Opis:
Flammability limits and flame speeds of dilute-lean fuel mixtures of hydrogen (H2) and acetylem premixed with oxygen (02) and nitrogen (N2) were examined with a detailed kinetics model. These mixtures are used in a preburn in a constant volume combustion vessel to create elevated temperatures and pressures with gas compositions that represent the thermodynamic state in a diesel engine combustion chamber at fuel injection and auto ignition. A mixture of hydrogen and acetylene with combined atomic hydrogen to carbon ratio (HCR) of 1.85 was used to match that of typical diesel fuel and results are shown in comparison to a previously used mixture with a HCR of 1.17. The lower flammability limit (LFL) of the HCR 1.85 fuel mixture was found at an equivalence ratio of 0.235, while flame speed and adiabatic combustion temperatures were also predicted for post preburn product oxygen levels between O and 21 percent. Flame speeds were shown to decrease with a reduction in oxygen concentration, an increase in nitrogen dilution, while combustion temperatures increased over most of this range. Trends for this relation of flame speed and temperature are presented and a new premixed fuel mixture with an HCR of 1.85 is proposed.

Understanding the initial steps during ultrafast molecular reactions involving large spin state changes is a vital goal in structural dynamics research. These involve knowledge of the geometric structure of the system. Ultrafast X-ray absorption spectroscopy with 50-100 picosecond time resolution establishes the geometric structure of the short-lived (τ = 0.6 ns) high spin state. Here we focus on time-resolved X-ray absorption studies with 160-200 fs temporal resolution to monitor the structural evolution in this spin-conversion process.

Opis:
This paper reports the synthesis, crystal structure, surface morphology, optical and electrical properties of Mg-doped Sn₂S₃ thin films deposited by spray pyrolysis technique. All the films exhibit orthorhombic crystal structure with a (211) preferential orientation. Crystallite size calculations based on the Debye-Scherrer formula indicated that the Sn₂S₃ crystallite size increases with Mg content from 27.97 nm to 33.58 nm. Scanning electron microscopy images showed that all the films were very smooth composed of nanoneedle and nanoplate shaped grains. The band gap energy of the films exhibits a blue shift from 1.94 eV to 2.09 eV with increase in Mg concentration. Resistivity values of the undoped and Mg-doped Sn₂S₃ films were found to be in the order of 0.1 Ωcm. From the obtained results it is observed that the Sn₂S₃ film coated with 2 wt% Mg concentration exhibits better physical properties.

The $λ^{2}$ dependence on acoustic field intensity (and hence RF drive power) can render large aperture acousto-optic tunable filters impractical for many applications beyond about 2 μm. One potential technique for reducing the RF drive-power requirement is to configure an acousto-optic tunable filter such that the interaction region is at acoustic resonance. We describe an acousto-optic tunable filter that operates at resonance and present an analysis of the predicted performance. In addition, we address the practical issues in deploying such a scheme. Finally, we present results of a prototype "resonant acousto-optic tunable filter" operating in the 1-2 μm region.

Opis:
Valves of a thoracican cirripede belonging to a new species of the Neolepadidae, Ashinkailepas indica Gale sp. nov. are described from a Late Pleistocene cold seep (52.6 ka), cored in the Krishna-Godavari Basin, offshore from the eastern coast of India. This constitutes the first fossil record of the genus, and its first occurrence in the Indian Ocean. Other fossil records of the Neolepadidae (here elevated to full family status) are discussed, and it is concluded that only Stipilepas molerensis from the Eocene of Denmark, is correctly referred to the family. Cladistic analysis of the Neolepadidae supports a basal position for Ashinkailepas, as deduced independently from molecular studies, and the Lower Cretaceous brachylepadid genus Pedupycnolepas is identified as sister taxon to Neolepadidae. Neolepadids are not Mesozoic relics as claimed, preserved in association with the highly specialised environments of cold seeps and hydrothermal vents, but are rather an early Cenozoic offshoot from the clade which also gave rise to the sessile cirripedes.

