Opis:
Modeling of liquid sloshing inside partly filled ships' tanks can be carried out by a variety of methods. The simplest and perhaps the less reliable is a quasi-static approach which is, however, recommended in the Intact Stability Code by the International Maritime Organization. Hence the only advantage of the static estimation of liquid sloshing is simplicity of calculations, the research into the application of CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) was performed in Department of Ship Operation at Gdynia Maritime University. The paper presents results of numerical simulations o f a liquid sloshing phenomenon performed by means of a code Fluent. The research was focused on a computation of the heeling moment affecting stability of a vessel, especially on the dynamic effects, which are omitted in obligatory intact ship's stability regulations nowadays. The computed distributions of dynamic pressures on tank walls were carried out for large oscillation amplitude which is characteristic for stormy sea conditions. Ali the simulations were computed in 3D mode and they provide high accuracy results. A case study described in the paper enables realistic comparison of the results of CFD liquid sloshing simulations and the simple statics based computations. The study reveals some weaknesses of the contemporary quasi-static approach towards the free surface effect and it might be the contribution to the more sophisticated estimation of the ship's stability than it is achieved nowadays.

Opis:
The matter of the paper refers to the dynamic stability of a vessel as an important factor affecting her safety at seaway. Ship 's seakeeping behaviour, which comprises the notion of her stability, is one of the researched key issues leading to the increase in understanding of the safety qualifying factors. Liquid sloshing phenomenon is a result of partly filled tank motions. As a tank moves, it supplies the energy to induce and sustain the fluid motion. The dynamic behaviour of a vessel at seaway is considerably affected by the dynamics of free liquid surfaces, therefore the influence of fluid movement taking place in partly filled tanks on the safety of ship 's exploitation process is emphasized. The paper presents the results of the experimental research and the numerical simulation of the sloshing phenomenon. The research was focused on the computation of the heeling moment affecting the stability of a vessel, especially dynamic effects, which are omitted in obligatory intact ship 's stability regulations nowadays. The experiment performed in the course of the research was carried out in Department of Ship Operation at Gdynia Maritime University. The unique test apparatus was designed and built. It enables to measure dynamic pressures on model tank walls for large oscillation amplitudes, which are characteristic for stormy sea conditions. The numerical simulations of liquid sloshing phenomenon, took into account the viscosity of liquid and the turbulence of considered flows. All the simulations were computed in 3D mode and they provide high accuracy results. The spatial distribution of dynamic pressures on model tank walls enables computation of heeling moment due to liquid sloshing which affects ship 's stability. Further analysis of obtained moments was carried out. The study may be the contribution to the more sophisticated estimation of the ship's stability than it is achieved nowadays.

Opis:
Since safety of navigation is related to the stability performance of a ship, the transverse stability is routinely calculated and measured. One of the crucial experimental approach is a roll decay test. Although, an obtained result of the roll decay test carried out on the full-scale ship needs to be compared to a benchmark enabling an estimation of the relevant stability. Nowadays such a benchmark is just based on the simplified GM-based IMO-recommended formula. This research aims at the more sophisticated method of ship’s natural period of roll estimation and thus her stability assessment. The CFD (computational fluid dynamics) technique is applied and the result of the free roll simulation is compared to the solution of a roll equation. The one degree-of-freedom roll equation is applied with regard to the nonlinear ship righting moment and the nonlinear damping moment obtained according to Ikeda’s method. The six degrees-of-freedom simulation of ship’s roll decay test was carried out by the use of FlowVision code utilizing the Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equation with regard to the turbulent flows based on the eddy viscosity concept. The semi-empirical k-ε turbulence model was applied. Thereby, the CFD-based approach allows to get rid of any assumptions regarding the value of the damping coefficient, which is an advantage over the roll equation based approach.

Paper describes a research into ship’s squat phenomenon which is related to the safe entering of large ships into contemporary existing sea harbors. As the significant research effort in ship hydromechanics is devoted in recent years to the practical navigation problems, the Authors follow this trend and addressed the squat by means of CFD numerical simulations. The analysis of 6 DOF ship motion was performed, including the effects of shallow water, horizontal restrictions, extend of a channel and especially ship squat during passing by maneuver at a waterway. An exemplary case-study is carried out for a large container vessel. The obtained results were experimentally verified by comparison to one German experiment and own models tests. Such complex approach is a novelty worldwide.

