    The article concerns the opposition */ʃ, ʒ/ ←→ */r/ in central Cassubian dialects. Th e existing literature does not answer the question whether the opposition has been retained. Descriptions of the continuants */ʃ, ʒ, r/ contradict one another and the disappearance of the vibration of */r/ is regarded, unjustifi ably, as a phonological identifi cation of */r/ with */ʃ, ʒ/. Even when synchronic diff erences are identifi ed, the existing phonological interpretations are unsatisfactory. Contemporary central Cassubian data prove that the opposition continues to exist. */r/ is consistently realised as [ʂ, ʐ], while */ʃ, ʒ/ is realised optionally as [ʃ, ʒ] or [ʂ, ʐ]. Th e shift of the continuants */ʃ, ʒ/ towards clear palatalisation is most probably a result of the transfer [r] → [ʂ, ʐ].

    This article is dedicated to the vocalism of the contemporary Żarnowiec dialect (spoken in Wierzchucino and Nadole). On the one hand, an acoustic and phonetic analysis has identified certain phonetic archaisms (like the central or frontal and central pronunciation of /u/) and has aided in-depth descriptions of sounds previously referred to in a very imprecise way (*/aː/ pronounced as a near-close rounded vowel, central, [ɵ] type). On the other hand, the analysis has provided grounds for acknowledging the important phonetic changes which have occurred in the Kashubian dialect in the past few decades; some of these consist in completing specific phenomena. These include the general dissemination of the diphthongal pronunciation of stressed /e, o, ɛ, ɔ/, the highly back and rounded pronunciation of /ɒ/, the front and open pronunciation of /æ/ in Nadole and the extended scope of the phonological and phonetic reduction of non-stressed vowels (the phonemes /ɘ̟, ɛ, æ/ are always, /ɵ, e/ nearly always and /i/ is relatively rarely pronounced in the same way when not stressed). The result of this reduction is a distinctly centralized vowel or a central vowel of the [ɜ] type. From the phonological point of view, attention should be paid primarily to the ultimate loss of nasal vowel phonemes. Contrary to existing descriptions, the vocal continuant */ã/ has not been merged phonologically with /e/ but a new oral phoneme /ɘ̟/ has been established. It is worth emphasizing that a majority of the identified changes do not bring the dialect closer to the Polish language, rather, they take it further away from it.

    This article provides an extended synopsis of the author’s Ph.D. thesis Wokalowy system hornjoserbskeje rěče přitomnosće. The first part is devoted to selected methodology-related issues (e.g. the method of collecting recordings, approach to not adopted German words, the number of phonetic units researched). In part two, the author establishes an inventory of vowel phonemes of contemporary Upper Lusatian and the fundamental rules of reduction. Based on distribution analyses, including morpho(no)logical facts, the skill of identification and isolated pronunciation of vowel sounds as well as development trends, ten phonemes: /i, ɪ, e, ɛ, a, ɨ, ɔ, o, ʊ, u/ have been adopted in this article. In the third part, the author presents the results of acoustic research (with respect to timbre and inherent length, depending on accent and other factors).To a large extent, these results present an entirely different picture from the existing postulates based on auditive analyses. On top of that, certain linguistic universals are confirmed here. The last part offers a set of distinctive features. Following acoustic research, the author decided to adopt a binary [peripheral] feature and to apply gradual characteristics.

