Opis:
Cellular materials have found wide-spread attention in structural applications involving impact energy absorption. The choice of the most suitable density of a cellular material, for a particular impact application, is based on its mechanical response, which may be obtained through experimental tests and/or models. A current study is focused on prediction of a mechanical response of a wide range of densities of a cellular material using available experimental data of very few densities. Best fitting-parameters of four selected phenomenological models, to fit the available experimental response of three distinct aluminum foam densities, are evaluated. The relationship between the best-fitting parameters and density of the foam is established by using two types of functions. The first function is based on a power law relationship between each parameter and foam density ρ, while the second function assumes each parameter as a linear combination of ρn and ρ, where n is any real number. The former function is found reasonable in the cases of both parameter interpolation and extrapolation while the latter is found reasonable for a parameter interpolation only. The findings of a current study emphasize for a conscious approach during selection of density dependent laws for phenomenological model parameters to avoid any erroneous or misleading design decision.

Opis:
Deep learning has been successful in various domains including image recognition, speech recognition and natural language processing. However, the research on its application in graph mining is still in an early stage. Here we present Model R, a neural network model created to provide a deep learning approach to the link weight prediction problem. This model uses a node embedding technique that extracts node embeddings (knowledge of nodes) from the known links’ weights (relations between nodes) and uses this knowledge to predict the unknown links’ weights. We demonstrate the power of Model R through experiments and compare it with the stochastic block model and its derivatives. Model R shows that deep learning can be successfully applied to link weight prediction and it outperforms stochastic block model and its derivatives by up to 73% in terms of prediction accuracy. We analyze the node embeddings to confirm that closeness in embedding space correlates with stronger relationships as measured by the link weight. We anticipate this new approach will provide effective solutions to more graph mining tasks

Opis:
Microcapsule technology was applied with nitramine explosives to improve their performance. Polymethyl Methacrylate (PMMA) was selected for the fabrication of 1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocane (HMX) based microcapsules. The PMMA/HMX-based microcapsules were prepared via a facile in situ polymerization of PMMA on the surface of the HMX crystals. Structural characterization of the PMMA/HMX microcapsules was studied systematically by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, and their thermal durability as well as their mechanical sensitivities were measured. The results indicated that spherical microcapsules were formed, with PMMA as the capsule wall and HMX as the core material. The SEM results showed that the grains of the PMMA/HMX microcapsules were spherical and that the particle distribution was homogeneous. XRD and FT-IR analyses indicated that the HMX polymorph was preserved in the optimal β-form during the whole preparative process. The DSC results showed that the PMMA/HMX microcapsules had better thermal decomposition performance, and that the apparent activation energy of the microcapsules had increased by 47.3 kJ/mol compared to the recrystallized HMX, and its thermal stability had greatly improved. In addition, the drop height (H50) had increased from 30.45 cm to 58.49 cm, an increase of 65.81%. Thus, microcapsule technology will have a very wide range of applications in reducing the sensitivity of high energy materials in the future.

Opis:
Several aspects of in vitro culture have potential for cereal improvement. This paper focuses on evaluation of somaclonal variation (SV) from immature embryo callus culture, and doubled haploid (DH) production via anther culture in barley. Genetically stable SV was observed for several seedling morphological traits such as albino, yellow, light green and lethal. SV occurred at approximately half the frequency of azide-induced mutagenesis. The potential for widespread application of anther culture-mediated DH production in barley breeding and genetic studies was increased through culture procedure improvements and understanding the inheritance of anther culture response. Methodology improvements included substitution of inexpensive gelrite for expensive ficoll or agarose, ability to grow anther donor plants under field as well as growth chamber conditions and flexibility in cold pretreatment/storage of anther donor spikes for 4-6 weeks prior to anther plating. From diallel analysis, inheritance of anther culture response was complex with additive and dominance effects for embryoid formation, total plant regeneration and green plant regeneration and reciprocal effects (maternal) for green plant regeneration. High x low responder crosses generated F₁’s that were intermediate in response and low x low crosses sometimes produced F₁ heterosis for green plant regeneration. Therefore, some recalcitrant types appear to be usable in anther culture DH production systems within a breeding program.

Opis:
The performance of a hydraulic fracturing fluid (HFF) system directly determines the efficiency of stimulation. Since the targeted formations of most oil fields in China are characterized by large depth (~5000 m), high temperature (160 to 180 °C) and tight lithology, newer and suitable HFFs have to be developed. Based on a newly synthetized organo-boron/-zirconium cross-linking agent (Gh-g), a composite temperature stabilizer (WJ-6) and other optimized additives via indoor evaluation, this study introduced a novel HFF, which is thermally stable at high temperature (HT) up to 180 °C and exerted low friction pressures. The performance of HFF was evaluated in the laboratory. The experimental results showed that the HFF system performed well at HTs. It maintained a viscosity of 100 mPa•s or more after 90 min of shearing (170 s−1) at 180 °C. Furthermore, the system exhibited delayed cross-linking. It took 120 s for the cross-linking reaction to complete; therefore, the tube friction was reduced to a large extent. Another characteristic feature of the formulated HFF system was the low friction pressures, where the drag reduction percentage was in the range from 35% to 70%. Moreover, only minor damage was caused by the fluid to the formation core samples. The average core permeability damage was 19.6%. All these qualities ensure that this fluid system is in full compliance with the requirements of the fracturing treatment.
