Opis:
The magnetoelectric effect in multiferroic materials has been widely studied for its fundamental interest and practical applications. The magnetoelectric effect observed for single phase materials like Cr2O3, BiFeO3, and Pb(Fe0.5Nb0.5)O3 is usually small. A much larger effect can be obtained in composites consisting of magnetostrictive and piezoelectric phases. This paper investigates the magnetoelectric effect of a multilayer (laminated) structure consisting of 6 nickel ferrite and 7 PFN relaxor layers. It describes the synthesis and tape casting process for Ni0.3Zn0.5Cu0.08Fe2O4 ferrite and relaxor PbFe0.5Nb0.5O3 (PFN). Magnetic hysteresis, ZFC - FC curves and dependencies of magnetization versus temperature for PFN relaxor and magnetoelectric composite were measured with a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) in an applied magnetic field up to 85 kOe at a temperature range of 10 – 400 K. Magnetoelectric effect at room temperature was investigated as a function of a static magnetic field (0.3 - 6.5 kOe) and the frequency of sinusoidal magnetic field (0.01 - 6.5 kHz). At lower magnetic field, the magnetoelectric coefficient increases slightly before reaching a maximum and then decreases. The magnetoelectric coefficient aME increases continuously as the frequency is raised, although this increase is less pronounced in the 1-6.5 kHz range. Maximum values of the magnetoelectric coefficient attained for the layered composites exceed about 50 mV/(Oe cm).

Opis:
The $Er_{2-x}R_{x}Fe_{14}C$ (R=Gd, Pr) polycrystalline compounds have been synthesized and investigated with $\text{}^{57}Fe$ Mössbauer spectroscopy and magnetic measurements. The spin reorientation phenomena were studied extensively by narrow step temperature scanning in the neighborhood of the spin reorientation temperature. Obtained Mössbauer spectra were analyzed using a procedure of simultaneous fitting and the transmission integral approach. Consistent description of Mössbauer spectra were obtained, temperature and composition dependencies of hyperfine interaction parameters and subspectra contributions were derived from fits and the transition temperatures were determined for all the compounds studied. Initial magnetization versus temperature measurements (in zero and non-zero external field) for $Er_{2-x}Gd_{x}Fe_{14}C$ compounds allowed to establish the temperature regions of reorientation, change of magnetization value during the transition process. The results obtained with different methods were analyzed and the spin arrangement diagrams were constructed. Data obtained for $Er_{2-x}Gd_{x}Fe_{14}C$ were compared with those for $Er_{2-x}Gd_{x}Fe_{14}B$ series.

X-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurements on the cobalt (iron) K edges and samarium L$\text{}_{2}$, L$\text{}_{3}$ edges of Sm$\text{}_{2}$Fe$\text{}_{17}$, Sm$\text{}_{2}$Co$\text{}_{17}$ and their interstitial hydrides and nitrides are reported. Normal absorption profiles show considerable changes upon nitriding for iron- and cobalt K edge and for samarium L$\text{}_{2}$, L$\text{}_{3}$ edges. Much weaker changes are observed upon hydriding. Similarly, significant differences of X-MCD spectra appear between the host Sm$\text{}_{2}$Fe$\text{}_{17}$ (Sm$\text{}_{2}$Co$\text{}_{17}$) and the nitrides, whereas X-MCD signals of the hydrides are similar to those of the hosts. The effects are analysed and discussed in terms of influence of interstitial atom neighbours on the Co(Fe) 4p and Sm 5d electronic bands.

Opis:
The atomic environment of Bi atoms in the Co/Cu multilayered system was studied with X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy. Experiments were carried out on a Co(1 nm)/Cu(2 nm) system with 5 and 10 repetitions of Co/Cu evaporated with very low deposition rate in ultrahigh vacuum. A very small amount of Bi (0.06 nm) was deposited on each Cu film in the system. The X-ray absorption fine structure spectra were measured at the $BiL_3$ edge in the X-ray absorption near-edge structure and extended X-ray absorption fine structure ranges at the Beamline X1 of HASYLAB/DESY synchrotron laboratory in Hamburg. The experimental data showed different local neighbourhood of Bi, depending on the number of Co/Cu bilayer repetitions. The results are discussed in terms of the location and segregation of the Bi atoms as well as its possible oxidation ways.