    The aim of the paper is to provide a phonetic and phonological description of the vowel system of the Dąbrówka Wielkopolska dialect. The analysed material revealed the very good retention of the original dialectal phenomena (e.g. the diphthongal pronunciation of *[ɨ], diversity of monophthongal and diphthongal variants of */o/, or two allophones of /u/ conditioned by the preceding consonant). The acoustic analyses provide a precise phonetic description of the dialect’s vowels and revisions to the previous descriptions (e.g. the allophone of /u/ after coronal and palatal consonants is not only lowered, but also centralised, the reflexes of */eː, eN, ẽ/ after palatals are distinct from /i/, the reflex of */aː/ is sometimes lower than [ɔ], but never reaches the height of [ɒ]). Farther, the perceptive and acoustic analyses revealed a – hitherto unnoticed – opposition between the reflexes of */eː/ on the one hand, and the reflexes of */e/ before /N/ and the vocalic reflexes of */ẽ/ on the other, and, consequently, made it possible to discover a “new” vowel phoneme.
    W niniejszym artykule przedstawiono akustyczno-fonetyczną i fonologiczną analizę samogłosek współczesnej gwary Dąbrówki Wielkopolskiej. W przebadanym materiale stwierdzono bardzo dobre zachowanie fonetycznych cech gwarowych (np. dyftongicznej wymowy *[ɨ], bogactwa wariantów dyftongicznych i monoftongicznych */o/ czy uwarunkowanej sąsiedztwem lewostronnym alofonii /u/). Analiza akustyczna pozwoliła na precyzyjną charakterystykę głosek gwary i rewizję dotychczasowych opisów (np. alofon /u/ po koronalnych i palatalnych jest nie tylko obniżony, ale również scentralizowany, kontynuanty */eː, eN, ẽ/ po miękkich zachowują odrębność od /i/, kontynuant */aː/ bywa nieco obniżony w stosunku do [ɔ], ale nie osiąga poziomu [ɒ]). Ponadto analizy audytywne i akustyczne umożliwiły wykazanie niezauważonej dotychczas opozycji pomiędzy kontynuantem */eː/ a kontynuantem /e/ przed /N/ i ustnym kontynuantem */ẽ/, a w konsekwencji odkrycie „nowego” fonemu samogłoskowego.

    The paper is devoted to the development of the former nasal vowels in the Kashubian dialect of Strzepcz. Taking into consideration modern analyses of their pronunciation in other Kashubian dialects, one can assume that older descriptions are highly outdated. The paper is based on the auditory analysis of over 450 realisations of the original nasal vowels in various contexts with a support of the visual analyses of spectrograms and auxiliary acoustic measurements. There were four informants: two representing the middle generation (a man and a woman) and two (a man and a woman) from the older generation.A synchronous nasality occurred in only 1,9% of realisations (without taking account of *[ɑ̃] at the end of the word where it is denasalized without exception) and only in the case of *[õ] in the front of fricative consonants. In 3,7% of realizations a full denasalisation was observed. In 94,4% of cases occurred an asynchronous nasality with a vowel and following nasal consonant or a glide. The vocalic (syllabic) segment is in over 80% of asynchronous realisations fully denasalised. The observed situation is diametrically different from those presented in the older descriptions. From the phonological point of view on should analyse the original nasal vowels as sequences of /V/ and underlying glide /w̃/.
    Artykuł poświęcony jest wymowie dawnych samogłosek nosowych w gwarze Strzepcza. Ostatnie oryginalne opracowania tego zagadnienia pochodzą sprzed kilkudziesięciu lat i w świetle współczesnych opisów innych obszarów gwarowych można było założyć ich co najmniej znaczną dezaktualizację. Podstawą opisu była audytywna analiza ponad 450 realizacji dawnych nosówek w różnych pozycjach fonetycznych, wsparta wzrokową analizą spektrogramów oraz pomocniczymi pomiarami akustycznymi. Informatorami były cztery osoby (mężczyzna i kobieta w wieku średnim oraz mężczyzna i kobieta w wieku starszym). Wymowa synchroniczna wystąpiła tylko w 1,9% przypadków (bez uwzględnienia poświadczeń wygłosowego *[ɑ̃], które ulega konsekwentnej denazalizacji), w dodatku wyłącznie przed szczelinowymi. Denazalizacja charakteryzuje 3,7% wszystkich realizacji. W 94,4% przypadków zarejestrowano jakąś formę asynchronii, czyli wymowę z wyodrębnioną spółgłoską nosową lub glajdem. W ponad 80% realizacji asynchronicznych dochodzi do całkowitego odnosowienia segmentu wokalicznego (zgłoskotwórczego). Stanowi to diametralną różnicę w stosunku do starszych opracowań. Z fonologicznego punktu widzenia należy przyjąć na miejscu dawnych samogłosek nosowych sekwencje dwufonemowe z /w̃/ jako kontynuantem nosowości.

