Opis:
The aimof this study was to investigate the chemical composition of groundwater and the factors affecting it in the Stara Rzeka catchment located in the marginal zone of the Carpathian Mountains in theWioenickie Foothills. Nineteen samples of water were collected from wells and their pH and electrolytic conductivity were measured. The chemical composition of the samples, including 14 ions was determined by ion chromatography. Principal component analysis (PCA) allowed to isolate the factors affecting the quality of groundwater. Geological structure and anthropogenic pressure proved to be the determining factors. The cluster analysis was also used in this study and it allowed to group the analyzed waters in terms of their mutual similarity. Additionally, the chemical composition of water samples was determined with regard to their suitability for human consumption.

Opis:
Chemical denudation plays a crucial role in affecting the water chemistry and the development of the relief, therefore the dissolution of carbonate rocks is the subject of numerous research. The aim of the study was to determine the effect of soil material derived from the organic (O) as well as humus (A) horizons of forest soils (common beech and Norway spruce stands) on the dissolution of rock. During one−year laboratory experiment standardized samples of dolomitic limestone placed in the soil material were washed with deionized water. The greatest loss of the sample rocks mass occurred in O material from Norway spruce stand (43.9‰ on average), while in other cases, the loss of rock samples mass was much lower and statistically non−significant. The total masses of calcium (Ca2+) leached from O material under beech and spruce stands were similar, however in the case of spruce most of Ca2+ derives from rock dissolution. Similarly, higher proportion of magnesium (Mg2+) leached from O material under Norway spruce derives from rock dissolution, although the total mass of Mg2+ leached is higher from O material under beech. The total mass of Ca2+ and Mg2+ leached from A material was similar or higher than from O material, however most of those ions derived from the soil material. The results indicate that the replacement of beech by Norway spruce can increase chemical denudation as well as Ca2+ and Mg2+ leaching, wherein Ca2+ leaching would be significantly greater than Mg2+.

Opis:
The paper contains the results of analysis of chemical, isotopic and trace metal composition of anomalous spring water in the Tatra Mts. Obtained data were the basis for an attempt to determine the origin of this hydrogeochemical anomaly. The spring is located in the Tomanowa Valley in the Western Tatra Mts. The spring water is characterized by the mineralization (TDS) above 500 mg/dm3. As regards the chemical composition of the water, Ca2+ ions show the highest concentration among cations, while HCO- among anions. The spring water has been assigned to the: SO —HCO—Ca-Mg hydrochemical type. Among trace metals, Sr, Ba, B, Li and Al. reveal The highest concentrations. The oxygen and hydrogen isotopic composition(δ18O and δ2H) indicates that this is infiltration water. Delta values of oxygen and sulphur isotopes (δ18OS and δ34S) of the sulphate ion indicate that SO4 of this spring water is likely derived from leaching of gypsum or anhydrite evaporites.

Opis:
The study focused on the effects of deforestation by heavy winds and tree stand damage produced by bark beetle invasion on water chemistry of mountainous catchment of Kościeliski Stream in the Tatra National Park (southern Poland). 200 samples of stream and spring water were collected in three series: in July, August and October 2015. Water samples obtained from areas characterized by tree stand damage caused by heavy winds were found to have much higher mean concentration of nitrate (15.44 mg/L) as well as a much higher overall mean nitrate content (3.44% mval/L) than samples obtained from non−deforested areas (3.26 mg/L and 0.78% mval/L). The increase in nitrate concentration and its share in overall water chemistry was high enough that the anion sequence for the deforested areas became altered from HCO3>SO4>NO3>Cl to HCO3>NO3> SO4>Cl. The mean change in water nitrate concentration in areas with tree stands damaged by the bark beetle was smaller (6.17 mg/L; 1.60% mval/L) than that for areas deforested by wind. The concentration of NO3 – in stream water in deforested areas varied more than that in stream water in non−deforested areas.
