Opis:
This study examined the travel behawior of commercial public transport passengers in Lagos State, Nigeria. The descriptive research survey was used in order to assess the opinions of the respondents using the questionnaire. A total of 84 samples were used as representative population, while two null hypotheses were formulated and tested using the Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient at 0.05 level of significant. The results that were obtained indicated that a positive correlation exists between frequency of travel and commuters income in Lagos Metropolis and also that a positive correlation exists between frequency of travel and distance covered by commuters in Lagos Metropolis. Secondary data was also sourced to serve as complement to the primary data, thus allowing for a robust research. Descriptive statistical tools such as percentages were also adopted to present the socio-economic characteristics in the area. Findings showed that about 57% of sampled population are male, 62 % are civil servants, 48% of respondents travel for business purposes. Also, that majority of the respondents (50%) said that the commercial public transport is highly prone to accident, while about 64% of the respondents commute on daily basis. It was established that lack of transport infrastructure coupled with poor road maintenance were seen as the leading causes of inaccessibility of the area.

Opis:
One of the challenges faced by surveyors in acquisition of accurate spatial data for mining applications is the risk involved in acquiring data in rugged terrains and difficult or inaccessible areas. With the advent of modern technology, accurate geospatial data can now be safely obtained for proper mining documentation periodically. The use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) for data acquisition in mine surveying has been a viable means of obtaining reliable geospatial data rapidly and efficiently. The main goal of this study is to develop a semi-automatic UAV-based system for the acquisition of spatial data required for the estimation of the volume of earthworks. A DJI Phantom 4 quadcopter was used for the acquisition of image data of the project site, while the images were processed into a Digital Elevation Model (DEM) using Pix4Dmapper v2.0.1, which was then imported into the MATLAB-based system developed for the automatic estimation of the volume of earthworks. The volume obtained from the automated system was thus compared with the volume obtained directly from the Pix4Dmapper software, having specified a contour interval of 1 and an allowable error rate of ±3% as the standard error. While ±1.02% error was observed in the volume estimated using the Pix4Dmapper, the developed automated system yielded an estimated precision of ±0.81% in its volume estimation, which proves to be more robust for automatic volume estimation in terms of accuracy and precision.

Opis:
Several antidiabetic medicinal plants has shown to exhibit one of more mechanisms to low blood glucose. Balanites aegyptiaca fruit extract has shown to low blood glucose via some of the mechanisms but whether the fruit extract could stimulate glycolysis, glycogenesis, and inhibit gluconeogenesis and glycogenolysis are not fully clear. Hence, the need to evaluate the plant extract on the activities of enzymes in glycolysis, gluconeogenesis, glycogenolysis and glycogenesis in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Ethanol extract of defatted Balanites aegyptiaca fruit-mesocarp was petition with water and ethyl acetate (1:1 v/v) then separated. Aqueous and ethyl acetate fractions obtained were separately administered to streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats daily for 28 days period. Results of the study showed that treating diabetic rats with either aqueous or ethyl acetate fractions of ethanol extract of Balanites aegyptiaca fruit-mesocarp exert significant regulatory effect on the activities of some key hepatic enzymes of glucose metabolism. The aqueous fraction (AFF) in particular enhances glucokinase activity (from 2.22±0.02 to 3.58±0.05 U/min/mg protein) and G6PDH activity (from 1.45±0.02 to 2.10±0.02 U/min/mg protein) but suppressed glucose-6-phosphatase (from 1.44±0.05 to 0.17±0.00 U/min/µmole Pi liberated) among others. In conclusion, ethanol-aqueous fraction of Balanites aegyptiaca fruit-mesocarp exert glucose enzymes regulatory effect by enhancing glucokinase and G6PDH activity but suppressed gluconeogenic enzymes possibly to low blood glucose in diabetic rats. Further research is needed to explore the plant extract (ethanol-aqueous fraction) in order to ascertain the bioactive hidden compounds.

Powder of $BaCe_{0.54}Zr_{0.36}Y_{0.1}O_{2.95}$ (BCZY) ceramics compound was synthesized by a modified sol-gel method using triethylenetetraamine, TETA as a chelating agent. The samples were dried and calcined at 325°C and 1100°C, respectively. The resulting powder properties were characterized using Particle Size Analyzer (PSA), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), X-Ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy (XRF) and Energy Dispersive X-Ray (EDX). At calcination temperature of 1100°C, the sample shows particles with high purity, spherical shape and a single particle size distribution in the range of 342-396 nm. XRF and EDX analysis revealed that the elemental composition of Ba, Ce, Zr and Y present in the sample is almost the same as the nominal stoichiometric composition of BCZY compound. Thus, TETA is one of the potential chelating agents that can be used to synthesize high purity and homogeneous spherically grained cerate-zirconate powders.

Opis:
The random early detection (RED) algorithm was developed in 1993. Nearly three decades later, several improved variants have been proposed by scientists. The use of a (pure) linear function for computing packet drop probability has turned out to be a disadvantage, leading to the problem of large delays. Such a problem may be addressed by using linear and non-linear (i.e. as exponential) packet drop probability functions. This paper proposes a revised RED active queue management algorithm named RED-linear exponential (RED-LE). This variant involves an interplay of linear and exponential drop functions, in order to improve the performance of the original RED algorithm. More importantly, at low and moderate network traffic loads, the RED-LE algorithm employs the linear drop action. However, for high traffic loads, RED-LE employs the exponential function for computing the packet drop probability rate. Experimental results have shown that RED-LE effectively controls congestion and offers an improved network performance under different traffic loads.

Opis:
Electrocoagulation (EC) can be defined a method utilized to remove pollutants from wastewater by applying an electric current to sacrificial electrodes. Many experimental variables like NaCl content (0–4 g/l), current density (5–25 mA/cm2), time (30–90 mins), and pH (4–10) that influence the removal efficiency regarding COD were considered. In the presented research, three distinct configurations related to electrodes, i.e. Al-Al, Fe-Al, and Fe-Fe, have been utilized to determine which was the most effective. RSM depending on BBD was utilized for optimizing various operational parameters with regard to HWW by use of EC. Maximum COD removal (97.9%) was reached at Fe-Al electrodes, NaCl (3.2 g/l), current density (24.7 mA/cm2), time (81.7 mins), and pH (7.4). COD removal (91.3%) was achieved at the Al-Al electrodes, NaCl (3.8 g/l), current density(23.5 mA/cm2), time-86.3 min, and Ph (7.7). At the Fe-Fe electrodes, the removal of COD (89.5%) was obtained at NaCl (2.3 g/l), current density (24.6 mA/cm2), pH 8.5, and time (86.9 min). This indicates that EC could remove pollutants from different types of wastewaters under many operating parameters and with arrangements of electrodes.

Opis:
This article is the first part of a study concerning the spatial development of Khartoum and addresses the issue of the city’s origins and history. Khartoum is the capital of Sudan and the main political, commercial and cultural centre of the country. The city, founded in the 19th century, at the confluence of the White and the Blue Nile, is an example of a fascinating urban structure consisting of three independently functioning centres: Khartoum, Umm-Durman and Khartoum North.