    The paper is devoted to the reflexes of the old contrast between */u/ and */uː/after labials and velars and in a front position in a word in the Kashubian dialect spoken in Jastarnia. According to descriptions from the late 19th century and the early 20th century, the contrast was preserved at the beginning of a word and in the middle of a word as contrasted with the quantity and quality (with a probable weakening of the first component of the contrast): [u̯ɘ̟] : [u(ː)]. At the end of the word, the contrast was weak and disappeared. According to sources from the mid-20th century, the contrast has been entirely lost in all the positions and [u̯ɘ̟] and [u] are merely free variants of one phoneme /u/. However, an analysis of contemporary material shows clearly that the old contrast was preserved word-initially and word-internally with some cases of simple morphological levelling. Two phonemes, /ʉ/ and /u/, need to be assumed. The current system is strongly correlated with a system documented in the oldest descriptions and could not develop secondarily from a hypothetical system which would merge */u/ and */uː/ to any extent exceeding a free variation in some forms while morphological levelling took place. It seems that the conclusions offered in the publications from the mid-20th century (refuting the existence of the contrast) had an irrational (personal and maybe national) background.

    The article discusses the position of the Luzino dialect among Kashubian dialects in the light of phonetic and phonological features. The analysis takes into account eleven vowel features, one consonant feature and two prosodical features. A significant part of the discussed phenomena are the recent phenomena that have gone unnoticed, or been dealt with only marginally in the existing literature on the subject. One archaism links the Luzino dialect with the core central Kashubian area, but it is differentiated by seven innovations. The peripheral central Kashubian dialects indicate stronger relationships with the area of Luzino (one important archaism and one significant north Kashubian innovation). Three archaisms and nine innovations link the Luzino dialect withthe north Kashubian area. Two vocal changes are typical only of the discussed area, and differentiate it from northern as well as southern Kashubian. From the phonetic and phonological point of view, the Luzino dialect should undoubtedly be classified as a marginal north Kashubian dialect.

    Descriptions of the Kashubian sound system from the middle of the 20th allow an assumption that [r̝] (*[rʲ]) as such is currently entirely lost in the Kashubian linguistic area. However, it turns out that in Jastarnia there are still speakers that preserve [r̝] in their pronunciation with a pretty high frequency (ca. 30% of all possible cases). The paper gives basic statistical and phonetic data on the current pronunciation of this consonant and tries to answer the question about reasons of the discrepancy between the older descriptions and the real state of affairs.
    Opisy kaszubskiego systemu dźwiękowego z połowy 20 wieku pozwalają zakładać, że that [r̝] (*[rʲ]) jako takie nie zachowało się na kaszubskich obszarze językowym zupełnie. Okazuje się jednak, że w Jastarni niektórzy użytkownicy miejscowej gwary nadal zachowują ten dźwięk z dość wysoką częstotliwością (ok. 30% wszystkich możliwych przypadków). Niniejszy artykuł prezentuje podstawowe dane statystyczne i fonetyczne co do wymowy tej spółgłoski we współczesnym materiale oraz podejmuje próbę określenia przyczyn sprzeczności pomiędzy starszymi opisami a faktycznym stanem rzeczy.

    The aim of the present paper is to establish, if the reflexes of *[kj, gj] in Central Kashubian (previously ʨ,ʥ], today [ʧ,ʤ] can be interpreted as allophones of /k,g/ betofe front vowels. This widespread hypothesis is supported by some very regular alternations. It is shown that the previously postulated phonological rule is not acceptable. There still exist some cases, where /k,g/ do not undergo palatalization and assibilation before front vowels, and for which no convincing additional rules can be established ) before the final -em, before the suffix -iw(a)-, in the equivalent of the Polish lexeme giąć, in some loanwords, which cannot be recognized as a result of codeswitching). In this case one hat to accept the existence of distinct phonemes /ʨ,ʥ/. In contemporary Central Kashubian the reflexes of *[kj, gj] underwent coalescence with these of *[ʧ,ʤ]. The latter do not show any significant distributive restrictions, and the mentioned phonological problem is in this case virtually irrelevant for the description of the contemporary stage of the language.

    This article is yet another contribution to a discussion on a grammar handbook on Kashubian written by Hanna Makurat (2016) and, directly, a reply to her text published in edition 53 of the SFPS. First and foremost, it is a presentation of the history of the discussion of Gramatika… in a context of extra-content strategies employed by the author in the dispute that has arisen. Next, 13 linguistic phenomena have been presented (related to spelling, phonetics, morphology, vocabulary and syntax) in relation to which Hanna Makurat clearly referred to her opponents’ criticism in her text published in the SFPS. An analysis has shown that in 12 of them, the reviewers’ comments were fully justified. Last but not least, general and methodological issues are touched upon with reference to grammar itself and the discussion of it to date.
