Opis:
Evaluation of insertion of a cochlear implant electrode into the cochlea includes radiological techniques: plain X-ray of the skull, cochlear projection (based on Stenvers projection), computer tomography. These methods allow generally postoperative evaluation. During surgery the insertion of the electrode is assessed based on anatomical structures and markers placed on the electrode. The measurement of the electrode impedance is also an important tool. 60 patients implanted with the Contour cochlear implant with pre-shaped electrode were examined. Age o patients: mediana 4.25 (1.5-54.5). Examination includes intraoperative impedance measurement performed in two stages: (1) after the electrode insertion, and (2) after removal of the stylet. Measurements were done in Common Ground (CG) and Monopolar 1 (MP1) stimulation modes. Measurements recorded in two modes and in 3 different parts of the cochlea (apical, middle, basal) were compared. The average difference value (before-after) was for the CG mode: 0.45 kΩ, and for the MP1 mode: 0.39 kΩ. For the CG mode the difference values were: 0.64, 0.44 and 0.28 toward apical part. For the MP1 mode the difference values were: 0.47, 0.43 and 0.27 toward apical part of the cochlea.

Opis:
An early diagnosis of the congenital disorder of hearing creates new challenges for a multidisciplinary team: paedoaudiologists, ear nose throat specialists, and speech therapists. The cross modality matching method is based on the objective and subjective techniques in the evaluation of hearing thresholds in children. The electrical response audiometry provides information about the response of the brainstem to acoustic stimulation; the behavioural audiometry gives information about the perception and central associative processes in the auditory pathway. The paediatric fitting procedure relies on solid foundations of behavioural measurement to ensure the validity of hearing aid and cochlear implant fitting. This study assessed perception of phonemes in children with the cochlear implants and possibilities of applying acoustic solutions to the audiologic evaluation. The authors have also examined the possibilities of applying digital audio processing algorithm in clinical practice. Self-developed computer controlled diagnostic stations were used and tested. Speech perception was assessed on the basis of Erber's categories. Detection, discrimination and identification tests of 5 Ling phoneme were used. The sample comprised 23 implanted children, aged 3-6 years, who received a cochlear implant when they were 18 to 30 months old. The detection thresholds, discrimination and identification scores were assessed. Tests based on phonemes aa, uu, ii, ss, and sh (5 sounds of Ling) were used. The results indicated significant correlations between pure tone audiometry results and the thresholds of phoneme detection [dB SPL]. The identification score in this group was 95-100%.

Opis:
Al-Mn alloys are often used for the production of automotive heat exchanger fins. During brazing at about 600°C, recrystallization and grain coarsening resulting in the reduction of the strength and possible buckling of the fin can occur. In order to obtain a good recrystallization resistance, the alloy should contain a dense and homogeneous distribution of second phase particles. The effect of Si and Fe addition on the recrystallization response of Al-Mn-Zr alloys direct-chill cast in the laboratory conditions and twin-roll cast in the industrial conditions was examined. Microstructure of the alloys was characterized during downstream processing. The particles were analyzed by light metallography, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and by means of electron backscattering diffraction. Computer assisted quantitative particle analysis was carried out on field emission gun-scanning electron microscope micrographs. Vickers hardness and electrical conductivity were measured at thicker sheets, while at the final gauge of 65 μm the 0.2% proof stress was evaluated. The best recrystallization resistance had twin-roll cast alloy containing 0.5 wt% Si and 0.2 wt% Fe.

Opis:
Vibratometry is a unique audiological test used in patients with bilateral profound sensori-neural hearing loss. An acoustic stimulus is presented using the bone conduction. The study comprised 15 patients with bilateral profound hearing loss with unilaterally implanted cochlear implant. Vibration detection thresholds were noted. Measurements were done at the implanted side with speech processor either switched on or switched off, as well as at the contralateral side with speech processor switched on. All the patients have perceived stimulus used for testing. The average detection thresholds of vibration stimulus and average thresholds in bone conduction using tonal stimulus have shown better perception of vibration delivered by bone conduction than tonal stimulus. The average detection threshold of vibration stimulus in the implanted ear showed significantly better results in case of speech processor switched on. Patients perceived high frequency stimuli during vibratometry testing despite of no reaction to tonal stimulation during bone conduction test. Vibration could be a supplementary stimulation in patients with bilateral perceptive profound hearing loss.

Opis:
The presented work deals with the oxidation resistance of spark plasma sintered and thermally sprayed FeAl-based intermetallics. Gas-atomized binary single phase Fe-43(at.%)Al and dual phase Fe-55(at.%)Al powders were used for spark plasma sintering and/or thermal spraying. Coatings were deposited by two different plasma spray technologies - gas and water stabilized plasma guns. The prepared samples were exposed to oxidation in artificial air at 700°C. The mass gain was measured during oxidation at 700C up to 1000 h. Microstructures, phase and chemical compositions of the formed scales were characterized after the exposition by means of scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy).

Opis:
Self-propagating high-temperature synthesis is a simple and efficient method for the synthesis of various compounds including ceramics and intermetallics. In this process, the compressed mixture of elemental or master alloy powders is ignited or heated to initiate the exothermic reactions leading to the formation of desired compounds. In order to control the process efficiently, the effect of several important parameters has to be determined in each applied alloy system. Previous results showed that those parameters are: initiation temperature, process duration, pressure used for compression and heating rate. This paper is devoted to the description and explanation of the effect of the heating rate on the formation of intermetallics during self-propagating high-temperature synthesis in Fe-Al and Ni-Ti systems. Differential thermal analysis of compressed powder mixtures under various heating conditions and microstructure observation of samples prepared by various heating rates using electric resistance heating and spark plasma sintering were carried out. The effect of heating rates on the formations of intermetallics in studied systems is discussed in this paper.

Opis:
The aim of the study was the evaluation of cadmium effects on the activity of antioxidant enzymes in rat hepatocytes. The studies were conducted with isolated rat hepatocytes incubated for 1 or 2 hours in a modified (deprived of carbonates with phosphates) Williams’ E medium (MWE) in the presence of cadmium chloride (25, 50 and 200 μM). Hepatocytes incubated in the MWE medium without cadmium chloride were used as a control. The application of the modified Williams’ E medium allowed for the appearance of cadmium compounds in a soluble form that is indispensable for suitable estimation of its toxic action. There were evaluated markers of the oxidative stress such as: concentration of thiobarbiturate reactive substances (TBARS) – proportional to the level of lipid peroxidation, concentration of reduced glutathione (GSH), and the activity of antioxidant enzymes, including superoxide dismutase (SOD1 and SOD2), catalase (CAT), total glutathione peroxidase (GSHPx), selenium – dependent glutathione peroxidase (SeGSHPx), glutathione transferase (GST) and glutathione reductase (GSHR). Alterations of antioxidant enzymes activity, the level of TBARS and GSH in isolated rat hepatocytes caused by cadmium in vitro, were shown to depend on the concentration and time of exposure of cells to this metal. The increased level of TBARS and GSH was observed as well as changes in the activity of antioxidant enzymes. The activity of SOD isoenzymes and CAT was increased, whereas GSHPx and GST were decreased. These results indicate that cadmium induces oxidative stress followed by alterations in the cellular antioxidant enzyme system in isolated rat hepatocytes.