Opis:
The past few decades have witnessed a tremendous increase in the consumption of antibiotics worldwide. This rampant and unregulated use of antibiotics and their improper disposal has led to the accumulation of these drugs in the environment. This in turn has led to the emergence of antibiotic resistance in microbes and has become one of the most pressing global concerns in medicine, with highly resistant pathogens of many species proving difficult to treat. The aim of the study was to synthesise silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) using white rot fungus, Pleurotus ostreatus and assess its potential to carry out photocatalytic degradation of ampicillin. UV–Vis spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and transmission electron microscope have been used to characterize biosynthesized Ag-NPs. The photocatalytic degradation of ampicillin in aqueous solution by Ag-NPs was evaluated under natural sunlight. The effect of the operating conditions (contact time, Ag-NP concentration and initial ampicillin concentration) on the photocatalytic degradation was also investigated. The highest ampicillin degradation of 96.5% was observed after exposure of the solution (antibiotic + nanoparticles) for 4 h in sunlight. The maximum degradation was observed at an Ag-NP concentration of 5 ppm at pH 6. To the best of our knowledge, photocatalytic degradation of ampicillin using Ag-NPs synthesised by P. ostreatus has not been reported earlier.

The development of advanced spatial-positioning and monitoring systems for medical monitoring and emergency response using RFID & Wi-Fi technologies is a large-scale research project being conducted at the ward W21C of Foothills Hospital, Calgary, Canada by University of Calgary. The scope of this project is to support real-time location tracking of medical equipments and personnel in hospital settings. In this context, we developed an innovative, interactive, decision-support medical system for tracking of personnel and high value medical equipments. The goal behind development of such a system is to provide a convenient, easy to use interface using existing technologies that allows to visualize and analyse clinical pathways and health care provider’s workflow pattern as well as to perform time motion studies and more advanced statistical pattern analysis. While achieving this goal, we aim to also fill the existing void of documentation and present to scientific community functional issues encountered along with their importance in success.

Opis:
The genus Mystriosaurus, established by Kaup in 1834, was one of the first thalattosuchian genera to be named. The holotype, an incomplete skull from the lower Toarcian Posidonienschiefer Formation of Altdorf (Bavaria, southern Germany), is poorly known with a convoluted taxonomic history. For the past 60 years, Mystriosaurus has been considered a subjective junior synonym of Steneosaurus. However, our reassessment of the Mystriosaurus laurillardi holotype demonstrates that it is a distinct and valid taxon. Moreover, we find the holotype of “Steneosaurus” brevior, an almost complete skull from the lower Toarcian Whitby Mudstone Formation of Whitby (Yorkshire, UK), to be a subjective junior synonym of M. laurillardi. Mystriosaurus is diagnosed in having: a heavily and extensively ornamented skull; large and numerous neurovascular foramina on the premaxillae, maxillae and dentaries; anteriorly oriented external nares; and four teeth per premaxilla. Our phylogenetic analyses reveal M. laurillardi to be distantly related to Steneosaurus bollensis, supporting our contention that they are different taxa. Interestingly, our analyses hint that Mystriosaurus may be more closely related to the Chinese teleosauroid (previously known as Peipehsuchus) than any European form.

The Urak Lawoi are indigenous fishermen on Thailand’s west coast. The population includes an estimated 400 divers who dive using surface-supplied compressed air. In a cross-sectional survey conducted among the 6 major communities of Urak Lawoi, questionnaire-based interviews were administered to active divers, ex-divers, and families or colleagues of divers who had died in the previous 5 years. Six deaths resulting from diving-related accidents were identified, indicating a diving-related mortality rate of approximately 300 per 100,000 person-years, while in the same 5-year period 11 divers had been disabled owing to diving-related events, indicating a diving-related disabling event rate of approximately 550 per 100,000 person-years. Among 342 active divers interviewed, one third reported having suffered from decompression illness, although based on reported current symptoms over 50% were classified as suffering from recurring non-disabling decompression illness. Physical examination conducted on a subset of 98 active divers revealed the presence of spinal injury (clonus, raised muscle tone, and heightened reflexes) and of joint damage (pain in one or more joint, crepitus, or restricted movement) in 24 and 30% respectively. Improved primary prevention and medical treatment are needed to reduce mortality and morbidity among this population.

We experimentally demonstrate a new acoustic sensor based on the concept of quantum mechanical scattering fidelity and the Loschmidt echo applied to classical acoustic waves in air. The sensor employs a one-recording-channel time-reversal mirror that exploits spatial reciprocity to sensitively measure the classical analog of the scattering fidelity of an enclosed region. The experiments are carried out in a stairwell using a simple speaker and microphone. The input is a 7.0 kHz signal that is amplitude modulated with a 1 ms long pulse. We examine the sensitivity of the time-reversed reconstructed pulse to phase noise, long term drift, and to typical perturbations caused by the rotation of an object in the scattering environment.
