Opis:
Introduction. The motives for choosing studies are the determinants of student involvement in their course. Obtaining an appropriate level of knowledge is particularly important in medical professions. Empathy and personal predispositions also have a significant role in medical studies. Objectives. The aim of the study was to examine medical students’ motives for choosing their studies. It was also decided to examine their level of empathy and the possible connections between them. Material and methods. The study involved 450 medical students (physiotherapy, nursing, obstetrics, medicine): 391 women (86.89%) and 59 men (13.11%). The research tool was a survey questionnaire. In addition to the basic sociodemographic variables, data was collected on the motives for undertaking medical studies and the level of empathic sensitivity using IRI (Interpersonal Reactivity Index). Results. The most frequently chosen motives for undertaking studies were the willingness to help (65% of respondents) and fulfillment of aspirations (51% of respondents). Women more often than men indicated motives regarding the need for appreciation as well as the possibility of high earnings (p < 0.05). The level of empathy in women was also higher in two subscales: "empathic concern " (p < 0.05) and "personal distress" (p < 0.0001). No differences were found in the level of empathy regarding the field of study. The choice of motives, persuasion of family or friends, willingness to help and fulfillment of aspirations influenced the diversity of a number of empathy subscales. Conclusions. The choice of studies is determined by the motives "for myself" and "for others". Gender and the type of motives are related to empathy. The feeling of empathy is an important component of the personality of medical professionals and this issue should be analyzed deeper.

Opis:
Supplementation is one of the forms of powerlifting training support. It may have an influence on physical parameters of the contenders and may also have an impact on perception of the body and self – esteem. The aim of the study was to assess relationships between age, BMI, data concerning training, supplementation, self – assurance and body value among the contenders practising powerlifting.51 people who regularly practise powerlifting: 11 women aged 23.5 ±3.6 and 40 men aged 23.9 ±8.5 have been examined using self – esteem (SES) and body – esteem (BES) questionnaires. Data concerning age, BMI, training variables and supplementation have been also gathered.Supplementation is used by 91% of women and 85% of men. Men use more types of supplements than women (p < 0.05). Among women SES does not correlate with any other variables. Among men SES negatively correlates with the number of used supplements, as well as with all of the BES domains.Using supplementation among people who train powerlifting is rather common. Among women, SES in not related in any way with training or supplementation. Among men, lower self – esteem (SES) is significantly counterbalanced with BES.
