Opis:: This text is a result of a completely new interpretation of Józef Czechowicz’s poem przez kresy. Despite earlier interpretations, pointing at the Arcadian nature of the poem, a suspicion of approaching catastrophe is shown as the main topic. Czechowicz shows it by using a special kind of the symbolism, called by T. S. Eliot an objective correlative. Then analysis of the versification reveals a specifically two-levelled structure of the poem: each element of a describing part of text has its own metapoetical correlative. It allows to assume that the most important statement of przez kresy is the irreducible difference between language – or poetical word – and the metaphysical experience.

Opis:: Transhuman utopia in pop culture – Kraftwerk caseThe article focuses on the analysis of work of pop group Kraftwerk in utopian context. Kraftwerk’ work is treated as a intermedial combination of music, texts, visual art and scenical performance. Its main content is a comprehensive vision of non-existed (yet) world of the man-machine. Kraftwerk’s work is compared to avant-garde musical experiments and to classical literary (and film) utopias because numerous formal and ideological similarities. The article is also an attempt of explanation of social and political background of Kraftwerk’s transhumanist vision.

Opis:: Artykuł dotyczy swoistej „podwójnej” twórczości muzyków związanych z zespołem Neurosis i projektem Tribes of Neurot. Obie formacje tworzą ci sami artyści, płyty obu zespołów stanowią dwie, radykalnie różne wersje tych samych kompozycji. Materiałem badawczym jest tu relacja między płytami Times of Grace Neurosis oraz Grace Tribes of Neurot (1999). Obie płyty, choć niezależne, słuchane równocześnie stanowią niezwykle ciekawą nową wartość artystyczną. Artykuł skupia się na analizie brzmienia oraz swoistej „lustrzaności” kompozycji obu zespołów, której celem jest interpretacja artystycznych i światopoglądowych implikacji zabiegu zaproponowanego przez muzyków Neurosis.
This paper concerns at ”doubleness” in work of Neurosis and Tribes of Neurot. The activity of both groups seems to be simultaneous: the same artists in the both bands, the same names of their albums, the same trakclists, similar cover designs suggest to treat it not as different ventures but as a significant dual artistic project. Parallel between simultaneous albums of Neurosis and Tribe of Neurot makes an impression of disturbing presence of unclear alterego in their music.

Opis:: The article concerns the motif of the vehicle as an important element of post-apocalyptic world. Some post-apocalyptic films show visions of humanity after the catastrophe using the image of the car which not only constitutes the element of space, but often influences the motivation or performs a symbolic function. Visual aspect of post-apo cars, lack of traditional destinations and almost compulsive using of vehicles by the protagonist and antagonist in such films like Mad Max series (directed by George Miller), Hell (directed by Tim Fehlbaum), Downstream (directed by Simone Bartesaghi), Damnation Alley (directed by Jack Smight), The Book of Eli (directed by Albert and Allen Hughes) seem to be really important for the vision of future (and contemporary) humanity.
Tematem artykułu jest motywy samochodu jako ważnego elementu świata przedstawionego w niektórych wizjach postapokaliptycznych. Filmowe przedstawienia ludzkiej społeczności po katastrofie często posługują się tym motywem, który nie tylko stanowi element przestrzeni, ale często jest włączony w akcję, wpływa na motywacje czy wreszcie pełni w nich funkcję symboliczną. Dzieje się tak w omawianych w artykule filmach postapokaliptycznych: seria Mad Max (reż. George Miller), Hell (reż. Tim Fehlbaum), Downstreem (reż. Simone Bartesaghi), Damnation Alley (reż. Jack Smigh), The Book of Eli (reż. Albert i Allan Hughes). Artykuł prezentuje analizę obrazu samochodu w filmach postapokaliptycznych (jego wyglądu zewnętrznego, użyteczności), celów podróży podejmowanych przez bohaterów oraz specyficznego związku między samochodami a ludźmi.

Opis:: The article concerns the literary manifestations of the functioning of the concept of „Central Europe”. The author starts his essay with an analysis of the political-historical origin of this term and subsequently reviews its contemporary representations in the works of Polish and Ukrainian writers (Stasiuk, Andruchowycz, Żadan, Irwaneć). In their works which take up the issue of collective identity, the above authors who themselves come from the region which they describe in their books, often resort to the use of elements of the Utopia and anti-Utopia. An analysis of this phenomenon leads one to observe that the works in question create the myth of Central Europe as a place whose role is to create an identity (between East and West) which in reality does not exist.

Opis:: Drivers suffering from epilepsy are commonly regarded as a threat to road safety. However, inability to use their own means of transport very often implies specific professional effects and lowers the quality of life. The aim of this study was to analyze the driving status of patients with epilepsy in Poland.Material and MethodsThe prospective study was performed using an independent questionnaire developed by the authors, consisting of 4 parts: 1) socio-demographic information, 2) clinical information, 3) driving information, and 4) opinions about patients with epilepsy as drivers. The study was conducted in November 2018–September 2019. A total of 188 patients completed this study.ResultsMore than one-quarter of the patients have a driving license. Among them, 35 individuals (accounting for 18.62% of the whole study group) said that they had received their driving license after the diagnosis of epilepsy. In 10 cases (5.32%), seizures occurred while the patients were driving and in 72 cases (38.30%) while they were traveling as passengers. Among all socio-clinical factors, having a driving license was conditioned by the marital status (p = 0.008) and education (p = 0.007). Other factors did not affect having a driving license or the time of obtaining the license (p > 0.05 for all cases). A relationship was observed between the occurrence of side effects of antiepileptic drugs and the occurrence of seizures while traveling as a car passenger (p = 0.001). Other factors did not affect the occurrence of epileptic seizures while traveling by car, either as a driver or a passenger (p > 0.05).ConclusionsA significant proportion of the respondents were of the opinion that patients with epilepsy should not be allowed to obtain a driving license, which is probably related to concerns about the occurrence of epileptic seizures while driving. It is necessary to conduct a nationwide educational and information campaign on epilepsy in various aspects.
