Opis:
In this paper, we present experimental results of spontaneous emission clamping in the threshold for vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) with oxide current confinement. We show that the spontaneous emission not wholly clamps in the threshold. We propose a new method for determining the threshold current value using the study of the clamping phenomena. This method has an advantage over the commonly used methods in the accuracy because the current of the spontaneous emission clamping is betted defined than the current of the slope change of the stimulated emission light-current curve. The estimated uncertainty of the method is no more than 20 μA.

Kradzieże drewna zdarzają się zarówno na terenach publicznych, jak i prywatnych, ale najtrudniej jest zapobiec nielegalnej wycince drzew na dużych obszarach leśnych. Gdy prowadzący dochodzenie mają do czynienia z drewnem, co do którego istnieje podejrzenie, że pochodzi z kradzieży, istnieje możliwość dopasowania ściętych kłód do pniaków pozostałych w lesie. Podczas ścinania drzewa operator pilarki może zmieniać ustawienie piły, co powoduje powstawanie różnych wzorów bruzd wynikających z kierunku ruchu piły na ściętej powierzchni drzewa. W ramach badania pobrano 25 próbek z niedawno ściętego drzewa. Każda próbka miała około 3–6 cm grubości i około 11–15 cm średnicy. Do wycinania próbek użyto pilarki spalinowej Stihl Model 290 z łańcuchem rębaka na prowadnicy o długości 50 cm. Zbadano pięćdziesiąt odciętych końców drewna pod kątem zmian kierunku bruzd. Opracowano system klasyfikacji umożliwiający scharakteryzowanie poszczególnych wzorów.
While timber thefts occur on both public and private lands, it is difficult to prevent illegal cutting of timber in large forested areas. However, when investigators encounter suspected stolen logs, it may be possible to match the cut ends of the logs to stumps in the forest. While cutting a tree, a chainsaw operator may change saw positions so different directional striation patterns on the cut end of a tree may be produced. In this study, 25 samples were cut from a recently harvested tree. Each sample was ~ 3–6 cm in thickness and approximately 11–15 cm in diameter. A Stihl Model 290 gasoline powered chainsaw with a chipper chain equipped with a 50 cm bar was used to cut the samples. Fifty cut ends were examined for directional striation changes on the cut end. A classification system was devised to characterize the different patterns.

Recent advances at Institute of Grassland and Environmental Research (Aberystwyth, U.K.) in cytogenetics of the Lolium/Festuca complex places us in the advantageous position of being able to map genes of agronomic importance onto chromosome arms using fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). The ability to physically map genes leads to the capability for "dissecting" quantitative traits into their different components and will lead to better understanding of the complex physiological processes involved and the identification of their genetic control. By tagging genes of interest, using molecular and morphological markers, it will be possible to select and combine suites of desirable genes in a single genotype and thus produce novel cultivars by conventional breeding procedures. Programmes for introgression depend on the relationships between species and on levels of chromosome pairing. Phylogenetic relationships within the Lolium/Festuca complex are being determined using both genomic in situ hybridization (GISH) and FISH. With recent advances in genetic manipulation within the Lolium/Festuca complex, opportunities now arise for gene transfer from Lolium and Festuca species into other important agricultural crops.

Opis:
Diaphragm walls are deep embedded earth retaining structures. They also act as a part of the foundation. Geotechnical codes of practice from various countries provide procedures for the analysis of deep foundations. Not many standards are available that directly regulate the analysis of diaphragm walls. This paper compares the analysis of diaphragm walls performed using the foundation codes of different countries. Codes including EN 1997-1, BS 8002, BS 8004, BS EN 1538, AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications, AS 4678, AS 5100.3, Canadian Foundation Engineering Manual, CAN/CSA S6, IS 9556 and IS 4651 are chosen for the study. Numerical studies and calculations are done using the finite element software Plaxis 2d. Comparative study is performed based on the values of displacements and the forces developed. Study also evaluates the effect of differences in partial safety factors. The outcome of research emphasises the need for development of comprehensive analysis procedures.

The growing importance of batch processes has recently targeted attention on the problem of rising the performance of batch operations. However, there's a low degree of automation of batch units in the present scenario. Fuzzy logic could be a fantastic human idea, doubtless applicable to a good vary of processes and tasks that need human intuition and knowledge. Fuzzy logic are often applied by means of software, dedicated controllers, or fuzzy microprocessors. Under conventional control, the average reflux rate enforced on a batch process was over the average reflux rate enforced with fuzzy algorithms, that is our planned methodology.

Many dual frame estimators have been proposed in the statistics literature. Some of these estimators are theoretically optimal but hard to apply in practice, whereas others are applicable but have larger variances than the first group. In this paper, a Joint Calibration Estimator (JCE) is proposed that is simple to apply in practice and meets many desirable properties for dual frame estimators. The JCE is asymptotically design unbiased conditional on the strong relationship between the estimation variable and the auxiliary variables employed in the calibration. The JCE achieves better performance when the auxiliary variables can fully explain the variability in the study variables or at least when the auxiliary variables are strong correlates of the estimation variables. As opposed to the standard dual frame estimators, the JCE does not require domain membership information. Even if included in the JCE auxiliary variables, the effect of the randomly misclassified domains does not exceed the random measurement error effect. Therefore, the JCE tends to be robust for the misclassified domains if included in the auxiliary variables. Meanwhile, the misclassified domains can significantly affect the unbiasedness of the standard dual frame estimators as proved theoretically and empirically in this paper.
