Opis:
Cenomanian mesoeucrocodylians from North America are known primarily from isolated teeth and scutes; any associated remains of this age are noteworthy and represent welcome additions to knowledge. Herein, we describe postcranial elements belonging to a single individual goniopholidid from the Mussentuchit Member of the Cedar Mountain Formation. We argue that this individual represents only the second fossil referable to Dakotasuchus kingi, based on overlapping elements, such as the coracoid, dorsal vertebrae, and scutes, which are strikingly similar to their counterparts in the holotype. The coracoid, in particular, is readily distinguished from those belonging to other closely-related crocodilian taxa; enough so to warrant detailed comparisons in the absence of diagnostic cranial material. The new D. kingi specimen is nearly 20% larger than the holotype, with body length and mass estimates comparable to modern American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis), making it one of the largest aquatic predators in the Mussentuchit ecosystem.

Opis:
The soil sample was collected from the paddy field of Sriperumbudur, Tamilnadu which is having a history of repeated pesticide applications. The isolation of efficient pesticide degrading bacteria was identified as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis. The growth of the three pesticide degrading isolates was assessed in Minimal salt broth containing 25 ppm of pesticides. Two popularly used pesticides Metribuzin and Profenofos were selected for this study. Among the three bacterial isolates, the bacteria Bacillus subtilis utilized the pesticides effectively and showed maximum growth. The growth of the three pesticides degrading isolates Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis was assessed in Minimal salt broth containing 25 ppm of pesticides at different temperature levels (25 °C, 30 °C, 35 °C, 40 °C, 45 °C, 50 °C & 55 °C) and pH levels (pH 4, pH 5, pH 6, pH 7 & pH 8) and carbon sources (Lactose, Dextrose, Fructose, Mannose & Galactose) and nitrogen sources Peptone, Yeast extract, Beef extract, Malt extract and Casein respectively. The maximum growth rate of bacteria was recorded at 35 °C and pH 6. The maximum growth of bacteria was in the presence of Dextrose followed by Fructose, Galactose and Mannose. The least growth was recorded in Lactose broth culture. The maximum growth of bacteria was in the presence of Malt extract followed by Peptone, Yeast extract and Casein. The least growth was recorded in Beef extract broth culture. The bacterial isolates showed maximum growth in the Minimal salt broth containing Profenofos followed by Metribuzin.

Opis:
The present work represents an extrapolation of W.I. Thomas and Florian Znaniecki’s study, The Polish Peasant in Europe and America, on behalf of the development of sociological theory. The article focuses on careers and institutions in higher education. The curriculum vitae serves as the novel human document by which to investigate both social and personal change. Academic careers are studied by virtue of their objective and subjective dimensions. Objectively, the institution of education is revealed through the shifting expectations that govern work in academia in specific historical times (indicated by the cohort in which academics earned their Ph.D.s) and in specific socially bound places (indicated by the type of university in which academics work). Major social change in education is likely to spell personal change for the way in which people subjectively experience the contemporary academic career. The data come from U.S.-based academics; parallel transformational changes are observable globally. The global change discussed in the work centres on the diffusion and institutionalization of the research role. The sources and consequences of this change are problematic. Akin to Thomas and Znaniecki’s larger analytic aims, patterns of change are used inductively to formulate theory: the paper culminates by postulating a theory of increasing tendencies in the way knowledge is produced in higher education institutions throughout the world.

Opis:
Hydrolysates were produced using Alcalase (AH), chymotrypsin (CH), pepsin (PH), and trypsin (TH), and also fluted pumpkin leaf protein isolate (FLI) as a substrate. AH had the lowest degree of hydrolysis (16.37%) but exhibited overall superior antioxidant and enzyme inhibitory properties. Therefore, it was fractionated by membrane ultrafiltration to give <1, 1-3, 3-5, 5-10, and >10 kDa peptide fractions. Gel permeation chromatography showed that the molecular weight of the FLI was 19.77 kDa and that of the hydrolysates was below 7.5 kDa. The hydrolysate peptides had a high content of hydrophobic amino acids but low levels of sulfur-containing amino acids, when compared to protein of FLI. Peptide sequence analysis showed that the hydrolysates consisted of dipeptides, tripeptides, and tetrapeptides with molecular weights below 500 Da. The hydrolysates were also stronger inhibitors of linoleic acid oxidation, α-amylase, α-glucosidase, and angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) than FLI. Among the fractions, the <1 and 1-3 kDa were the most effective free radical scavengers and metal chelators in addition to their strong inhibitory activities against α-amylase, α-glucosidase, and ACE. We conclude that the AH and low molecular weight peptide fraction (<3 kDa) could find applications in formulating foods with various bioactive properties.

