Opis:: The subject of this presentation is the attempt to defi ne and to present the origins, socio-cultural content and the evolution of The Polish Mother myth, present in the polish national consciousness. The author tries to show how this myth was born, what functions it fulfi lled and what forms it took in the changing historical and social reality, from the moment of loss of independence, through a period of real socialism, until the present day. The impact of this myth in the lives of real women and their motherhood is taken into consideration. Then, the author comparing the results of the latest polish sociological rese-arches on the family and its transformation, and transformation of value systems together with theories about the specifi cs of life in the period of postmodernity, wonders whether it’s time to deconstruct the myth of The Polish Mother, because it does not fi t the conditions of today’s world, which is characterized, above all, by the apotheosis of individuality, self--realization and freedom, or perhaps in polish society there is still strong traditionalism in thinking about motherhood, and the myth of The Polish Mother is still alive?

Opis:: This paper is an attempt to present the origins, socio-cultural content and the evolution of the myth of the Polish Mother, which is lodged in the Polish national consciousness. The author tries to show how this myth was created, what functions it has fulfilled and what forms it has taken in light of the changing historical and social circumstances, from the moment Poland lost independence, through the period of real socialism, until the present day. This essay examines the impact of this myth on the lives of real women and their perception of motherhood. The author compares and confronts the results of the latest Polish sociological studies of family life and its transformation with the transformation of value systems and theories about the particulars of life in the period of postmodernity to ask whether it is high time to bring down the myth of the Polish Mother on the grounds that it does not apply to the conditions of today’s world of individuality, self-realization and freedom, or whether to accept the fact that Poles still have a traditional attitude towards motherhood and thus the myth of the Polish Mother is still valid.

Opis:: The population is ageing and, according to demographers, this phenomenon will be subject to even greater intensification. Despite the fact that increasingly we recognizes the specific problems of people in the autumn of life, we still have to deal with ageism, and still topics such as senior’s sexuality remains taboo. In addition, the prevailing consumerism and the cult of youth and body seems to detract any possible discussion on the margins of social life. Besides, existence of numerous myths and stereotypes preserve not always truthful picture of the sexual activity of older people. At the same time, social sciences more often covers necessity of learning both to old age, in old age, and that education’s task should be breaking the taboos of various kinds, which relates to seniors. Moreover, the need for education that addresses both older people themselves and the rest of society, in shaping the attitude of understanding and acceptance, to combat stereotypes and ignorance of the problems affecting this age group, which in turn has the effect of improving the quality of their lives, becomes more apparent lately. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate that the taboo of senior’s sexuality should become the subject of interest, the challenge for contemporary geragogics. The inspiration for this writing were interviews with seniors, so that this issue is outlined, based on the perspective of those concerned. Populacja się starzeje i - zdaniem demografów - zjawisko to będzie podlegało jeszcze większej intensyfikacji. Pomimo tego, że coraz wyraźniej dostrzegamy specyficzne problemy ludzi na jesieni życia, wciąż mamy do czynienia z dyskryminacją ze względu na wiek, a tematy takie jak seksualność seniora pozostają tematem tabu. Ponadto dominujący konsumpcjonizm oraz kult młodości i ciała zdają się umniejszać wszelkie możliwe dyskusje znajdujące się na marginesie życia społecznego. Dodatkowo, istnienie licznych mitów i stereotypów nie zawsze odzwierciedla prawdziwy obraz aktywności seksualnej osób starszych. Jednocześnie nauki społeczne częściej obejmują konieczność uczenia się zarówno do osiągnięcia starości, jak i na samą starość, a zadaniem edukacji powinno być przełamywanie różnego rodzaju tabu, które dotyczy seniorów. Ponadto potrzeba edukacji skierowanej zarówno do osób starszych, jak i do reszty społeczeństwa, do kształtowania postawy zrozumienia i akceptacji, do zwalczania stereotypów i ignorowania problemów dotykających tę grupę wiekową, co z kolei wpływa na poprawę jakości ich życia, staje się bardziej widoczne w ostatnim czasie. Celem tego artykułu jest wykazanie, że tabu seksualności seniora powinno stać się przedmiotem zainteresowania, wyzwaniem dla współczesnej geragogiki. Inspiracją do napisania tego tekstu były wywiady z seniorami.
