art historians and organizers of academic life. In his work, he combined an interest in methodology (for instance, as an expert on the concepts of Alois Riegl, and on all the complexities of the nearly century-old dispute about its proper interpretation), with many years of research on non-professional artists, areas of artistic creativity which remained partly on the margins of traditional art history and partly in the ‘no man's land’ of such disciplines as art history, ethnography and cultural anthropology. Armed with a thorough knowledge of methodology, and starting from the fairly widespread belief in the 1920s and 1930s that the study of the art of the so-called ‘primitives’ would facilitate exploration of the principles of artistic development in general, uncovering the psychological and anthropological origins of creativity, Piwocki researched ‘primitive’ art, revealing a fascinating and often surprising relationship between the proposals of modern artists and the trends of the ‘primitives’. It should be emphasized that these studies, which began even before World War II, were completely devoid of any attempt to support them with the theories of race, which was not so obvious at the time. We must not forget that Ksawery Piwocki was also a well-known organizer of academic life. He was involved in the practice of conservation, becoming an eminent expert on the theory of conservation and restoration of works of art, and greatly contributing to the increase in awareness of these issues in Poland.

Opis:
JACKOB BURCKHARDT AND THE RELIGION OF ARTMore or less since the middle of the 18th century, there appeared a conviction that the experience of a work of art, if suitably prepared and separated off from other types of experience, may, thanks to its intensity and exclusivity as well as its totality, match or even supplant a religious experience. This process of sky-high adoration of art and the apotheosis of art as the highest form of cognition, reaches out with its roots to Shaftesbury’s aesthetics; whereas thanks to Winckelmann and his successors, it became deeply rooted in the 18–19 century culture, contributing to the rise of aesthetically-tinged anthropology, if only within the concept of the so called „beautiful man” in Germany at the turn of the century (Schiller, Goethe). The myth of the religion of art, which was so readily nurtured by the Romantics, was also incorporated by them into various historiosophic conceptions as well as dreams about a perfect language of art which is able to express directly the personality of the artist and his characteristic way of cognizing the world. In the second half of the 19th century, Jacob Burckhardt, one of the most original historians of culture and art, wished to base his conception of historical cognition and a historian’s freedom, among others, on the idea of communing with works of art. And although Burckhardt seemed at times to allude to the Romantic ideas of the religion of art, in point of fact, he never accepted its fundamental assumptions. The present article indicates the ambiguity of the very idea of the „religion of art” as well as to Burckhardt’s ambivalent reactions to its consequences
