Opis:
The left hemiface expresses emotion more intensely than the right. Because emotional expressions contract the facial muscles and wrinkle the skin, theoretically the left hemiface’s greater expressivity should prompt more pronounced expression lines and wrinkles on the left than right side of the face. As wrinkles are the most salient age cue, we investigated whether the left hemiface consequently appears older than the right. Two hundred and sixty participants (F=148; M=112) viewed booklets containing pairs of left-left and right-right chimeric faces of eight models (M=F). For each trial participants were asked to make a two alternative forced choice response indicating which image looked older. Results confirmed a left cheek bias, with participants more likely to select left-left than right-right chimeras. Whilst participant gender did not influence perceptions, model gender predicted cheek selections: responses to female models drive the overall left cheek bias. The left cheek (56.8%) appeared older than the right cheek (43.2%) for female models, whereas there was little difference in perceived age between male models' left (50.8%) and right (49.2%) cheeks. Given that youth influences perceptions of female beauty, these findings complement previous research and offer a potential explanation for why the left side of females’ faces are judged less attractive: the right cheek appears younger.

Opis:
We report the importance of interface engineering in heteroepitaxy with examples of plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxial ZnO growths on (0001) sapphire substrates and on (0001) GaN/sapphire templates, whose interfaces are engineered to improve and to control properties of ZnO films. The growth of rocksalt structure MgO buffer on Al$\text{}_{2}$O$\text{}_{3}$ (0001) is developed for ZnO epitaxy. By employing the MgO buffer layer, the formation of 30$\text{}^{o}$ rotated mixed domains is prohibited and two-dimensional layer-by-layer growth of ZnO on sapphire substrate is achieved. High-resolution X-ray diffraction reveals the superior improvement in a crystal quality of ZnO films with an MgO buffer. Polarity of wurtzite structure ZnO films on Ga-polar GaN/sapphire templates is controlled by changing interface structures. By forming a single crystalline, monoclinic Ga$\text{}_{2}$O$\text{}_{3}$ interfacial layer between GaN and ZnO through O-plasma pre-exposure on the Ga-polar GaN surface, O-polar ZnO films are grown. By forming the ZnO/GaN heterointerface without an interfacial layer through the Zn pre-exposure on the Ga-polar GaN surface, Zn-polar ZnO films are grown.

Opis:
The green body and dense substrate of indium tin oxide was joined by uniaxially pressing at 0.3 MPa at 1300°C to test the restoring of the eroded part of transparent conducting oxide target. The green body was sintered to 98% of theoretical density under the suppression of shrinkage along the boundary below 5%. The boundary between two parts was free of pore but could be recognized from the difference in grain sizes. The joined part had the virtually same density with the substrate, but the grain size was less than one fifth compared with that of substrate.

Opis:
Metallic fuel slugs containing rare-earth (RE) elements have high reactivity with quartz (SiO2) molds, and a reaction layer with a considerable thickness is formed at the surface of metallic fuel slugs. The surface characterization of metallic fuel slugs is essential for safety while operating a fast reactor at elevated temperature. Hence, it is necessary to evaluate the surface characteristics of the fuel slugs so that chemical interaction between fuel slug and cladding can be minimized in the reactor. When the Si element causes a eutectic reaction with the cladding, it deteriorates the metallic fuel slugs. Thus, it is necessary to examine the characteristics of the surface reaction layer to prevent the reaction of the metallic fuel slugs. In this study, we investigated the metallurgical characteristics of the surface reaction layer of fabricated U-10wt.%Zr-Xwt.%RE (X = 0, 5, 10) fuel slugs using injection casting. The results showed that the thickness of the surface reaction layer increased as the RE content of the metallic fuel slugs increased. The surface reaction layer of the metallic fuel slug was mainly formed by RE, Zr and the Si, which diffused in the quartz mold.

Opis:
With the increasing demand for efficient and economic energy storage, tin disulfide (SnS2), as one of the most attractive anode candidates for the next generation high-energy rechargeable Li-ion battery, have been paid more and more attention because of its high theoretical energy density and cost effectiveness. In this study, a new, simple and effective process, mechanical alloying (MA), has been developed for preparing fine anode material tin disulfides, in which ammonium chloride (AC), referred to as process control agents (PCAs), were used to prevent excessive cold-welding and accelerate the synthesis rates to some extent. Meanwhile, in order to decrease the mean size of SnS2 powder particles and improve the contact areas between the active materials, wet milling process was also conducted with normal hexane (NH) as a solvent PCA. The prepared powders were both characterized by X-ray diffraction, Field emission-scanning electron microscopeand particle size analyzer. Finally, electrochemical measurements for Li/SnS2 cells were takenat room temperature, using a two-electrode cell assembled in an argon-filled glove box and the electrolyte of 1M LiPF6 in a mixture of ethylene carbonate(EC)/dimethylcarbonate (DMC)/ethylene methyl carbonate (EMC) (volume ratio of 1:1:1).
