- The paper concerns the characteristics and frequency of air masses in Poznan and Warsaw in period of 2000-2014 (fig. 1). Air masses were specified on the basis of measured values of selected meteorological variables in accordance with Spatial Synoptic Classification (SSC). Polar mass was the coldest and tropical mass was the warmest. Temperature of moderate mass was slightly higher than in the transitional days. The dry type masses were warmer and had higher atmospheric pressure (except polar mass), but lower cloudiness and wind speed than moist type masses. The most common air mass in Warsaw and Poznań was MM (31% and 37%, respectively) and less frequently DM (approximately 18% and 16%). The percentage of MP air mass was about 13% in Warsaw and 10% in Poznan (in the SSC the polar mass corresponds to the arctic mass in the geographical air masses classification and the moderate air mass corresponds to the polar mass). In case of DP it was 10 and 6%, respectively. MT air mass was almost twice as common in Poznan (12%) than in Warsaw (7%), but contribution of DT air mass in both cities was on the similar level (6%). MT+ air mass was almost twice as common in Poznan (4%) than in Warsaw (2%). Transitional situations were more frequent in Warsaw (11%) than in Poznan (7%). In about 2% of cases in both cities the mass of air has not been determined.
