Opis:
The research work has been carried out to estimate the low level cobalt application enhance antioxidant enzyme activities of cluster bean plants. The experiments were conducted in earthen pots containing 3 kg of air dried soil. The inner surface of pots was lined with polythene sheet. Cluster bean plants were raised in soil amended with different concentration of cobalt (0, 50, 100, 150, 200 and 250 mg/kg). The antioxidant enzyme activities were analysed at 30, 60, and 90 days after sowing (DAS). There found a significant enhance antioxidant enzyme activities at 50 mg/kg cobalt application in the soil in all the sampling days when compared to control. Further increase in the cobalt level (100-250 mg/kg) in the soil decreased antioxidant enzyme activities of cluster bean plants in all the sampling days.

Opis:
The tradition of associating trees with gods and goddesses in Tamilagam can be traced back to Sangam literature, which is full of references to more than a hundred plants that dominated the life of the ancient Tamils. The present study documented the Sthalavirkshas of 5 siva temples in and around Mayiladuthurai, Southern India, 5 plant species were recorded. These have been arranged by binomial name, vernacular name, family name with age of trees, ICBN norms and medicinal uses. The phenology of Sthalavrikshas was documented by interview and direct observation of plants. Medicinal information of Sthalavriksha had been gathered from the available literature. There are more references to plants with special significance. The Sthalavrikshas have played a vital role in the well-being of humanity. Tamil tradition and culture have successfully preserved biodiversity through the ages. The Sthalavrikshas are symbolic of a single genetic resource and play an important role in the conservation of biodiversity. The process of conserving economically, ecologically and medicinally important plants by declaring them as sacred also protected the genetic value of several plant species. Thus the preservation of Sthalavrikshas may also help in the conservation of local floral wealth.

Thespesia populnea Corr. floral extract has been shown to have anti-steroidogenic effect. Bark extract of Thespesia populnea has no toxicity as per the earlier reports of traditional medicine used by the tribal peoples of Indira Gandhi Wild Life Sanctuary, Pollachi, South India. In the present study, anti-steroidogenic effect of Thespesia populnea (Malvacea) bark was evaluated in adult female mice (Mus musculus). Methanolic extract of Thespesia populnea bark (METP) was administered orally at the doses of 100, 250, 400 mg/kg body weight for a duration of 30 days, and normal saline (0.9%) to control group. There was significant reduction in the (P<0.05) wet weight of both ovaries. Cholesterol content in ovaries of METP treated mice was significantly increased (P<0.05). The two ovarian enzymes 3-,17-hydroxy steroid dehydrogenase and serum estrogen and progesterone also decreased (P<0.05) significantly. Administration of METP in mice did not show any variation in the hematological and bio-chemical parameters. A certain number of adult female mice were ovariectomized (OVX) and tested for hormone levels with EDP and with EDP + Extract to confirm the antifertility effect of METP. It is concluded that antifertility effect of METP could be due to its anti-steroidogenic activity.

Carissa carandas are important medicinal plants in Tamil Nadu. The entire plant has medicinal values. Carissa carandas plants are used to cure various diseases such as asthma, skin disease, cough, cold and tuberculosis. They usually are prepared as fresh juices rather than boiling water and decoction leaves and flowers of Carissa carandas. The juice from the leaves play an important role in this matter. Usually about 30 ml of the juice is taken thrice a day with honey, acting as relieving agent for irritable cough due to its soothing action on the nerve and by liquefying the sputum, which makes expectoration easier. Carissa carandas are important traditional remedies in Tamil Nadu.

Clitoria ternatea have no toxicity as per the earlier reports of sexual stimulate effect of traditional medicine used by the tribal and fishery village women’s of Point Calimere Wildlife Sanctuary, Nagapattinam district, Southern India. In the present study, reproductive stimuli and fertility effect of raw extract of Clitoria ternatea (RECT) was administered orally at the doses of 250 mg/kg body weight of female rat for a period of 30 days and normal clean water (Normal slain 0.9%, 0.5 ml/kg per day) to control groups. There were no significance changes in the body weight of RECT treated group when compared to control group. RECT treated female rat group vigorously mated with male when allowed on estrus phase of female rat observed in vaginal smears. The serum estradiol level was increased (P < 0.05) significantly. Administered the RECT showed no significant change in the biochemical parameters and hematological parameters of RBC, WBC count when compared to control group. It is concluded that the test of RECT could be due to its reproductive effect in female rat.

The indigenous systems of medicines, developed in India for centuries, make use of many medicinal herbs. These systems include Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani and many other indigenous practices. The Nagapattinam district is considered as notable land for rich biological resources and broad spectra of plant existence. The flora of the district is wealthy and rich and vibrant because of the moist deciduous and dry deciduous mode of vegetation. The documentation of the present study provides evidence that medicinal flora play an important role in the human health care system of Mayiladuthurai Taluk, Nagapattinam district of Tami Nadu, India.

Opis:
The present survey was carried out to document the traditional uses of medicinal plants among the Adi community in four settlements which are located nearby area of Daying Ering Memorial Wild Life Sanctuary, Arunachal Pradesh, North East India. The information was obtained through open and face-to-face interviews with the local knowledgeable people. A total of 73 plant species belonging to 66 genera and 44 families were documented in the study. The dominant family in the survey was Asteraceae (eight species) followed by Euphorbiaceae (seven species). Of the collected ethno medicinal plants, 46% herbs followed by 36% shrubs, 11% trees and 7% climbers. Among the different plant parts used for the preparation of medicine, leaves were mostly used and predominantly used herbal preparations were taking raw materials directly followed by decoction. The herbal medicines to treat variety of ailments such as to heal cuts and wounds (eight species), jaundice (six species), bone fracture and gastritis (six species each), blood pressure, and ring worm (four species each), diarrhoea, headache, snake bite and toothache (three species each), anaemia, antidote, asthma, diabetes, expel worms, gynaecological problems, loose motion, malaria, sinusitis, skin disease and stomach problems (two species each) and other diseases containing one species each were recorded. The plants like Alstonia scholaris, Diplazium esculentum, and Hydrocotyle sibthorpioides should be given priority in conservation point of view, since these plants eroding rapidly in study area due to over-exploitation. The usage of plants by the Adi community reflects their interest in herbal medicine and further investigation on these species may lead to the discovery of novel bioactive molecules.
