Opis:
The article presents the Polish religious writing of the Middle Ages and Renaissance as an expression of correspondence between the word and image. It also demonstrates the impact of European graphics, including Albrecht Dürer’s woodcuts, upon Polish religious works of the period (such as the works by Pseudo-Bonaventura in his rendering of Baltazar Opec’s Żywot Pana Jezu Krysta and Jan Sandecki’s Historie biblijne or Rozmyślania dominikańskie. The article also emphasizes that it was Dürer who paved the way for the book illustration, thus turning woodcuts into an art form in their own right. The fifteenth century was a watershed in book culture. As new illustration techniques at the turn of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries encouraged the growth of illustrated printed books, the codex became obsolete.

The purpose of this article is to present, based on the second part of the „Manual of Spiritual Exercise” (Elementarzyk ćwiczenia duchownego, Kraków 1626) by Mikołaj of Mościska (1559–1632), the role of stylistic literary devices in the description of meditative mechanisms and the results of this experience — the inner transformation of Man, and the experience of closeness to and unification with God. The author will also draw attention to the significance of senses in the cognitive process, and consequently imagination, enabling one to picture the images contained in metaphors. The category of perceptibility, which is accentuated in the text, served to present objects and phenomena in a “realistic” manner. Thus, focus will be placed on the imaging tools through which the 17th century author attempted to draw metaphysical matters closer to the reader’s senses.

The article points to a relationship between Mikołaj Mieleszko’s "Pious Sighs" ("Nabożne westchnienia"; 1657) and the ascetic-mystical literature of the 17th century. This work particularly shows the meditative character of Mieleszko’s emblems. It also presents the division of the work into three books introduced by Mieleszko, which can be viewed in the context of the model of the three-stage mystical way to God (via purgativa, via illuminativa, via unitiva), employed by St. Ignatius of Loyola but known already by Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite and fully expressed by St. Bonaventure. The article also discusses the participation of human faculties in the emblems: memory, intellect, will, imagination, and feelings, which are so important in the act of meditation. Referring to the method of applying senses (applicatio sensuum), originating from the Church tradition (Origen, St. Bonaventure) and taken over by St. Ignatius of Loyola, the work emphasizes Mieleszko’s need to apply it in his emblems. Moreover, the article focuses on the influence of Kasper Drużbicki’s and St. Teresa of Ávila’s works visible in Mieleszko’s poems. The themes, allegories, symbols and metaphors of the ascetic-mystical literature reverberate in the emblems of the Baroque poet.

The subject of this article is the presentation of issues futility and transience found in the manuscript of Medytacje (“Meditations”) by Teresa Petrycówna (about 1629-1700), a Norbertine nun in the Krakow monastery in Zwierzyniec. The first part of the ar - ticle gives the story of the Norbertine monastery in Zwierzyniec, presents characte- ristics of the congregation, and describes the figure and works of Teresa Petrycówna. Attention is also drawn to the inspiration and interpretive contexts present in her re- flections. The core part of the paper shows, based on the example of Petrycówna’s thought, that the idea of futility and transience of the world and the misery of the human condition also guided the Krakow Norbertine. The vanitative topoi used by her, as well as metaphors and comparisons, are an expression of general ideas abo- ut temporality. The theme of mortality present in these meditations was intended to encourage nuns to proper conduct during their earthly pilgrimage.
Tematem artykułu jest przedstawienie problematyki marności i przemijalności występującej w rękopiśmiennych Medytacjach Teresy Petrycówny (ok. 1629–1700), norbertanki krakowskiego klasztoru na Zwierzyńcu. We wstępnej części artykułu przybliża się m.in. historię klasztoru Norbertanek na Zwierzyńcu, przedstawia charakterystyczne cechy duchowości zgromadzenia, prezentuje sylwetkę oraz rękopiśmienną twórczość Teresy Petrycówny. Zwraca się również uwagę na inspiracje i konteksty interpretacyjne obecne w rozmyślaniach. W zasadniczej części artykułu pokazuje się na przykładzie rozmyślań Petrycówny, że idea marności, przemijalności świata oraz nędzy kondycji ludzkiej przyświecała również krakowskiej norbertance. Wykorzystane przez nią wanitatywne toposy, metafory oraz porównania służą wyrażeniu ogólnej myśli o doczesności. Występująca w medytacjach myśl o kresie życia doczesnego miała za zadanie zachęcić zakonnice do właściwego postępowania podczas ziemskiej peregrynacji.

The theme of the article is to present the ancient space in the epithalamium by Stanislaus Theodore Piotrkowczyk, entitled Wedding Act at the Never-Ever Fading Mount Carmel, written on the occasion of the “spiritual marriage” of the poet’s sister, Teresa Anne of St. Joseph. The article draws attention to the construction of the work, which contain characteristics of panegyric compositional elements. An important part of epithalamium is praising the virtues of the nun, who brought her attitude to gather priceless value. Visualizations of the message contained in the epithalamium about the desire to reject the beauties of the world for monastic life, in which to facilitate the improvement of the internal. Above all, the article shows Piotrkowczyk’s references to ancient tradition. These references proved that the religious themes can be presented, drawing not only from Christianity, but also from ancient heritage. Furthermore, these references also testified about the erudition of the author and of his interest in history and tradition of European culture.

