Opis:
This paper deals with magnetic anisotropy found in hard turned surfaces. The high magnetic anisotropy of the surface after hard turning operations occurs due to severe plastic deformation and high temperature, exceeding the Curie temperature in the cutting zone, followed by rapid cooling. The transformed microstructures of the surface, and stress anisotropy near the surface cause the magnetic anisotropy and magnetic domain reconfiguration. On the contrary, temperatures during grinding usually do not exceed Curie temperature and so the remarkable magnetic anisotropy after grinding operations in not found. The magnetic properties of the studied surfaces are analyzed by Barkhausen noise emission as well as magneto-optical methods. The results of these two techniques are used to study the magnetic anisotropy.

Opis:
Recently, we have shown that the approach of depth sensitivity of magneto-optic ellipsometry can be generalized to selectivity from different materials in nanostructures. We use the condition number as the figure of merit to quantify the magneto-optic selectivity to two different magnetic contributions in magnetic nanostructure. The method is demonstrated on nanostructures containing magnetically hard Fe particles in surface layer of soft FeNbB amorphous ribbon. We separated both magnetic contributions from measurement of hysteresis loops using magneto-optic Kerr effect in longitudinal configuration. Magneto-optic selectivity is discussed and theoretical model on the basis of effective medium is compared with experimental data of longitudinal magneto-optic Kerr effect depending on angle of incidence.

Opis:
Despite their common occurrence, the potential of coralline algae is not yet fully exploited in paleoecological reconstructions. The reasons are mainly grounded in the taxonomic inconsistency caused by poor preservation or insufficient knowledge of the type material of many species, and confusion derived from the difficult recognition of the coralline three-phased life cycle in the fossil record. Specimens of fossil coralline algae from newly collected samples, and historical Schaleková’s collection of middle Miocene Paratethyan limestone were studied under optical and scanning electron microscopes, revealing the occurrence of the asexuate, male gametangial, and carposporangial conceptacles of Mesophyllum crassiusculum here documented for the first time. Based on the recent emendation of Mesophyllum and consequent circumscription of the genera Mesophyllum sensu stricto and Melyvonnea, this is the first and oldest finding of a fossil Mesophyllum sensu stricto. Moreover, we provide further evidence of the preservation potential of important diagnostic characters, such as the shape of epithallial and subepithallial cells, the shape of the conceptacle roofs, the number and shape of pore canals lining cells in the multiporate roof of the asexuate conceptacle chambers. The identification of M. crassiusculum in the middle Miocene of central Paratethys would deserve further biogeographic and paleoclimatic considerations that, however, are prevented by the incomplete exploration of the Paratethyan fossil record and the need of revision of other important type collections of closely related species.

Opis:
Dramatic tectonic and sea level changes of the Central Paratethys realm during the Middle Miocene resulted in changes of the coastal and seabed morphology affecting the composition of the marine association and the distribution of the facies along the coast. Three different episodes (marine-terrestrial-marine) in the environmental evolution are interpreted. A lower marine unit (Badenian; Lower Serravallian) reflects organodetrital sedimentation on and around an algal bioherm. Low terrigenous input maërl facies of typical rhodalgal carbonate factory type characterise the top of the algal mound. On the slopes, a rim of rhodechfor facies separated the bioherm from the rest of the bottom which had a seagrass cover. This high-energy rhodechfor carbonate factory is described from the Central Paratethys realm for the first time. It is composed mostly of coralline algae (Mesophyllum, Lithothamnion, Spongites and Lithophyllum), benthic foraminifers (Elphidium crispum, Neoconorbina terquemi, Miniacina sp., Borelis melo), echinoids (cidaroid, spatangoid and diadematoid groups) and bryozoans. Uplift of the Malé Karpaty Mts. resulted in tectonic activity in the vicinity, documented by the presence of clastic dikes and normal faults in the profile studied. Subsequent fluvial and terrestrial sedimentation is represented by regolith, palaeosoil and channel body deposits set discordantly on the top of lagoonal deposits. Finally, the third episode is represented by the Sarmatian transgressive marine sequence, which is characterized by coarse pebbly deposit eroded from an uplifted pre-Neogene basement. The strata studied originated in a warm temperate climate around the Badenian–Sarmatian transition.
