    Opis:
    The study deals with the topic of stylistic norms which have the character of tendencies in expressing particular types of messages. They are less binding than linguistic norms, although they do exist, and the creator as well as the receptor of texts are intuitively aware of them. They are shaped analogically, like linguistic norms, in the process of the creation of texts; and they are acquired in a similar way by generalization on the basis of previously known texts linked to a communicational situation. The process of the acquisition of stylistic norms is never finished because (in contrast to linguistic norms) the sources of their identification are very diverse, and their repertoire develops throughout the whole human life. In the study the author tries to present their general characterization, and consequently to characterize these norms for the traditionally mentioned primary and secondary functional styles. Even though the paper proceeds from the Czech situation and from the understanding of style and stylistics common in Czech linguistics, these are general norms applicable to the situation in various cultural environments, at least in the European cultural area.

    The present article is based on an analysis of a series ofreviews which are stylized as texts written by a person lacking higher education and living outside the cultural centre ofthe country. On the background of neutral means of expression the author frequently uses dialectisms at all levels oflanguage. The texts as a whole could be labelled as postmodern. They are full of contrasts - quotations of and allusions to texts written in standard language are intertwined with dialect. This coexistence of language varieties within a text shows that dialects, at least on certain parts ofthe territory on which Czech is spoken, still have the potential to be used in texts ofthis kind. The dialectisms, as less formal means of expression, enable the author to react to the reviewed works more spontaneously, to emphasize the attitude of an "ordinary reader" from outside the cultural centre (which is actually the author’s stylization) and to be more spontaneous and emotive than in a typical review; the markedness oflanguage may create a distance from the topic as well. The unusual language also slows the process of perception ofthe text, prevents the reader from cursory reading and thus contributes to a more effective transmission of both facts and emotional attitudes

    The concept of functional styles has been the part of stylistic investigations in the Czech and Slavonic studies since the 1930s. The concept offunctional styles operates with given general functions of language to which the individual language features are being found. mostly at the levels of naming units or composition of the text. The new, revised edition of the textbook Stylistika souëasné éeštiny [Stylistics of Contemporary Czech] brings again into question what level of generalization is possible when describing the level of style in language and what viewpoint in general is acceptable, with regard to the present-day differentiation of texts. Besides, it is necessary to take style as a  quality of the whole unit of communication into consideration and to loose the relationship style-stylistics-standard language. The increasing number of media of communication also plays a significant role. It results in opening borders among cultures and „national" styles, covering up differences between written and spoken utterances and devaluation of written and spoken word, enlargement of group of people who can create public texts of notional orientation, growing importance of style for the producers' presentation and the decrease of the possibility to identiñ' them by the appearance of the text, substitution of real communication for virtual and origin of multimedia communication. Using language in communication and effects of these influences are ambiguous. In scholarly discussions it is pointed out that most of the existing texts are ambiguous as far as their function is concerned and that under these circumstances there is a growing number of texts which are polyfunctional or ambiguous as to their function. However, it is not the concept itself, i.e. the concept offunctional stylistics with several functional styles, that should be doubted, but rather the way the concept is usually applied. It is necessa ry to regard this concept not as an absolutely valid information about reality, but as a tool that provides the possibility to categorize the manifold reality of communication into cer tain general categories, so that it would be possible to discuss it at the level of metalanguage. The other extreme, the maximum enlargement of the number of general styles and giving up the concept ofstylistic norms, is not suitable. because it denies the role of stylistics as a generalizing scholarly discipline. The innovations concerning the orientation of stylistics should not lead to enlargement ofthe number of styles, but deeper - to new inve stigations concerning their essence. At present it is just possible to prepare such approach  by scholarly discussions. "This is also a reflection of the new situation of communication  reinforced by the new media: a scholarly discourse as a permanent direct discourse.

    Opis:
    The article deals with generał problems conceming specific means of expression from the diachronic point of view, using Common Czech (obecna ćeStina) as an example. It is especially emphasized that during the analysis a complex approach is of particular impor- tance, morę than from the synchronic point of view, also with regard to stylistic examina- tions. When scholars focusing on this particular discipline choose their theoretical background, they should also take into consideration concepts and definitions of Common Czech from both linguistic and sociolinguistic points of view in various periods. They should also choose only relevant means of expression, with sufficient frequency. Furthermore, they need to find texts the stylistic norm of which provides an opportunity to use Common Czech, to some extent or fully (today as well as in the past). Ali these aspects are significant, although their hierarchy may be varied; using identical materiał, it is thus possible to arrive at different generalizations.

    Opis:
    The norm of received pronunciation and its description in the codification does not have a long tradition. Beside short remarks in grammars, several short individual works were written since the mid-19th century but they were usually not generally accepted. Although 75 years ago, general guidelines for the codification of the pronunciation in Czech were proposed, followed by the first publication 60 years ago, its practical implementation was difficult. It should have an impact on public speech but the articulation mechanism is fixed naturally since childhood, and the defects are hard to remove without motivation. What is more, pronunciation instructions are presented in a written form, and it is necessary to express them with the user – a layman – in mind. Still, endeavours should be made to understand and to codify the pronunciation norms.
