Opis:
The basis for the settling of accounts in Czech lands was President Edvard Beneš’s decree adopted on 19 June 1945. colloquially referred to as the “Great Retribution Decree”. The decree served as a basis for the creation of 24 Extraordinary People’s Courts. As a supplement to the retribution laws, the so-called “Small Retribution Decree” was passed. Retribution courts were established against the background of spontaneous retributions taking place in the spring of 1945. A lot of German soldiers and civilians, as well as Czechs accused of collaboration with the enemy fell victim to wild retributions (sometimes in the form of lynches). The “Great Retribution Decree” ceased to be effective on 4 May 1947, marking the end of Extraordinary People’s Courts which had passed judgement on more than 21,000 people. The EPC in Prague judged many German war criminals, e.g. Karl Hermann Frank and Kurt Daluege. Separate legislative measures were adopted to judge high ranking officials of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. Based on a decree passed by President Benes, the National Court (Narodní Soud) was established. Since the beginning of retributions, the authorities in Prague were faced with the need to set apart the process of retributions and the displacements of Germans from Czechoslovakia. Based on the legal solutions adopted, bringing to justice a lot of people, particularly Sudeten Germans, for what they had done was blurred by the post war displacement process. The retribution process taking place in Slovakia was also unique. The retributions were based on a decree passed by the Slovakian National Council on 15 May 1945. As opposed to what happened in the Czech part of the country, the Slovaks distinguished a few categories of the accused, depending on their nationality. The National Court (Národný Súd) was established in Bratislava. It is before this court that the famous trial was held against reverend Jozef Tiso, the former president. Having taken over the power in Czechoslovakia in February 1948, the communists decided to reactivate the Extraordinary People’s Courts. As opposed to the first phase of retributions, the “second retribution” was supposed to be based on a vague notion of “people’s justice”. The objective of the new government was to use the retribution process to discredit their political opponents. Similar measures aimed at instrumentalisation of the retributions had been adopted by Czech and Slovak communists even before the coup d’état of February 1948.

Apart from their protective function, Life Insurances (individual and group ones) give the opportunity to accumulate and increase one’s capital with the use of unit-link insurances. The amount of the capital that has been gathered depends on: the age of the insured, the amount of the insurance premium, the level of insurance security, or the duration of the insurance. The insured chooses such a  program that suits his individual needs. Current debt crisis of countries such as Greece clearly shows that the state is not able to guarantee its citizens decent pensions. Because of that situation, the role of the private insurance market will be still on the rise.

Opis:
The main institution responsible for the investigation, documentation and prosecution of crimes committed during World War II was the Central Commission for the Investigation of German Crimes in Poland (from 1949 known as the Central Commission for the Investigation of Hitlerite Crimes – GKBZHwP). The aim of this article is to analyze the functioning of the District Commis- sion for the Investigation of Hitlerite Crimes in Gdańsk (OKBZH), which constituted a division of GKBZHwP in Poland. The Pomeranian micro scale provides the background for the analysis of the methodology of work of the said institution and reflects the mechanisms and scale of its dependence from the Central Commission for the Investigation of Hitlerite Crime and other organizations, such as ZBoWiD (the Society of Fighters for Freedom and Democracy). The first stage of the study of the crimes of the Second World War in Pomerania was documentation and prosecution, which in the years 1946–1948 was carried out by the District Commission for the Investigation of German Crimes in Gdańsk. However, this institution was dissolved in 1948. This was an element of the gradual limitation of the Central Commission, further reflected in the liquidation of all local divisions. The reactivation of the Gdańsk division of GKBZHwP in Poland took place on 13 th February 1965. The priority was the continuation of investigations carried out in the second half of the 1940s related to the biggest places of torture in Pomerania. For many years witnesses were interrogated and evidence was collected in such cases as: the crime in Piaśnica and Szpęgawsk, as well as mass executions in several towns of the Kościerski poviat. Propaganda activities of the time focused on slogans calling for non-forgetting and non-forgiving the crimes, which was in line with the anti-German phraseology of PRL authorities. Investigative, scientific, research and propaganda activities of OKBZH in Gdańsk slowed down to a certain extent in the 1970s. A lot of investigation materials were transferred via the Central Commission to Ludwigsburg. The biggest investigations were finished. The 1980s, and particularly the beginning of the decade determined by Martial Law, nearly brought an end to the activities of the Gdańsk commission. The situation did not change with the introduction of new regulations in 1984. At the end of the 1980s, the commission’s activities began to include issues previously concerned as taboo, such as the presence of Poles in Wehrmacht or soviet crimes in Pomerania. The operations of OKBZH in Gdańsk combined explicitly expert activities with manipulations related to the memory of World War II for temporary purposes by consecutive leaders of PRL.

