Opis:
The polymerization process of epoxy resins (bisphenol-A dicyanate) was studied using positron-annihilation lifetime spectroscopy. The polymerization from monomer to polymer through a polymerization reaction was followed by positron-annihilation lifetime spectroscopy measurements. Resins kept at curing temperatures (120, 150, and 200°C) changed form from a powder to a solid through a liquid. The size of the intermolecular spaces of the solid samples increased along with the progress of polymerization.

Opis:
We propose a practical simple local navigation system inspired by the sequence learning mechanism of the entorhino-hippocampal system. The proposed system memorizes a route as sequences of landmarks in the same way humans do. The proposed local navigation system includes a local route memory unit, landmark extraction unit, and learning-type matching unit. In the local route memory unit, the concept of the sequence learning mechanism of the entorhino-hippocampal system is implemented using a fully connected network, while a sequence of landmarks is embedded in the connection matrix as the local route memory. This system has two operation modes: learning and recall modes. In learning mode, a sequence of landmarks, i.e. a local route, is represented by enhanced loop connections in the connection matrix. In recall mode, the system traces the stored route comparing current landmarks with the stored landmarks using the landmark extraction and learning-type matching units. The system uses a prospective sequence to match the current landmark sequence with the recalled one. Using a prospective sequence in the route comparison allows confirmation of the correct route and deals with any slight change in the current sequence of landmarks. A certainty index is also introduced for judging the validity of the route selection. We describe a basic update mechanism for the stored landmark sequence in the case of a small change in the local route memory. The validity of the proposed system is confirmed using an autonomous mobile robot with the proposed navigation system.

Opis:
Use of the ship maneuvering simulator (SMS) is at the core of pilot trainees education and training, so it is desirable to have an evaluation method that can be completed shortly after each berthing training session. There are basically two methods of docking maneuvering that pilot trainees learn: one in which the ship enters from outside the port and is berthed directly at the target quay, and a second method in which the vessel carries out a turn in front of the target quay before berthing. The authors suggested an evaluation index in a previous study concerning the first docking method. In the present study, the authors propose an evaluation method for the case of berthing the vessel using the turning maneuver. Since the index obtained by this method offers a single numerical benchmark, it is an easy–to‐understand result of the training exercise. The authors carried out experiments using a SMS and confirmed that the proposed evaluation method is effective and helpful to improve the effectiveness of SMS training.

Opis:
Ankylosaurs have spike−, plate−, and club−shaped osteoderms probably used as defensive and/or offensive weapons. Previous studies have proposed the evolution and function of small ankylosaur osteoderms, but histological variations in their defensive weapons are little known. Here, we provide comparisons of the internal structures in defensive weapons of ankylosaurs, which shed light on understanding their evolutionary history and function. Histological features of spikes, plates, and clubs are similar to those of small osteoderms in having thin compact bone, thick cancellous bone with large vascular canals, and abundant collagen fibers. A previous study demonstrated that each of the three groups of ankylosaurs (the Polacanthidae, Nodosauridae, and Ankylosauridae) have distinct arrangements of collagen fibers in small osteoderms. This study shows that spikes and clubs of ankylosaurs maintain the same characteristic features for each group despite the differences in shapes and sizes. These histological similarities suggest that various types of osteoderms in ankylosaurs retained the thin compact bone and abundant fiber structures of the small osteoderms during their evolution. Polacanthid spikes show thin compact bone, with less collagen fibers than in spikes of nodosaurids and spikes and clubs of ankylosaurids. Also, ankylosaurid plates with hollow bases are very thin in morphology and show thin compact bone. These results imply that the bone strengths of polacanthid spikes and ankylosaurid plates are lower than spikes and clubs of other ankylosaurs, indicating that they may be used more probably as display and/or thermoregulation rather than as weapons. It is thus probable that ankylosaur armor in general played more than just a defensive role.

Opis:
We have carried out a powder X-ray diffraction investigation on antiferromagnetic Kondo semiconductors CeRu₂Al₁₀ and CeOs₂Al₁₀ at low temperatures and under high pressures as well as the structural investigation on single crystal of these compounds. The results of powder X-ray studies of CeRu₂Al₁₀ and CeOs₂Al₁₀ indicate that these compounds do not have structural transition at its antiferromagnetic ordering temperature. The results of single crystal structural refinement indicate that the b-axis of this crystal structure is insensitive not only to pressure but also to temperature and that the effect of cooling to Ce-Ce distance for CeRu₂Al₁₀ is the same as that for CeOs₂Al₁₀.
