Opis:
Emotions as abstract phenomena are not easy to verbalize. On the lexical level, they are most frequently thematized or expressed through imagery. The article aims at elucidating a rarely discussed problem of making emotions lingual employing sound phrasemes. Sounds and noises of animate as well as inanimate nature are in the centre of the cognitive explorations. The sounds and noises are metaphorically mapped on the abstract, hard-to-reach target domain of emotions. The analyses will be conducted on German and Polish phrasemes.

Opis:
In this article we will subject visual forms of entry presentation found in monolingual learner's dictionaries to critical contrastive analysis. The characteristics of dictionaries under discussion, especially those addressed to foreign users, make them an essential language learning aid. The aim of the analysis is to identify which entries are effectively illustrated to constitute an effectual support of a verbal definition, and how it is achieved. The results of the analysis will indicate the possibilities and limits of illustrating concepts in dictionaries.

Due to the complexity of the foreign language teaching and learning processes, it seems that the dominant role is played here not so much by the teacher as by well-designed coursebooks and teaching materials, elaborated on the basis of glottodidactic methods, and incorporating relevant findings of linguistic research. Therefore it could be assumed that an increase in effectiveness of the teaching process depends on a suitable choice of lexical corpus, with a particular focus on verbs as the fundamental sentence-forming elements. A detailed analysis of a verbal corpus of a modern German coursebook has been conducted to show whether the verbs included in the corpus meet students’ needs for communication. Quantitative analysis has been coupled with a qualitative examination of those lexicological elements. The results of the study have been described in terms of the valency theory with an emphasis on the syntactic and morphological distribution, as most errors made by students regard morphosyntax. The aim of the study was not to assess glottodidactic application of the coursebook but to indicate a necessity of conducting research into the frequency, usage and interconnectedness of the lexicological items of the corpus, which may help to avoid a random choice of lexical material.

Der Mensch nimmt die Außenwelt im Wesentlichen mit seinen fünf Sinnen wahr. Sehen, Hören, Tasten, Riechen und Schmecken sind die Werkzeuge unserer persönlichen, subjektiven Interpretation der Welt. Um mit anderen in einen Dialog treten zu können, versucht man, eigene Sinneswahrnehmungen zu verbalisieren. In den meisten westlichen Kulturen stellt die Versprachlichung von Geschmack und Geruch eine besondere Herausforderung dar, verglichen mit der Versprachlichung anderer Sinneseindrücke. Dies zeigt sich besonders deutlich bei der Verbalisierung der Geschmacks- und Geruchsempfindungen, die bei einer Weinverkostung auftreten. Ein in Geschmack und Aroma so komplexes Phänomen wie Wein lässt sich nämlich nur schwer in Worte fassen. Eine der Hauptaufgaben der Produkttexte, die hierfür der Analyse unterzogen werden, besteht darin, das Zielpublikum mit den olfaktorischen und gustatorischen Eigenschaften des Weins vertraut zu machen, indem eine Reihe von relevanten Weingeschmacks- und -aromaausdrücken verwendet wurden. Eine der Hauptfunktionen der Produkttexte, die das Untersuchungsmaterial dieses Artikels bilden, besteht darin, das Zielpublikum mit den aromatischen und geschmacklichen Merkmalen des Weins vertraut zu machen, und zwar durch die Verwendung einer Reihe von präzisierenden Begriffen, die häufig im übertragenen Sinne verwendet werden. Ziel dieses Artikels ist es, Beschreibungsmethoden von Weingeschmack und -aroma in produktbegleitenden Werbetexten vorzustellen. Das Fehlen eines spezifischen, ausdifferenzierten Vokabulars zur angemessenen Beschreibung von Geschmack und Geruch führt dazu, dass die gustatorischen und olfaktorischen Qualitäten von Wein häufig sinnbildlich durch kognitive Mechanismen kompensiert werden. Anhand der Analyse von Produktbeschreibungen in Weinkatalogen wird gezeigt, wie die Geschmacks-und Geruchsempfindungen von Wein trotz des Mangels an einer adäquaten Geschmacksund Aromalexik vermittelt werden können.
People essentially perceive the outside world with their five senses. Sight, hearing, touch, smell and taste are the tools of our personal, subjective interpretation of the world. In order to enter into a dialogue with others, we endeavour to verbalise our own sensory perceptions. In most Western cultures, the verbalisation of taste and smell constitutes a specific challenge compared to the verbalisation of other sensory impressions. This becomes particularly evident when verbalising the sensations of taste and smell that occur when tasting wine. A phenomenon as complex in terms of flavour and aroma as wine is difficult to put into words. One of the main functions of the product texts that form the research material for this article is to familiarise the target audience with the aromatic and gustatory characteristics of the wine, through the use of a series of defining terms that are often used in a metaphorical sense. The aim of this article is to present descriptions of wine flavour and aroma in product-accompanying advertising texts. The lack of a specific, diversified vocabulary for the accurate description of flavour and aroma means that the gustatory and olfactory qualities of wine are often symbolically compensated for by cognitive mechanisms. Based on the analysis of product descriptions in wine catalogues, it is presented how the taste and smell sensations of wine can be conveyed despite the lack of adequate taste and aroma lexis.

Opis:
Town twinning in Europe is a unique example of civic activity for the fostering of links between nations. Since the 1950s, the experience gained by the French, German and British communities has contributed to the rapid development of this form of international cooperation also in Poland, after its accession to the European Union (2004).The article shows, on the example of cooperation between the cities of Częstochowa and Pforzheim, how valuable and inspiring are the cultural activities undertaken by the city dwellers regardless of their age and profession. This cooperation demonstrates that the shared experience of culture by partner communities, especially by Poles and Germans, builds a lasting foundation for the close neighbourly relations.

Opis:
White lupin is an important source of proteins, the content of which amounts to 36–40% in its seeds. Breeding of new varieties usually takes several years. The present study aimed to shorten the breeding cycle by applying the single-seed descent technique together with in vitro culture of embryos dissected from immature seeds. The effects of temperature on embryo development were studied in indeterminate vs. determinate varieties in in vitro culture using the following temperature regimes:(1) 8 °C; (2) 16 °C in the first week, then 8 °C; (3) 20 °C in the first week, then 20/18 °C; and (4) 16 °C throughout the culture period. The embryos were cultured on the standard Murashige and Skoog medium. The observed growth rate of plantlets as well as the survival of plants ex vitro showed that at lower temperatures (8–16 °C) the plants developed slowly, but their ex vitro survival rate was higher compared to those grown at a higher temperature (20 °C). In addition, the results indicated that the in vitro embryo development rate of determinate varieties is significantly lower than that of indeterminate varieties.
