Opis:
X-ray-diffraction microstructural analysis was performed for corundum powders produced from Bayer aluminium hydroxides in different ways and for high purity corundum powders produced from other raw materials. Crystalline microstructure characterised by prevalent crystallite shape, volume-weighted crystallite size distribution and second-order crystalline lattice strain distribution was determined through modelling crystallite shapes as hexagonal prisms, with the resulting mean volume-weighted standardised crystallite size in the range 406-1941 Å, height-to-base-diagonal ratio in the range 0.68-0.94 and the mean-absolute second-order strain in the range 0.028-0.087%. Crystallite size distributions were found to be well approximated as bimodal logarithmic-normal ones and consequently four types of microstructure were recognized as depending on precursors and methods of production.

Opis:
Kaolinite and montmorillonite are two clay minerals with different structures: dioctahedral 1:1 without layer charge and dioctahedral 2:1 with low layer charge. X-ray-diffraction microstructural analysis of two fractions of two reference clays (with kaolinite or montmorillonite) from the Clay Minerals Society Source Clay Repository were performed by the Voigt function method to provide microstructural data not available in the baseline studies of this Repository. A rough agreement was found between crystallite sizes determined from X-ray diffraction patterns and from images by field-emission scanning electron microscopy. In addition, the influence of swelling by ethylene-glycol on crystallite size was studied by the mentioned method. Two factors were found to affect the crystallite size variation in ethylene-glycol-treated clay minerals: (i) the increase of the unit cell in [001] direction due to the interlayer absorption of ethylene glycol molecules in the case of swelling minerals and (ii) the physisorption at the surfaces of the crystallites. Both effects operate in the case of montmorillonite, whereas just the latter one is expected in kaolinite.

Opis:
GaInNAs bulk-like layers ( ≈ 20% In and ≈ 3% N) grown on GaAs substrate with various crystallographic orientations have been studied by micro-photoluminescence at low temperatures for a broad range of excitation conditions. In addition to photoluminescence peaks, which are associated with heavy- and light-hole free exciton recombination, a band of sharp lines was observed below the fundamental free exciton transition at low excitation. It shows that the localized emission which is typical of this alloy at low temperatures is composed of individual narrow photoluminescence lines which are associated with the recombination of single excitons. They can be localized on various local potential minima including those originating from the alloy content fluctuations and/or deep acceptor(donor)-like complexes.

Opis:
The cultivation system with cover crops as living mulches is growing in importance in the worldwide agriculture as it combines an economical effect with pro-ecological and soil protecting activities. The plant species tested in the research were not frost resistant: buckwheat, millet, white mustard and berseem clover. A control were the plots without cover crops. The intercrops were sown in the first decade of August, in autumn a grown biomass was a living mulch, and after being damaged by frost in spring, the mulch was covering ground surface. Winter garlic bulbs were planted in grown biomass of cover plants, in the first decade of September. In the first decade of November and in the first decade of April, the selected soil parameters were determined in the soil layer of 0–10 cm: actual soil moisture (%), soil bulk density (Mg · m–3), total porosity (%) and water stability of soil aggregates (%). The harvest of garlic was conducted in the first decade of July. Cover crops mulches had an influence on soil physical properties. In spring, the soil from plots with cover crops mulching characterized with the highest moisture, higher total porosity and soil aggregates stability as well as lower soil bulk density. In comparison to the control cultivation of winter garlic, without cover crops, the effect of plants used for mulching on marketable yield was not observed. Garlic plants intercropped with the white mustard mulch formed leaves and bulbs of higher weight in comparison to cultivation without cover crops.