Opis:
The paper presents selected problems of the conversion of the Toyota Tundra truck into an amphibious craft. The vehicle was built as a functional model of the mobile system for command, observation, detection and communication, devised within the research and development project No. 0008R/ T00/2010/11. The scope of the construction works aimed at adapting the vehicle for staying and moving in water has been described. The design works included optimisation of the shape of the immersed part of the watercraft hull while at the same time trying to achieve optimum water flow to the Schottel Pump- Jet propeller, which was proposed as the main water propulsion system. The optimisation was ensured with the use of computer tools as well as numerical fluid mechanics and geometry modelIing methods. Thanks to the computations, the influence of the complicated geometry of vehicle chassis and buoyancy chambers on the stability and power-resistance characteristics and the wave system of the modelled shape when moving in water could be taken into account. Based on the computer model developed, the conversion of the Toyota Tundra vehicle was done, which included the adding of buoyancy chambers and the protection of vehicle driving systems and cab from water penetration. Afterwards, the vehicle having been converted was subjected to manoeuvring triais and tests to determine the maximum floating speed and efficiency of the water propulsion system in order to verify the computations and to test the conversion carried out.
W artykule zostały przedstawione wybrane problemy związane z przebudową samochodu Toyota Tundra na pojazd amfibijny. Pojazd ten został zbudowany jako model funkcjonalny mobilnego systemu dowodzenia, obserwacji, rozpoznania i łączności opracowanego w ramach projektu rozwojowego nr 0008R/T00/2010/11. Omówiono zakres prac konstrukcyjnych związanych z przystosowaniem pojazdu do przebywania i ruchu w wodzie. Prace projektowe obejmowały optymalizację kształtu części zanurzonej pojazdu z uwzględnieniem dopływu wody do pompy strumieniowej . Pump-Jet firmy Schottel jako napędu głównego w wodzie. Optymalizacji dokonano przy pomocy narzędzi komputerowych wykorzystujących numeryczną mechanikę płynów i modelowanie geometrii. Dzięki tym obliczeniom było możliwe uwzględnienie wpływu skomplikowanej geometrii podwozia i komór wypornościowych na charakterystyki statecznościowe, właściwości oporowo napędowe i układ falowy podczas ruch w wodzie zamodelowanego wcześniej kształtu. Na podstawie wypracowanego modelu komputerowego wykonano przebudowę pojazdu Toyota Tundra obejmującą dodanie komór wypornościowych oraz zabezpieczenie układów napędowych i kabiny przed dostaniem się wody. W dalszej kolejności przebudowany pojazd poddano próbom manewrowym, prędkości maksymalnej i sprawności napędu wodnego dla weryfikacji obliczeń i przetestowania dokonanej przebudowy.

Opis:
The paper presents some results on investigations concerning development of a hybrid model for assessment of performance of the ro-ro ships in damaged conditions. The model is devoted towards assessing the performance of the damaged ro-ro ships at the preliminary stage of design. The key problems associated with preparing of such the model are associated with working out a method of assessment of the damaged ro-ro ships performance, investigating all the phenomena which associated with the flooding process of the damaged ro-ro ships and preparing the model itself. Introducing the method of assessment of the damaged ro-ro ships performance it has been assumed that there is a dependence between the arrangement of internal spaces of a ro-ro ship and flooding process. The major phenomena which have been decided to take into account when considering flooding of the ro-ro ships are the flooding understood as the flow of external water into the data damaged compartment, impact of the flooding water on the ship structure and damaged ro-ro ship motion. Knowing the damaged ro-ro ship motion characteristics in time domain it is relatively easy to assess the damaged ro-ro ship performance according to the heeling angle and assess the ro-ro ship design according to the data arrangement of internal spaces. The last research issue is to investigate if the proposed model may be appropriate tool for assessing the performance of the ro-ro ships in damaged conditions at the preliminary stage of design. The aim of this paper is to show how to incorporate the dynamics of the damaged ro-ro ships when assessing the ship performance and safety at the preliminary stage of design. The basic information on the model for estimation of the damaged ro-ro ship behavior during the flooding process is presented. The complexity of this model is shown depending on the approach applied to consider the flooding process itself. The model is devoted towards assessment of performance of the damaged ro-ro ships and it is still under the development according to a Ph.D. research at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering Gdańsk University of Technology.

