Opis:
Introduction and objective: The risk of development colon cancer (CC) is increased significantly among patients with the type 2 diabetes (T2DM). A mechanism responsible for the higher prevalence of CC among diabetic patients may be associated with the immunity system. The aim of this study is to point out the differences in the immunity state in terms of interleukin 2 level among patients with T2DM suffering from CC, and patients without these diseases Material and Methods: 79 patients were included the tests, divided into 4 groups: Group 1–23 people with T2DM, Group 2–23 people with large intestine CC, Group 3–10 people with large CC and T2DM, and Group 4–23 people without T2DM or CC. Each patient had a colonoscopy and those with cancer were confirmed in a histopathological examination. Laboratory measurements included fasting glucose, insulin, C-peptide. The concentration of interleukin-2 in serum was determined with the immunoenzymatic (ELISA) method. Results: The results obtained showed that in patients with T2DM and CC the concentration of interleukin-2 was statistically higher than in the other groups.(4.21±1.61 pg/ml vs. Group 1 -1.64±0.44 pg/ml, Group 2–1.54±0.21 pg/ml, and Group 4–1.70±0.36 pg/ml; p<0.05). Insulin levels, C-peptide and HOMA-IR did not differ significantly between groups, but a tendency was observed to higher values of HOMA-IR and insulin levels in the groups with T2DM alone and T2DM with concomitant CC. Conclusions: The data show differences in the immunity state of patients with T2DM and CC, compared with people without those two diseases. Elevated level of interleukin 2 found in this group, after confirmation in other studies with more patients, could be used as a marker of an increased risk of CC in people with T2DM

Opis:
Objectives Monitoring tobacco use is one of the most important tobacco control interventions recommended by the World Health Organization. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of cigarette smoking, e-cigarette use, and heated tobacco use in a nationwide sample of adults in Poland, as well as to identify factors associated with smoking, e-cigarette use, and heated tobacco use. Material and Methods This nationwide crosssectional survey was carried out in February 2–4, 2024 using the computer-assisted web interviewing method. The study questionnaire included 17 closed questions on smoking, e-cigarette use, and heated tobacco use. A sample of 1080 adults was selected using a non-probability quota sampling method. Results Data were collected from 1080 adults, age M±SD 48.4±15.5 years, 53% females. Past 30-day smoking was declared by 30.4% of adults in Poland, including 24.5% of daily smokers. Ever e-cigarette use was declared by 33% of respondents, and 20.6% had ever tried heated tobacco. Past 30-day e-cigarette use was declared by 15.2% of adults, wherein 5.9% were daily e-cigarette users. Past 30-day heated tobacco use was declared by 10.9% of respondents, wherein 4.9% were daily heated tobacco users. One-tenth of adults were dual users (cigarette and e-cigarette or heated tobacco), and 6.5% were past 30-day triple users. Age 40–59 years, having less than higher education, and bad economic status were significantly associated with daily smoking (p < 0.05). Age 18–39 years, having less than higher education, and active occupational status (employment/ self-employment) were associated with daily e-cigarette use (p < 0.05). Age 18–39 years and active occupational status were associated with daily heated tobacco use (p < 0.05). Conclusions This study provides comprehensive epidemiological data on the current prevalence of smoking, e-cigarette use, and heated tobacco use. The introduction of e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products evoked changes in social behaviors related to nicotine use.

Opis:
Sildenafil is a selective type 5 phosphodiesterase (PDE5) inhibitor, commonly used in the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED) and pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). The results of recent studies suggest that this drug modulates function of the immune system. However, only few studies were performed in humans. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the ability of sildenafil to regulate the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines including tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), interleukin (IL)-1β and IL-6 in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from healthy men. Phorbol myristate acetate (PMA) - stimulated and unstimulated PBMCs from 16 participants were cultured in the absence or presence of sildenafil (400 ng/ml and 4 µg/ml). TNF-α, IL-1β and IL-6 concentrations in culture supernatants were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Cell viability was assessed by trypan blue staining. Sildenafil at a concentration of 400 ng/ml significantly increased TNF-α production in stimulated PBMCs (p<0.05) but had no effects on IL-1β and IL-6. The drug did not affect PBMCs viability. This is the first report describing such effects of sildenafil in humans.