Opis:
The purpose of the presented article is to indicate to what an extent and how the most opinion-forming dailies and weeklies in Germany reported events taking place on the Polish coast in December 1970. The workers’ revolt, which ended with a bloody suppression by the army and militia, took place only a week after the agreement between the People’s Republic of Poland and West Germany had been concluded. Analyzing this issue, research questions can be asked, both about the number and size of articles as well as their nature. Were they predominantly accounts of the course of events or were commentaries also popular? Was, and if so, to what an extent social unrest in the People’s Republic of Poland and the removal of Władysław Gomułka from power perceived as a threat to the just initiated process of rapprochement on the Warsaw–Bonn line? To what an extent did the publications in dailies and weeklies differ from each other? Finally, the question is whether the press appearing in the Federal Republic of Germany published information on reactions of the public of this country, acts of solidarity, or voices of condemnation addressed to the authorities in Warsaw? The study undertook a critical analysis of texts describing the events of December 1970, establishing the chronology of these events. This analysis was also comparative in nature, as the content of the articles was compared with the former researchers’ findings on the course of individual days of the December tragedy. No less important for this text was the linguistic analysis, aimed at indicating to what an extent reports and columns regarding the situation in Poland were emotionally loaded, and to what an extent they constituted substantive, emotionless political analyzes. The next research method used in the presented research was the quantitative method. Its application made it possible to determine the number of articles referring to events in Poland and to indicate specific days when they had appeared in individual dailies and weeklies. The results of the query and analysis of press articles indicate that, despite the information blockade, journalists managed to map, with a high degree of vagueness, the real course of workers’ protests, especially their causes and the actions of the authorities leading to the brutal suppression. From the point of view of the West German editors, reports obtained from journalists from Scandinavia who had managed to get to Szczecin and Słupsk played a significant role here. In this way, the descriptions of events from both cities quickly obscured the dramatic situation in Gdańsk and Gdynia, including the symbol of December 1970 – an episode related to the death of Zbyszek Godlewski (“Janek Wiśniewski”), which hardly appeared in the media in Germany. A separate research problem to which special attention should be paid are the numerous social and economic analyzes of the situation in Poland published in West German press in December 1970. They pointed to the economic premises as the main reasons for the outbreak of protests, while criticizing the policy of Gomułka, which had led Poland to the economic stagnation. A similar position was taken by the government of Chancellor Willy Brandt, who at first took an expectant attitude, and then, through the words of the government’s spokesman Conrad Ahlers, drew attention to the chronic economic problems of the so-called Eastern Bloc. Despite some anxiety, journalists calmly accepted events in Poland, especially the removal of Gomułka from power and him being replaced by Edward Gierek. It was anticipated that the new Polish leader would continue the policy of rapprochement with Germany, and more broadly with the West.

Opis:
The commercially available metal-oxide TGS sensors are widely used in many applications due to the fact that they are inexpensive and considered to be reliable. However, they are partially selective and their responses are influenced by various factors, e.g. temperature or humidity level. Therefore, it is important to design a proper analysis system of the sensor responses. In this paper, the results of examinations of eight commercial TGS sensors combined in an array and measured over a period of a few months for the purpose of prediction of nitrogen dioxide concentration are presented. The measurements were performed at different relative humidity levels. PLS regression was employed as a method of quantitative analysis of the obtained sensor responses. The results of NO2 concentration prediction based on static and dynamic responses of sensors are compared. It is demonstrated that it is possible to predict the nitrogen dioxide concentration despite the influence of humidity.