This article presents the image of a spiritual wedding between soul-Bride and Divine Bridegroom which is featured in anonymous meditations from the XVII century. They are bunched in manuscript form and stored in the archives of the Sisters of St. Norbert’s Order in Cracow. Therefore, it is proper to make the thesis that the author of this manuscript belonged to this abbey. The primary origin of these meditations is The Song of Songs which shows the special way mystics merge with God. This article also reveals meditations about ”spiritual marriage” that contain visible influences of the Fathers of Church and Żywoty świętych of Piotr Skarga. All these influences are evident not only about the authoress erudition but most of all about her need of strong effect, by means of suggestive images of figures, for the attitude of practitioners of meditations. With the aid of the idea of mutual love between Divine Bridegroom and human being-Bride, meditations were presented standing before God demanding from man spiritual transformation and pose of the human being who desires to internally change yourself for Him.

This article presents the literary accomplishments of Polish nuns in the 17th and 18th centuries. These cloistered writings experienced their height of development at The Order of the Carmelite Nuns in Cracow. Literature was also a pursuit of the female Benedictines of the Chełmno congregation, the female Bernardines, Poor Clares, Sisters of St. Norbert’s Order, and Sisters of the Visitation. The nuns dealt in the writing of chronicles autobiographies, prayers, conferences, spiritual songs, and other religious works. In addition to their literary pursuits, the Sisters of the Visitation also were concerned with translation activities and both the Benedictine nuns and Sisters of the Visitation were active in the field of publishing. The Polish female orders were not only a place of spiritual contemplation, prayers, and worship but also a budding environment for the literary life.

The chosen meditations will highlight not only Petrycówna’s individual style but also will present references to The Bible (mostly Songs of the Songs and Book of Psalms) as well as the works of Doctors and Fathers of the Church (mainly the influences of St. Augustine). It will also focus on the creative consciousness and didactic functions of her meditations which were in-tended by the author as a moral renovation for mankind and provide for greater reli-giousness.

The article presents the conceit in the Polish baroque sermon Pszczółka w bursztynie [A Bee in Amber] of a Bernardine Franciszek Sitański. In the sermon the author presents the figure of St. Dorothy; he also draws attention to the virtues of Dorota Kątska, who was the abbess of St. Norbert’s Order in Zwierzyniec (near Cracow) in the 17th century, and most of all he praises the monastic way of life. Biblical and hagiographic arguments, a source of inspiration for the author as an effective means of persuasion, appeal to the imagination of the audience. Metaphors, analogies and comparisons in the sermon prove that Pszczółka w bursztynie is based upon the conceit. By using the arguments Sitański was trying not only to move the recipients, but mainly to persuade them to cultivate virtues presented by Christian heroines.

It also presents the division of the work into three books introduced by Mieleszko, which can be referred to the model of a three-stage mystical way to God (via purgativa, via illuminativa, via unitiva), used by St. Ignatius of Loyola (but knowing by Pseudo-Dionysius The Areopagite and fully expressed by St. Bonaventure). Moreover, it discusses the participation of human faculties in the emblems: memory, intellect, will, imagination, and feelings, which are so important for the act of meditation. Above all, emphasis is put on the goal of the reflections presented by Mieleszko in the subscriptio; they were supposed to touch the soul and convince one to a spiritual transformation. They were, therefore, just like meditations, a way of achieving inner growth.

This article presents an analysis of two meditative lectures (poetic songs) about God’s love which appeared in Kasper Twardowski’s poem entitled Pochodnia miłości Bożej z piącią strzał ognistych, the shorter First Song delivered by Mary Mother of God and the longer Fifth Song presented by Mary Magdalene. In both of these poetic lectures, the poet showed the power of God’s love to human beings and man’s pursuit of the mystic union with The Creator. Twardowski’s poem, which was classified as meditative literature, so popular in Baroque, was based on the art of meditation and the ideas of Ignatius of Loyola. The poem is regarded as autobiographical and written with didactic objectives. The author probably thought that his personal internal history deserved propagating and his spiritual conversion will offer readers a specific exemplum which will encourage imitating virtue.

The subject of this article is to discuss the penetration of influences of Spanish mysticism, in particular, the works of Saint Teresa of Ávila, on the literature and culture of the Polish Baroque. The intercultural influence of Spanish mysticism on Polish artists is reflected in the translations of the writings of Saint Teresa of Ávila. The considerations focus on the influence of the mysticism of Saint Teresa on mystical autobiographies and anonymous poetry of Carmelite nuns from Krakow from the 17th and 18th centuries. The reflection also covers the centres of the veneration of the saint in Poland, in services and prayer books, and her popularisation through art. Mystical influences are also visible in the poetry of the 17th and 18th centuries, including poetry by Kasper Twardowski, Sebastian Grabowiecki, Stanisław Grochowski, Mikołaj Mieleszko, Zbigniew Morsztyn, Maciej Kazimierz Sarbiewski, Elżbieta Drużbacka, and Konstancja Benisławska. The Polish-Spanish ties situate the research issues undertaken in a comparative context, without which the studies on post-Tridentine spirituality would not have produced real achievements.