Opis:
The c-axis orientation YBa₂Cu₃O_δ thin film was prepared directly on MgO substrate by the pulse laser deposition. The thickness of the film is 170 nm. The superconducting critical temperature is T_{c50%}=87.5 K and the width of superconducting transition is ΔT = 1.8 K. The temperature dependences of magnetoresistance were measured up to 90 kOe. The widths of the transition to the superconducting state versus applied magnetic field were derived and they were fitted using the formula: Δ T=CH^m +Δ T₀. The irreversibility fields as a function of temperature were obtained and fitted by the de Almeida and Thouless-like equation: H_{irr}=H_{irr0}(1-T/T_{c0})^n. The irreversibility field at the liquid nitrogen temperature was calculated and it is H_{irr}=43.8 kOe when the applied magnetic field is parallel to the c-axis.

An NMR study of polycrystalline Pr$\text{}_{0.5}$Ca$\text{}_{0.5}$Mn$\text{}_{1-x}$Ga$\text{}_{x}$O$\text{}_{3}$ (x=0 and 0.03) at 3 K is presented. Zero field spin-echo spectra of the Ga doped compound consist of an overlapping $\text{}^{69,71}$Ga signal at 74~MHz (hyperfine field of 5.3 T), a $\text{}^{55}$Mn double exchange line at 375 MHz (35.5 T) and a weak Mn$\text{}^{3+}$ signal between 400 and 550 MHz. Measurements in an applied field show a step-like increase in the double exchange line intensity, which corresponds to an increase in the amount of the ferromagnetic metallic phase. This coincides with a step-like feature in the bulk magnetization measurements. The effect is similar to that in the previous field dependent $\text{}^{55}$Mn NMR measurements of Pr$\text{}_{0.67}$Ca $\text{}_{0.33}$MnO$\text{}_{3}$. At the demagnetized and remanent state, a variation of spin- spin relaxation time, T$\text{}_{2}$, across the $\text{}^{55}$Mn line, due to the Suhl-Nakamura interaction is observed, which suggests that the ferromagnetic metallic double exchange regions, at liquid helium temperatures, are at least 4 nm in size.

The spin-echo spectra measured at 4.2 K and zero field consist of a double exchange line corresponding to the ferromagnetic metallic regions. The line intensity is more than an order of magnitude lower for the $\text{}^{18}$O compound, which indicates an order of magnitude lower content of the ferromagnetic metallic phase in this compound. The frequency dependence of the spin-spin relaxation time T$\text{}_{2}$ shows a pronounced minimum at the center of the double exchange line of both compounds due to the Suhl-Nakamura interaction, which indicates that the ferromagnetic metallic regions are at least 10~nm in size. The results are discussed in terms of the influence of oxygen isotopic substitution on phase segregation.

Opis:
The results of a combined NMR, X-ray absorption spectroscopy and X-ray magnetic cirrcular dichroism study of the AA'FeMoO$\text{}_{6}$ and AA'FeReO$\text{}_{6}$ double perovskites are presented. They revealed a dependence of electronic and magnetic properties, including a d-electron transfer between Fe and Mo sites, on the structural tolerance factor. The maximum value of the 4d Mo electron occupation and the corresponding Mo moment is obtained for the tolerance factor of unity. This corresponds to the maximum strength of the magnetic interaction and, respectively, to the Curie temperature. The dominant T$\text{}^{5}\text{}^{/}\text{}^{2}$ type temperature dependence of the Mo hyperfine field reveals the half-metallicity of the AA'FeMoO$\text{}_{6}$ compounds. Antisite defects and antiphase boundaries have been identified in NMR measurements and the strength of their magnetic coupling have been determined. A considerable orbital contribution to the Re and Fe magnetic moments were found in the NMR and X-MCD measurements on the AA'FeReO$\text{}_{6}$ compounds. Its magnitude decreases with increasing structural tolerance factor and is correlated with their magnetic anisotropy.

NMR signals are observed at 55-100 MHz for the main line and 30-55 MHz for low-frequency satellite. The main line and the satellite are attributed to the ideal and defect positions of Mo atoms. La and vacancy doping introduce more defects, however, increasing the Fe/Mo ratio decreases the amount of defect Mo sites. La doping causes a satellite pattern at the high frequency side of the spectrum, which is related to different numbers of the La next neighbours. The effect is attributed to an increase in the electron density and the corresponding magnetic moment at the adjacent Mo sites and reveals a local character of the electron doping.