Opis:
The paper presents an innovative steering system for a river push barge dedicated for operation in environmentally sensitive inland waterways. Development of the inland waterborne transport in Poland is dependent on the exploitation of rivers which can be adapted to navigation in the limited range because a high percent of their length is classified within special environment protection areas of Natura 2000 network. This is now the main reason that their better exploitation cannot be obtained without an introduction of a new generation of waterborne environment friendly inland units. In naturally winding rivers with differing and rapidly changing depths and widths it is important to equip a push barge with an efficient steering system that has a low environmental impact. The innovative steering system proposed in the paper is composed of main steering devices located at the pusher stern, auxiliary steering devices installed on the barge bow and a mechanical coupling system.

Opis:
Liquid sloshing phenomenon is a result of partly filled tank motions. As a tank moves, it supplies energy to induce and sustain a fluid motion. Both the liquid motion and its effects are called sloshing. The interaction between ship’s tank structure and water sloshing inside the tank consists in the constant transmission of energy. As the ship rolls, the walls of a partly filled tank induce the movement of water. Liquid sloshing phenomenon occurring in partly filled ships tanks directly affects the stability of the vessel. However, only static calculations are carried out onboard ships nowadays and static transfer of liquid weight is taken into account in the course of routine stability calculation and assessment. Since previous researches reveal the necessity of dynamic approach towards liquid movement onboard ships, the investigation is focused on problems related to time dependent wave-type phenomena. This aspect is omitted in the course of standard ship stability calculations. The set of numerical simulations of liquid sloshing taking place in moving tanks is carried out. Among many obtained characteristics, the heeling moment due to sloshing is emphasized and thoroughly investigated. The realistic range of possible metacentric heights and rolling periods is examined. The influence of ship’s rolling period on the heeling moment due to liquid sloshing is analyzed for one exemplary seagoing vessel as a case study. However, the conclusions can be generalized to some degree and comprise many other ships.

Opis:
The commonly discussed main features of maritime transport are usually its safety and effectiveness. One of the most critical features of seagoing ships related to her safety is stability influencing ship's overall sea keeping performance. Vessels' stability calculation and evaluation, made on-board nowadays, is based on the stability criteria published by the ship’s classification societies. According to the IMO recommendations, the righting lever curve should be corrected for the effect of free surfaces of liquids in tanks. IMO-recommended methods of free surface correction calculation consider the static attitude towards the liquid sloshing phenomenon only. They also do not consider the location of the tank within the hull of the ship and the location of a rolling axis. The more precise and more realistic approach towards liquid movement is complex analysis of liquid sloshing phenomenon. As liquid sloshing taking part in partly filled ship's tanks is an important element affecting safety of maritime transportation process, there is a need for detailed analyses related to crucial parameters of the considered phenomenon. The paper is focused on an influence of tank's filling level on effects of aroused and sustained movement of ballast water, fuel and other liquids carried onboard ships. Both static and dynamic approaches towards the problem are utilized. The analytical methods for liquid weight transfer calculation and numerical simulations of the liquid sloshing phenomenon are applied. The simulations of liquid sloshing are based on Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stockes equation and they take into account the viscosity of liquid. The resultant heeling moment is decomposed into components enabling extraction of dynamical component differentiating the applied method from old static ones. The results of the study contribute to more precise ship safety evaluation.

The experiment and CFD simulations were performed by using the full scale prototype to eliminate the scale effect. The towing tank tests confirmed the results of numerical computations. The compatibility of the results of numerical and experimental tests was high mainly because the new life raft does not deform under the hydrodynamic and aerodynamic loads. The characteristics similar to rigid body behaviour result mainly from a new construction and materials used for manufacturing the life raft.