Opis:
Skuteczność barierową opracowanych tkanin i kontrolnej tkaniny bawełnianej, przed alergenem kurzu i roztoczy kurzu domowego Der p 1, badano zgodnie z wcześniej opisaną i opatentowaną metodą.[1,2]. Wyniki: Zbadano łącznie sześć rodzajów tkanin powlekanych i wybrano jedną o najlepszych właściwościach, zapobiegających przenikaniu kurzu i Der p 1. Ten opracowany materiał (nazwany Argo Plus) charakteryzował się wysoką skutecznością barierową wobec alergenu Der p 1 (0,15 % przepuszczalności ) oraz przepuszczalnością pary wodnej i powietrza. Po 20 cyklach prania tkanina Argo Plus zachowała swoją funkcję barierową. Wniosek: Stosując naszą oryginalną metodę badania tkanin barierowych, mogliśmy wybrać materiał włókienniczy o optymalnych właściwościach barierowych, który można wykorzystać do produkcji pokrowców na pościel i materace - barierowych wobec alergernów roztoczy kurzu domowego.
Background: Mite allergens can easily accumulate in mattresses and on textile surfaces, mainly on linen. Approved strategies for reducing exposure to dust mite allergens include the use of covers from certified barrier fabric. Covers may significantly increase the comfort and safety of nighttime sleep and prevent the occurrence of exacerbations of atopic allergies and asthma. The aim of this study was to evaluate the allergen-blocking effectiveness of newly developed barrier fabrics designed for antiallergic covers. Methods: The barrier fabrics made of polyester/cotton woven structure with one-sided polymer coating were developed and manufactured by the Łukasiewicz-Textile Research Institute. Barrier effectiveness of designed fabrics and control cotton woven fabric against dust and house dust mite allergen Der p 1 was tested according to the previously described and patent method.[1,2]. In brief, house dust samples were sucked onto the tested textile material with a vacuum cleaner and the allergen was collected on filters. Following a filter extraction, the mite allergen Der p 1 concentration was determined with commercial ELISA method. Barrier effectiveness was defined as the % of permeability of tested fabrics in relation to control cotton fabric. Results: A total of six fabrics types were tested and the one with the best performance in preventing dust and Der p 1 penetration was chosen. This developed textile material (named Argo Plus) was characterized by a high barrier effectiveness against Der p 1 allergen (0,15 % permeability), but at the same time had sufficient permeability to the air and water vapor. When subjected to 20 washing cycles the Argo Plus fabric retained its barrier function. Conclusion: Using our original method for barrier fabrics testing, we were able to select a textile material with optimal barrier characteristics, which may be used to manufacture mattress covers.

Opis:
Aim: Technologies involved in roasting coffee beans, as well as the methods used to prepare infusions, vary according to culture, and contribute to differences in the concentration of elements in the drink. Materials and Methods: Concentrations of six elements: manganese (Mn), cobalt (Co), nickel (Ni), chrome (Cr), silver (Ag) and lead (Pb) were investigated in coffee infusions from eleven samples of coffee, roasted and purchased in four countries: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Lebanon and Poland. Metal concentrations were determined using an induction coupled plasma technique in combination with mass spectrometry (ICP-MS, Perkin Elmer) which measures total metal (ionic and non-ionic) content. Results: Metal intake estimated for individual countries (in the respective order; mean consumption per person per year) was as follows: Mn: 26.8-33.1, 28.3-29.5, 29.7, 12.6-18.9 mg; Co: 0.33-0.48, 0.42-0.35, 0.32, 0.12-0.17 mg; Ni: 3.83-5.68, 4.85-5.51, 4.04, 2.06-2.24 mg; Cr: 0.17-0.41, 0.21-0.47, 0.17, 0.09-0.28 mg; Ag: 0.16-1.13, 0.26-0.70, 0.61, 0.33-1.54 mg, Pb: 4.76-7.56, 3.59-5.13, 3.33, 1.48-2.43 mg. Conclusions: This finding gives new data for Mn, Co, Ni, Cr, and Ag intake from coffee , and suggests that the amounts are negligible. However, the data for Pb consumption in heavy drinkers, for example in Bosnia and Herzegovina, indicate that Pb intake from coffee may contribute to the disease burden. The high lead level in some coffees suggests the need for a more precise control of coffee contamination.

Background: Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) is one of the most common genetic myocardial diseases. Transthoracic echocardiography which includes speckle tracking technique is tool for HCM diagnosis and monitoring the course of the disease. The aim of this study was to compare clinical and echocardiographic parameters in HCM patients older and younger than 60 years old (yo). Material and methods: We prospectively enrolled 53 HCM patients, who were divided into two groups: younger and older than 60 yo. Clinical parameters, standard echocardiographic indices, as well as strain parameters were assessed and compared between the groups. Results: The older subgroup was characterized by a higher prevalence of coronary artery disease. In the younger subgroup the incidence of atrial fibrillation was quite high, which occurs far more often than in the general population. Echocardiographic analysis showed worse diastolic function in older, as well as lower volume of the LV. The global longitudinal strain was worse in <60 patients. The 3D strain parameters differed significantly between the groups: the area and radial strains were worse in younger patients. Conclusions: HCM patients older and younger than 60 yo differ significantly in terms of clinical and echocardiographic parameters.