Several observational methods are available for ergonomists to evaluate the exposure to musculoskeletal disorder (MSD) risk factors associated with work. Those methods can be used to evaluate the impact of modifications done at a workstation on the exposure to risk factors. Three methods (QEC, OCRA and 4D Watbak) were used to assess the exposure to MSD risk factors before and after the implementation of changes at a saw and block opening workstation. The results from those 3 methods served to compare the methods and evaluate their consistency. Comparisons among the methods showed positive association between QEC and OCRA indices, and between the QEC back index and 4D Watbak.

Mov.s (velocity) ranging from ±0.0000001 m/epoch to±0.000007 m/epoch with greater movements noticed in the horizontal direction than in the vertical direction of the building. Because the observed movements were insignificant, the buildinghas been classified as stable. However, a longer period of observation with a bi-monthly observational interval has been recommended to enable decision on the rate of rise/sink and deformation of the building

Since 1999, Nigeria has witnessed an uninterrupted democratic experiment with many challenges. With the installation of multi-party democracy in Nigeria, the era of military authoritarian regimes were over as Nigerians were looking forward to a free society characterized by social justice, economic growth and free, fair and credible electoral process. But today, democracy sits on the horn of a dilemma in Nigeria due to massive political corruption by the leaders. Free and fair election which is one of the features of true democracy has eluded Nigeria since the advent of the country’s nascent democratic dispensation. The behavior of the political leaders has cast doubt on any consolidation of democracy in Nigeria. This paper gives a comprehensive definition of political corruption and democratic consolidation, and highlights the nature of political corruption in Nigeria. The paper also examines the impact of corruption on the consolidation of democracy under the prevailing socio-economic challenges in Nigeria. Finally, the paper concludes with the advice that for there to be democratic consolidation, there must be massive investment in the provision of the basic needs of the Nigerian people.

Opis:
The Optima Local Fauna represents an important glimpse into the ecological transition between savannah and grassland during the late Miocene (Hemphillian) of what is now the southcentral Great Plains of North America. Though dominated by horses, herbivores from the Optima are morphologically diverse, bearing adaptations for both browsing and grazing lifestyles. Likewise, the carnivorans show similar ranges of size and presumed dietary behavior. In this study, we used carbonate isotope, mesowear, and tooth breakage and wear analyses to investigate the dietary complexity of mammals from a single site collected by the Oklahoma Museum of Natural History. Seventeen taxa were analyzed, including five perissodactyls (Teleoceras hicksi, Dinohippus interpolatus, Neohipparion eurystyle, Nannippus ingenuus, and Astro hippus ansae), four artiodactyls (Texoceros guymonensis, Pediomeryx hemphillensis, Megatylopus matthewi, and Platy gonus sp.), a single proboscidean (Mammut sp.), two rodents (Dipoides indet. and Umbogaulus monodon), and five carni vorans (Agriotherium schneideri, Amphimachairodus coloradensis, Borophagus secundus, Eucyon davisi, Pliotaxi dea cf. nevadensis). Both stable isotope analysis and dental mesowear indicate a broad dietary partitioning occurred among the Optima herbivores, where the artiodactyls were identified as mixed feeders and the perissodactyls were recovered as grazers. In the carnivorans, the large felid Amphimachairodus coloradensis was a hypercarnivore with limited tooth breakage and an enriched δ13C signature, indicating low carcass utilization and a prey preference for horses. The canids had a more generalized diet, with B. secundus showing a greater proportional consumption of carcasses through a higher tooth breakage rate. The large ursid Agriotherium schneideri is here interpreted as an omnivore based on depleted δ13 C values. Overall, we found evidence for a diversity of dietary niches in both carnivores and herbivores during the late Hemphillian in Oklahoma, likely driven by the expansion of grasslands in the region.

Chromatographic separation was achieved on a 250 x 4.6 mm i.d. reversed phase column Qualisil BDS 5u C18, Using deionized acetonitrile:water in the ratio of 85:15 v/v respectively as mobile phase. The eluent was monitored at 254 nm. A sharp peak was obtained for the Pirimiphos-methyl at 9.29 min. The UV Spectrophotometric method performed at 254 nm after full scan analysis using methanol as a solvent. The result revealed that both methods are suitable to carry out routine analysis of Pirimiphos methyl, However HPLC results showed high precise, accurate and sensitive than the UV Spectrophotometer. Hence HPLC method is suitable for trace analysis of Pirimiphos methyl in environmental samples.