This article presents Catholic religious culture in Poland in post-Tridentine era. It takes into account one of the manifestations of change taking place at the time, namely a dynamic development of male and female religious orders. The article shows the connection between the intensification of religious life and the development of ascetic and mystical theology resulting from the general renewal of Catholic theology. The influence of the Jesuits on the spirituality of female orders as well as their role in introducing the practice of methodical mental prayer is highlighted. The impact of Spanish spirituality on Polish religious life after the Council of Trent is also emphasised, with special attention drawn to Saint Ignatius of Loyola and the Jesuits, Saint John of the Cross and the Discalced Carmelites, Saint Theresa of Ávila and her Discalced Carmelite nuns, Louis of Granada with the Dominicans, and Saint Peter of Alcántara, one of the founders of the Franciscan Friars of the Strict Observance. Polish Catholic religious literature of the post-Tridentine era is also reflected upon, including ascetic and mystical writings adopted from Italian and Spanish religious literature.
Artykuł dotyczy zagadnienia katolickiej kultury religijnej w potrydenckiej Rzeczypospolitej. Uwagę skoncentrowano na jednym z przejawów zmian zachodzących w okresie potrydenckim — dynamicznym rozwoju klasztorów gałęzi męskiej i żeńskiej. Pokazano, że szczytem odnowy i pogłębienia życia religijnego w okresie potrydenckim był rozwój teologii ascetyczno-mistycznej, pozostający w związku z odnową teologii. Omówiony został wpływ jezuitów, którzy wprowadzili do zakonów modlitwę zmetodyzowaną, na duchowość żeńskich klasztorów. Naświetlono, że odradzająca się od zakończenia Soboru Trydenckiego do połowy XVII wieku duchowość katolicka w Polsce znalazła się przede wszystkim pod wpływem szkoły hiszpańskiej, w której aktywnością odznaczali się jezuici, ze św. Ignacym Loyolą na czele, karmelici bosi zreformowani przez św. Jana od Krzyża, karmelitanki bose zreformowane przez św. Teresę z Ávili, dominikanin Ludwik z Granady oraz św. Piotr z Alkantary, dający początek reformatom. Refleksją objęta została także katolicka literatura religijna doby potrydenckiej, między innymi dzieła ascetyczno-mistyczne, przyswojone głównie z włoskiego i hiszpańskiego piśmiennictwa.

Teresa z Avila (Marianna Marchocka and St. Theresa of Avila) (2009); Perswazja w wybranych medytacjach siedemnastowiecznych z klasztoru norbertanek na Zwierzyńcu (Persuasion in Selected 17th-Century Meditations from the Norbertine Monastery in Zwierzyniec) (2016). Co-editor of volumes of collected essays: Piśmiennictwo zakonne w dobie staropolskiej (Religious Writing in Old Poland) (2013) and Piotr Skarga — w czterechsetlecie śmierci (Piotr Skarga — on the 400th Anniversary of His Death) (2013). Author of works published in numerous conference proceedings and special volumes. Artykuł dotyczy polskiej religijności i pobożności doby potrydenckiej, łączącej nova et vetera — elementy odziedziczone po wiekach dawnych oraz zupełnie nowe. Religijność tamtego okresu z jednej strony opierała się na dziedzictwie późnego średniowiecza, z drugiej zaś — wprowadziła elementy nowej pobożności, rozbudowała pewne formy kultu. Artykuł rejestruje różne formy kultu Męki Pańskiej, obrzędowość kalwaryjską, praktyki ascetyczne, pobożność maryjną i obszar hagiografii. Koncentruje się przede wszystkim na polskich cechach religijności potrydenckiej, ale wprowadza także kontekst europejski w celu wskazania szerszych doświadczeń w tym zakresie, zwrócenia uwagi na narodowość i powszechność katolicyzmu polskiego oraz uwydatnienia dialogu z Europą.

Opis:
The aim of the article is to compare the use of two systems: traditional and Harvard, as well as to indicate the preferences of one of them. The core of the publication is a list of types of footnotes from selected articles published in pages of variously profiled scientific journals in the humanities („Pamiętnik Literacki”, „Poznańskie Studia Polonistyczne. Seria Literacka”, „Roczniki Humanistyczne”, „Ruch Literacki”, „Teksty Drugie”) and demonstrating that bibliographic descriptions in the traditional system still give take precedence. Reflections also included statements of Polish philology students of the University of Lodz (1st year full-time, first cycle) regarding the preferences of the footnote system (traditional or Harvard).
